Sticky ponies? Help!

Well, I've tried searching but I've not come up with a lot, unfortunately.

My pony collection is stored in my closet on shelves. It's dark and cool in there. Not usually humid, either. I live in Southern California, so our humidity isn't as bad as other parts of the country. I mean, sometimes it's humid here, but just not on a regular basis.

Anyway, I took my collection out tonight for some reorganization. And I was really saddened by what I found. About half of my G3 ponies are mildly sticky. Some are REALLY sticky and gross feeling. I set aside the really bad ones in the room, and after sitting out for awhile, they felt a little better, but still gross. So I did the only thing I could think of, washed them in a mild dish soap solution and dried them with a towel, they felt so awful, I had to do something. Now they're out on the table, and they feel a lot better.

My guess is the plasticizers are breaking down in them. There is no mold in or on them, anywhere. They felt ok last time I was organizing, which was six months ago. And they've been stored in these conditions for six or seven years now. I can't really imagine what could be causing this. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to prevent this from happening? The ones I cleaned, will they start feeling sticky again sometime soon? My guess is probably.

And my G1 ponies were not affected at all. Neither were any other toys on the shelves. Just the G3s. I find this very disheartening, so much time and money spent. And the worst part is, the G3s aren't even that old yet. :(

For now, I've spaced them out further apart on the shelves, in hopes that maybe if they got a bit more airflow, it would at least slow down the process.. but otherwise, I'm at a loss.. thanks in advance to anyone that has any thoughts.

Unfortunately, yes, that's the plasticizer breaking down. All you can do is wash them occasionally, as you did. You can try putting those silica packets in with them to remove any extra moisture, but the flaw is in the ponies themselves, not the environment. :(

I've been watching this to see what the answer was...that's a shame. Was it on ones from specific years? I haven't noticed this on any of mine, but I keep my small collection out on shelves.

I have 1 G3 pony I had to wash because it felt greasy. it was one of the clear-purple glitter ponies. it's the only one out of the whole bunch I felt it on.

Hello, we had a few that happened on.....BUT ours aren't "collectable" or "mint"......
so I was up for anything to get rid of "that icky feeling"......I used "Orange GOOP Cleaner"...
have no idea if that is recommended...BUT it worked wonders and really cleans off scuffs and such also!
My daughter was THRILLED to keep ALL her ponies. =)

The majority of the sticky ponies seem to be the ponies from the first year. And it seems to be the ponies with the pearlier bodies that are worse. Some of the more matte looking ponies feel a bit yucky, but not nearly as bad. My first release Pinkie Pie and Kimono were the worst that were affected, aside from one of those Divine Shine ponies from '06. I think she was probably the nastiest -- the clear glitter ponies that buddafly just mentioned having trouble with, too. I only have one of those, though.

Skeen -- thanks, at least now I know I'm not doing anything wrong by storing them in the closet. I felt like it was somehow my fault. It's really a shame. I mean, they are just plastic ponies and it's not the end of the world or the biggest of my worries in life lately, but it's disappointing.

I guess this weekend I'll be washing the rest of the ones that feel like they need it. And hope that it keeps them feeling decent for at least a good amount of time.

I do find it sad that in only a short amount of time these ones are breaking down while most of my ponies from my childhood are still in pristine condition. And they were played with! These never were!

I'm sorry to hear that though :/ I've actually opened toys from the store and had them feel this way, I wonder if it's the same thing? It feels like someone rubbed oil all over it. If it is the plastic breaking down does that mean they will develop cancer? Well at least it isn't your childhood ponies though!

I'm not sure. I think it means mainly that they'll be less bendy? If that makes sense, and I could be totally off-base here!

Will the Orange Goop Remover or any of the other cleaners take the identifying marks off the ponies if you try and clean them with this stuff?
