Okay.... I bought the Show Stable for cheap on ebay and am very happy with having a project.... BUT....now that I got the BULK of the flat, black (indoor, matte) paint off of the roof, it is in the grooves. I've tried taking tiny pointed scissors with and without a cotton ball saturated in pure acetone. With is making the paint gooey and smudgy and without is going to damage the roof.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have used goof off once already to remove the first round of smudged black paint. As far as I can see in regards to toys, this is a unique problem.... leave it to me to inherit it lol.....

Aside from the roof issue, I'm loving having the Show Stable back in my collection. :bliss:

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might have.

Tea tree oil! It works like a charm to remove almost any paint job and doesn't damage! I've used it to remove many factory paint from heads, ponies, etc, and it will most (99.9%) certainly remove your black spray paint residue.
However, having the paint deeply embedded in the grooves will present a problem like you said----maybe first go into the grooves with q-tips soaked in the tea tree oil, and then after you get off all you can that way, use your scissors' points wrapped in fabric to get deeper in.

You'll need quite a few q-tips to clean it all off (first it will smudge a bit, but then, using new clean q-tips, it will just come right off with the tea tree oil) and then wash in regular soap (detergent) and water.

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

Oh awesome! Where can I buy it? A regular store? Thank you so much!!!!

Oh, I'm sorry! :hits self on head: I didn't realize I'd forgotten to say where to find it!! ^^;;

It's available in the vitamin aisle in your local pharmacy (Walgreens, CVS, even Wal-Mart). It's least costly at Wal-Mart.

^^

Thank you so much for the help!!!!

I have a technique I've used to clean paint out of deep grooves that might help. Take a paper towel soaked with whatever cleaning solution you're using--100% pure acetone, tea tree oil ect--, drape it over the object, then take a tooth pick and run it over the grooves you're trying to get the paint out of. Press firmly. The paint should come up onto the paper towel.

Thank you, Star_Flare! I'll definitely try that too.... I'm having luck, but it's slow-going... the oil stinks LOL... I may work with it outside tomorrow!!

I tried goo gone and it seemed to start melting the plastic (it was one of the first things I tried), so I stopped. Thank you for the suggestion, though! :)

The toothbrush is a good option, cannibalcow... may save my fingers from going numb with the q tips! Thanks to you both!!

tea tree oil is great for your sinuses... although it really does stink, huh!

my mother used to diluted it in hot water in a bucket, and then put my head over it with a towel over, like a fume tent whenever I was sick. It works, but my god it's awful! she also dabbed it on my head before bed when I was sick - that's a nicer option. It's also good for fleas (and I've heard ringworm, too), we use it to bath our dogs if the shops are shut and we discover the little nasties on them and we're out of our usual stuff - they smell so fresh after!

So when you're done, leave it in the cupboard, you never know when you'll need it!

As funny as it sounds, I sort of like the black "outline" look of the shingles now.

Good luck on your project.

@ Stormness_1: Thanks for the tips! And it doesn't hurt animals? I had a massively irritating winter battling fleas in my room (cats and a dog).... would it be okay for cats too, like a spot-on? I'll also keep it mind for when someone is sick. It's not a bad smell after you've been around it for a few.... hours! :)

Thanks, TeensyBoo.... I'm about 3/4 of the way done with the roof... I have decided to repaint the roof by hand (glossy pink) once I get as much of the black out as possible, and then I might take pastels and/or glitter paints and do something with the roof tiles. I'm unable to get all of the black out, but most of it is coming out with the oil. So rather than have it look like a failed attempt at restoring something so precious, I'll just take it to the next level and customize it instead! :) I wish I could like it like you do.... I'm just not into dark colors like I used to be. There was a time where the black roof wouldn't have fazed me at all and I would have probably painted planets or stars or something like that on it, but right now I'm into vivid colors lol

(It's just taking me time because of the heat and the rain we have here in South Florida.... I had an awesome weather day earlier in the week)

I don't know about pets, but it is marketed as a cleanser for human skin!
The actual story of how we discovered it was a good paint remover is when my sister had applied some tea tree oil to her face to cleanse it. (Recommended for deep pore cleansing and all that---that's why it's in the pharmacy/vitamin aisles.)

Back then, she used to wear glasses and she was, and still is, super crazy about always having their lenses perfectly clear. (Unlike me, who can wear glasses with specks, dust and even mashed potatoes on the lenses before I notice it! :laughs: She's always telling me 'How can you WEAR them like that?!?')

Anyway, she must've inadvertently touched the enamel paint on the frames with her face because when she took them off to clean them---the frame/handles paint all came off!

It was crazy---I guess the tea tree oil had been sitting/getting into the frames for awhile and when she touched it, it just came right off on her hand!

So then, we had a thought......it had always been TERRIBLY hard to remove doll faces (factory painted faces especially) with just rubbing alcohol or acetone and so, we said, 'Hey! Let's try this....'

And on every doll face we tried it on, it came off in 5 minutes or less, with just a few q-tips and quick rubbing! (The alcohol/acetone method took HOURS in several treatments, and much elbow grease and STILL never all removed the face!) The Tea tree was an amazing discovery!

Since then, (about 7 years now), we've used it on hundreds of doll heads, pony cutie marks, doll tattoos, etc and it never fails!!!! On vinyl, resin, pvc, hard plastic---anything!

So, that accidental mishap with the eyeglass paint coming off really saved us so much time, effort and sweat over the years!!!!!!

PS Mommy4Life-san, I was thinking--and I'm sure you've done it---but have you let some tea tree oil just sit on the cracks, for awhile (15 minutes or the longer/more the better), before scrubbing/rubbing? I know sometimes, with really tough paint jobs, it helps to let the oil just ruminate for a while on the offending areas and then rub/wipe. ^^

That's pretty neat how you discovered that, SetsunaKou! Not good for the glasses, but for everything else! And Yes, I've discovered that about leaving it on for a little bit... comes off much easier. I wish I had known that from the start, because the back looks so much more clean than the part that lifts up (I used three different things on that part, in essence, kind of wrecking it... live and learn). I'm just about done removing the paint now, so I'll be posting more pics in another day or so of what it looks like post-paint removal.

Thank you also, KingNorth! Never thought of that, either. At least I and anyone who comes after me with this issue or something similar will have a little artistic arsenal of how to remove stubborn, ugly spray paint!!! :)

Its really great..
I was wondering to know the place from where I can have this.

The tea tree oil? It's at most pharmacies or chemists, and also at many grocery stores now, too! Even Wal-mart carries it. (And Wal-Mart is the least costly, so that's where I buy mine.)

It's also on eBay and Amazon, for those who prefer to purchase online. ^^

The other nice thing about tea tree oil, is that being subjected to the fumes is actually a GOOD thing for you, unlike most other cleaners which are bad for your health to smell!!
It's a health oil/cleanser, so while you clean your dolls/ponies, you can also clear your sinuses and/or clean your pores! :laughs: After a while, using it so often, it doesn't smell bad---just kind of medicinal scented. ^^ Super clean scented, at the very least! ^^

I got to like the scent. Unfortunately, my grandmother can't stand it, so I had to do the rest of the roof outside. I'm going to post pics of the show stable all set for repainting / customization. I finished that part today!

And I found the oil at both Target and Walmart for 8 dollars for 2 ounces. It is in a little bottle, usually on the very bottom shelf. I also found it at my local grocery store for 8 bucks for one ounce, which I bought for this project twice before realizing that I'd get twice as much elsewhere. I ended up buying 6 ounces for this project overall, and used probably 4.5 of it.

Thank you again to everyone for their suggestions! You're all awesome!

lol sorry, never actually got back here until now... you can use it on pets as long as it's really diluted, like max a capful to say a litre.... not sure what that is in imperial?? maybe a gallon? pfft I don't know lol! Did I mention ringworms? my bestie and I used to bath her rescued guineapigs (hamsters) in it, because if they didn't already have them, they were bound to be carriers of the bacteria, grotty little critters they are when they're not looked after, and that took care of it! We put two capfuls in the wash when we do our dog blankets, and they're not only flea free but smell fresh and sanitised, too. You could probably make up a solution to put in a dropper or a spray bottle for your pets, but if they show any signs of irritation, dilute further before using it again, some skin is more sensitive to the oil.

That price seems to be pretty expensive, but that's probably because it's less of a household thing over there - here its like a staple in every home!! Mind you, there was some oil that everyone with horses has over there and someone online was telling me about it and how it's so easy and cheap, blah, blah, blah... do you think I could find it at any supermarket here? Ended up having to get it from a health food store (in a ridiculously small, expensive bottle) because it has some arthritis easing qualities or something, and I wanted it for something else entirely!!!
