Hi Everybody,

I am casting a show for TLC about people with unique collections or obsessions. I found this forum and wanted to get in touch with anybody who has the most amazing My Little Pony collection to see if they'd be interested in sharing their story on our show. Please shoot me an email if this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of. Hope to hear from some of you!

Thanks,
Sarah Trachtenberg

I agree with Must Be Jewel.

This person hasn't even told us the name of the show she is recruiting for. It is most likely "My Crazy Obsession".

It is not a show about respecting people and their hobbies. It is a show about "oh look at the freak over here that collects (insert hobby subject here)".

I wrote to this person to ask for some details... mainly about the light the collector will be portrayed in. I also talked a little about the reasons many of us collect, and how (while some folk collect due to mental illness or addictive personality traits) that many of us do so because of the warm memories we have of our childhood collections. I'm not interested in appearing on the show, and am in Canada (so don't think they'd be interested in me anyway) which is why I figure I might be a good one to ask the questions. I'll definitely report back with whatever I hear. :) But I suspect the collectors aren't shown in a positive light.

I had a feeling this show wasn't good, but I wasn't sure if I was supposed to say anything.

So did this person make an Introduction?
I was looking but did not see one...

I'm sure they won't, as they're not joining the community. They're recruiting for a show. I'm sure they didn't read anything about the rules.

DO NOT WANT!!!

This sounds like a bad situation - and if this woman snares anyone into her trap, it's going to make all MLP collectors look bad. More importantly, the one person they choose could be taken advantage of. I've read about people who suffer deep emotional trauma from the way they're portrayed on shows like this.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

I hope no one does this. It's just going to make all MLP collectors look bad.

"Hi,

Yes, I am casting for My Crazy Obsession. The name, sadly, turns a lot of people off but this season we are more focusing on big collectors rather than the people like we had last season who live various misunderstood alternative lifestyles. I understand your concern and appreciate your input. I found through research that there are a great deal of My Little Pony enthusiasts hence my posting in the forum. I have no intention to persist, rather make one post to let anybody who might be interested have the opportunity to contact me and tell their story.

Thanks,
Sarah"

This was what she told me when I expressed my concerns to her.

She has no intention of doing anything more than solicit. She just knows that my little pony is a popular thing to collect and be involved in right now and is trying to capitalize on it. So she wouldn't have thought to make an introduction post or to even go back and read what people are saying in response to the post. She's just going to throw it out there and see who is dumb enough to volunteer.

She should attend the Fair, that would be a better place to interview and talk to people so they can get an honest feel for what the show wants to achieve and show. As with every level of collecting anything, there are all different levels of Collecting and involvement. If you have any more contact with her Nichi steer her towards the upcoming Fair

If you put in that casting person's address. They've been searching on other MLP boards.

TLC Show

Friendship is Magic

I remember a similar thing happened to me on another message board (retro themed). ABC casting went there for some retro obsessed person for wife swap.

Agree with previous statements to avoid! You have to realize that TV is a business and they want to make money. A cutesy show about a MLP collection is not going to interest the general population. There really is no drama! So, the producers add the drama through editing, putting words in the person's mouth, and generally making them look like a crazy person.

Also, it is coming into the light that a lot of these "reality shows" are completely fake. HGTV's House Hunters was the latest one to come under fire for being almost 100% fictional. The participants are sometimes even scripted/told what to say- therefore, it isn't a show about them at all! I realize that is a different network but the TV biz is the TV biz, right?

Recently, a board member had a story done about her in a local paper and it was posted online. Maybe someone remembers who? Anyway, the headline was something like, "Girl has spent $$ lots o money $$ on MLP collection." Basically, what they did from the very beginning was make her look ridiculous by spending a small fortune on plastic ponies. Now, she even told the paper that their figure was inflated and she was upset that they had sort of created that "fact."

15 minutes of fame isn't worth it if it's all skewed to make you look bad!

I just wouldn't be interested in something like this. It's one thing to share the love of MLP with other ponypeople or family and close friends but I don't think I'd ever want to be on a national tv program. People who don't know or care about me, gawking at me and my ponies. It just seems weird to me :/

It's not fair of anyone to solicit things like this to innocent people. Obviously these people are not going to emphasize the happiness and nostalgia MLPs bring to so many people; we'd be portrayed as oddities and museum exhibits to be pitied for our "unnatural obsession" and to be gawked at. I don't watch this kind of TV for this reason. There are always two sides to a story, and I'm afraid the viewers will only see the negatives behind collecting. But hey, money is money, no matter how TV stations make theirs. I sincerely hope no one falls into this trap.

I doubt they'll go for that. They want to focus on one to two "obsessed" people not the honest feel of what the community is really like. They might do a snippet on us, but then they'll say, "Well, THIS person is BURIED in Ponies! They got foreclosed on because they couldn't pay their mortgage, but they sure could buy Ponies!" That kind of stuff. And personally? I REALLY don't want them hovering around us throughout the Fair. It's one thing to be taping us for Hasbro's own use, it's quite another to tape for a show, and having it air on national (and perhaps international with licensing rights!) tv. I have NOT told the world I collect Ponies, and I certainly wouldn't want to that way.

To say I have a bias against the media and "sensationalism" to reveal people's flaws is an understatement. I hate most reality tv (with few exceptions, Dog the Bounty Hunter being one guilty pleasure), and I think it's brought our culture to a new low (Snooky, anyone? Eww!)

God I hope no one does this, I wish these reality shows would leave vintage toy collecting alone. All it does it create people who do it for profit and not for the sheer enjoyment of it. Of all the years I've been on this forum as a collector of many different 80's toys I have never thought reality TV would be knocking down the doors.

I agree they'll make pony collectors look like freaks with a mental problem. Get lost TLC we don't want you here.
