What Exactly Happened to Derpy Hooves?

I've been wondering this a lot lately.
I know that there was a whole debate about it with Hasbro following the episode "The Last Round-Up", and some people were offended by Derpy and they assumed that she was supposedly a way to poke fun at mentally handicapped people.
I'm not really sure what happened to her after that.
I heard a rumor about Hasbro officially canning Derpy and were forbidden to show her in the series again whatsoever, but I'm not sure if that''s true.
They also don't show her name anymore on trading cards or other merchandise, which I find odd, because they could easily call her Ditzy Doo, her originally prospected name.

Will we ever see her again?
It would be a shame if she wasn't allowed to be featured anymore. :sadpony:

All the newer Hot Topic merch refers to her as Muffins...

I heard about them not showing her anymore, but I also heard that she'll be back next season. So IDK?

Do you watch the show? She's been on there several times, hanging out in the background as ususal. :] I've seen her referred to a lot as 'Best Pony' on the official merchandise - with is not an incorrect title! (I think Rarity is best pony, but I'm sure GreyPeg is a lot of folks' favorite!)

Yeah, Hasbro did apparently offend people with The Last Roundup. I personally didn't find it offensive, I thought it was an amusing little scenario with someone like Rainbow Dash being forced to work with a klutz, but people saw it as poking fun at mentally handicapped people. They had to stop calling her Derpy and change the voice acting to make her sound more normal (for lack of a better word). If you haven't seen the voice change, you should check it out on YouTube. Personally, I think they could have turned her into a real asset by making her the star of an episode about respect for the mentally handicapped, but that could be a whole 'nother discussion right there.

To get straight to the point, Derpy herself isn't going anywhere, but her name is, at least officially. I mean, she was the Fair and SDCC pony last year, and she's being released as a regular-sized brushable this summer, just not as "Derpy". She's too popular with the bronies to get rid of her completely, and whatever they call her officially, the bronies will think of her as Derpy anyway. As long as Hasbro leaves her in the background and doesn't call attention to her (or her, um, challenges), I can't see there being a problem. I personally think Derpy is a cute little Where's Waldo game, and I'd like to see her in the show. I also like her design overall.

PS Despite what many people say, Applejack is actually best pony, but Spike is best character. ;)

So here's the story all about how the fandom got flipped turned upside down

Early in the days of the G4 fandom, *****'s /co/ board was watching FiM. Someone noticed a wall-eyed grey pegasus in the background. An anon named this animation error "Derpy Hooves" based on "derp" from BASEketball, a Matt Stone/Trey Parker film. She quickly became an in-joke of the /co/ mlp fans and spread into the mainstream parts of the fandom once bronies left *****.

Show staff noticed the large amount of fan art and fan attention this background pony got and began intentionally putting her into scenes in season 2. Fans were ecstatic. In "The Last Roundup," she's called Derpy and is given lines. The VA, Tabitha St. Germain, didn't know the gender nor "backstory" of the character and gave "him" a voice that reminded her of a gangly, bumbling friend she used to have.

Several people already took issue with the name "Derpy" because they felt it made fun of people who had certain mental conditions. Once the episode aired, it exploded. People who have never noticed the pony before took offense to how she was portrayed and how Rainbow Dash treated her. The writer of the episode (can't remember off the top of my head) has a child named Soren (like the Wonderbolt, whose named after the kid) who is profoundly disabled and she felt so bad that someone thoguht she was making fun of disabled people. Hasbro, Tabitha and the writer retconned the episode to make it less offensive.

There was a huge "save Derpy" campaign, as some felt Hasbro was trying to kill her. She wasn't being seen during group shots in season 3, though she was seen multiple times during the finale.

Hasbro has never openly called her Derpy. They first released her as the SDCC/MLP Fair toy, which is never officially named, so they were able to get away with that. On licensed merchandise they let the company label it with whatever, with names such as Bubbles, Muffin Pony or Derpy. The Enterplay cards have no name on them, but the first letter of each sentence of the description spells Derpy.

She's going to be in the TRU pack, but we don't know how she'll be named.

TL;DR She still exists in the show and comics, is getting a toy this summer, but is no longer "officially" named Derpy.

I like the name ditzy doo. They could have made her a clumsy, goofy, "dumb blonde" ditz pony and that wouldn't have been offensive at all. It would have been kinda cute.

After all, who remembers "bubble head" from G1!??

Considering she was in The Hub's most recent promo trailer, Derpy isn't going anywhere. :3 Just don't be expecting a big scene with her again. I personally love Derpy, and am not offended by her.

I will be curious as to if/what she will be named in the TRU pack. :) I love it that HT refers her to as "Best Pony" or "Muffins". It sadly is taboo to refer to her as Derpy, so she is now the no name pony.

while I understand where the people who protest are coming from, I don't see the character as offensive to those with learning disabilities etc.
Just seems like a daft clumsy pony to me.

Everyone sees everything in their own way. Some people saw that JC Penny teapot and thought it looked like Hitler. Others see the name "Derpy" and think they're making fun of people who can only vocalize in sounds that aren't like speech.

Hasbro wants to be as family-friendly as possible, and they know a good amount of the parents they advertise to have disabled kids, so they don't want to offend them. Not EVERYONE saw Derpy as offensive, but SOME people saw it as offensive and Hasbro saw it as large enough of a risk as to remove the problematic name.

I heard that she will be released soon sometime this year and I am looking forward to buying a Derpy Hooves in my collection.

I think that people like to hate things just to make a scene and get attention sometimes. -_-

hasbro just showed her in a new ad they ran on the hub,and i have heard she is in equestria girls"in the background. so she is still around,

I really think if they had stuck to the name Ditzy Doo, she wouldn't have caused such a stir. Derpy has a negative connotation, but Ditzy, while negative, is still a softer description.

Anyway, I don't see her going anywhere. I wish they would give her some more lines. I love her as Ditzy Doo......it's really all about the name for me. lol

I agree with you I like the name Ditzy Doo. It makes her out to be a dumb blonde bubble head and it's not offense at all.

I like the name Ditzy Doo as well. In fact, I'm fine with either name, but I agree that Ditzy is less offensive. It would be great of they'd call her Ditzy and put her back in the show, because her clumsy little antics are cute and would be a great little extra. Like if they did things like her scene with Rainbow Dash a little more often.

I wish she looked like Bubbles (yellow and blue hair) and we could just call her Bubbles :) But that is just wishful thinking on my part!

hasbro just showed her in a new ad they ran on the hub,and i have heard she is in equestria girls"in the background. so she is still around,

I think I saw that, too!
Was it for The Hub's Summer Pool Party?

I like seeing a repetitive background character. It's like an easter egg in video games. But, as someone else said they could have done something different to her character.

for some reason the Derpy Whooves trading card is hte only character card that doesn't have a name on it

I don't like the character at all. I'm not a fan of memebase and ***** or any of their brony shenanigans. It's just a huge eyeroll for me.
