What/how do you collect?

I only collect G1s. I am also one of the greedy ones who has dreams of owning one of every single pony (when I was a kid this was ALWAYS my wish when blowing out birthday candles/ seeing shooting stars etc lol). I like MOC/MIB but I don't have any because they are so expensive and I would rather spend the money on multiple loose ponies instead of just one but someday I would love to have atleast a couple. A few years back I realized I needed to focus on a few at a time to make it easier on my sanity. Right now I am focusing mostly on US/Canadian releases (although the odd UK one pops up that I can't resist). I generally focus on a few sets at a time based on the ones I like best (TAF, Twinkle Eyes, Perfume Puffs etc) but always end up with random ones from ebay lots or thrift stores.

As of right now I am not actively trying to get Nirvanas or foreign ponies because, to be honest, it is simply overwhelming how many are out there and I have almost no experience or knowledge when it comes to them. I would like to finish the US/Canadian collections (which I have a made a pretty good dent in), then UK and eventually into other countries.

I am also trying to get all of the playsets and have recently started focusing more on accessories as well. I am not as big of a fan of the pony wear and have not tried to particularly get any aside from what comes in lots or whatever. I do absolutely LOVE any kind of random merchandise like plushies, books, carry cases, records etc. though and get everything I possibly can.

I am extremely lucky that my husband supports my collecting but unfortunately right now I have nowhere to display my collection and it is all in big plastic tubs so I have been trying to exercise *cough* self control.
 
I only collect G1s and I collect what I like. Some types of G1s I want the whole group of-like the Twinkle Eyes-but thats because I like all the Twinkle Eyes!
 
I have a hefty generation 1 collection, because my mom bought me so many ponies throughout my childhood. She'd buy me some on her own, then I'd beg for them almost every time we went to the store :tongue:

That is probably the most dedicated collecting I've had~ now I'm a casual collector. If I see any generation of pony at a store that I like, I'll snatch it up. Newer generations, usually are subject to bait supply unless I know they're really rare or look really spectacular I may keep it or regift it to someone I know would take care of it or really appreciate it.

For good condition G1's I happen upon in second-hand stores, I'll add them to my old collection and update it as I build~ trade out lesser condition ones for ones I pick up that are in better condition if that is the case.

I don't collect any newer generation ponies typically~

As I'm in this online collecting community for prolonged years, I've discovered that my G1 "grails" are Ribbons and Bow Tie. It's because of the old generation cartoon series~ it was one of the things I held dearest to me during my childhood would watch it every day, didn't care if it were re-runs.

In the cartoon I was most drawn to Ribbons and Bow Tie. Fire Fly and Glory were next up on my favs~

With Ribbons and Bow Tie though, I think I need to start off with making custom ponies of them, for myself as a gift. Then maybe some day I'll muster up the means to actively hunt the original pony toys down for myself o3o but never really entertained the notion seriously. It has crossed my mind and I was very happy over the notion. :flutter2:
 
Also, since I love astronomy-I go for the ones with that theme-Milky Way, Galaxy, I would love to get a Night Glider but keep getting outbid. I am a gemologist-but ponies don't really seem to have a definite gemstone theme in G1, but I do like Rarity from G4.
 
Only G1 here. I want all of them and have pretty much every American and German pony and most of the UK and Italian ones. There are very few exceptions. I would love to have more Dutch ones and some all over the world variants.
I also would love to have the alternate Birthflower ponies.
Unfortunately the ponies I'm looking for almost never come up for sale or are crazy expensive and I'm not crazy enough to spend a fortune on ponies.
 
I collect G1 and MOC G2 only. I want them all, and I have a dream of having MOCs of all my childhood ponies (but I had Mimic so that's not gonna happen, lol!). I tend to cherry pick who I buy anymore based on who I want the most (set-completers get priority) or who I am most in need of upgrades for, and then for the G2's just whatever I can get cheap. I'm in no hurry on them. I also collect merch and nirvanas, and with the nirvanas it's definitely a price/want thing. Like, there are lots of affordable Italians but I'm not as interested in them as I am in the less-common Brazilians, so I'd go for the Brazilians first. I think I need fewer than 10 of them to have the whole collection, then I can move on to getting the Brazilian playsets.
