What's YOUR pony story?

I got into MLP in like 1985? It was my cousin's 1st birthday party and I'm the same age as her, but 2 months older. Anyway her 2 older sisters who were 3 and 5 at the time let me play with their ponies. I liked them so much I didn't want to give it back. After the party my parents took me to the toy store. They said I "picked out" Firefly.

They let me play with her at a young age. I liked chewing her foot. The one that looks like it's on tip toe. She's in need of a good cleaning and a re-glittering, but she is my favorite pony of all the ones I have and whenever I let other people play with my ponies I would always be her and let them play with anybody else. When I was a little older I liked to chew on her purple star brush.

This might get long! Well, when I was little, MLP'S were my favorite toys..
Ever! I had tons of them, and would carry them around
Everwhere. Then, when I was around 10 years old, my
Dad,apparently fed up with our messy basement (where
My toys lived) took it upon himself to throw away ALL
Of my childhood toys...Including Ponies (SS Angel and oakly
Were among them...grrr!!!)Strawberry shortcake dolls,
Barbies, lady lovely locks dolls..and so much more.
(Although,years later,by some miracle,I discovered that
2 of my childhood baby ponies survived!)

The next time I encountered ponies was when the
G2's came out. My mom bought me Berry bright,
And I adored her. I then went through a "too cool
For toys" phase, and ponies were off my radar til I was 18.

My mom came home one day and surprised me with
The first G3 Pinkie pie. I was so happy to see a pony again!
This led me to start talking ponies with my then BFF.
I told her how I missed my childhood ponies, and she
Suggested I check ebay. That had never occurred to me
Before! Next thing I knew,I had bought my fave childhood
Pony (wiggles!) And I was **** bent on re-buying the rest
Of my colllection. I'm STILL not finished! :p

When I was little, I hated my little ponies, I thought they were stupid in lame. I was scared of horses (anything similar to donkeys, haha.) and still am. I recently got into FiM and found out how awesome the toys really are ouo

I received my first My Little Pony in 1982 for Christmas, and from then my collection grew to include well over 200 ponies. The amount of crazy rare ponies I used to own makes me throw up a little. A have a few great MLP memories from when I was a kid; receiving Lucky for Christmas, getting my first Big Brother pony for my birthday, my first Summer Wing pony (High Flyer) and many others.

The memory that remains with me the most to this day is not a pleasant one however. To say that I was into Ponies when I was a kid would have been an enormous understatement, and my friend Jackie* (not her real name) was along for the ride. Her collection rivaled mine not because she loved collecting ponies, but because her parents had a disposable income to spend on them. For my 8th birthday, more than any other pony I have ever wanted, I wanted Lady Flutter. In my opinion, she is the most beautiful pony ever. I grew up in a small town with limited toy stores, and even more limited ponies. So you see, when I did come across 1 Lady Flutter in a toy store several towns away, you can imagine my delight. The bad part? My family was poor, and my mom didn't have money on her that day, so we left the store without the coveted pony. My mom did promise me that she would buy her for me for my birthday, which was 2 weeks away.

I'd like to say that I was a smart kid, but not a bright one unfortunately. You see, since Lady Flutter was so rare, I called Jackie to tell her that I just saw one! I knew she would be excited to hear how beautiful she was, but what I didn't know was that her mom would take her to that toy store that night to buy my beloved pony. You can imagine my reaction when Jackie called me the next morning to tell me all about her new pony. I don't think I had ever experienced crushing disappointment until this moment.

So I didn't get Lady Flutter for my 8th birthday. Or my 9th or 10th either. After the incident with Jackie, the thrill of a new pony seemed bitter-sweet. Eventually, I grew "too cool" for toys and I gave them away to my much younger cousin.

Flash forward to 2 years ago. I was telling a friend this story and she convinced me to begin collecting again. Since I have 4 children, I'm really not able to go hog wild, but I've slowly been increasing my collection again. I'm only interested in Summer/Windy wing ponies and their foreign counterparts.

Eventually, I found Lady Flutter on ebay, and this time, I didn't let her slip through my fingers. By the way, the thrill of a new pony is back and better than ever!!

I had loved ponies as everyone as a child. I had gotten them for birthdays and christmas. Even though I was born in 1986 I still was very muc into My Little Pony. I would watch the show and the movies. I loved to play with my friends and have fashion shows :) I even had a pony sleeping bag! My favorite was Heart Throb and still is :) I even recalling in grade one staring at a Princess Dawn someone had for show and tell, instead of listening to the teacher XD Always would I watch MLP tales on Saturday mornings when the older show was taken off.

I stopped liking MLP when I was in grade 4 and 5. It was in grade 6 when I had a sleep over with some friends and we began talking about Rainbow Brite. We stayed up late and went to my favorite movie store that had many 80's cartoons the next day. I had the internet back in 96/97 so I began looking up all about Rainbow Brite. I then sifted through my items and found Coco Berry so I wondered about her name (since every toy seemed to have one). I was floored when I found Dream Valley.

It began then that I started to collect them again,, going to thrift stores, garage sales and bothering any person a knew. This continues on today where I go by to these when I have a chance. Though I usually turn up empty handed as the children are younger and the toys are newer. So now I use collector sales and flea markets and the internet now to fill in the ones I am missing.

I have about 360 in total just from the places I have mentioned and a few from trips outside where I live. So in 14 years time I have accumulated quite a herd! Now I have to compete with those who buy them in the city for profit and re-sell. I Even found a pony friend (was rival first impeding on my territory LOL) by accident at a doll show whom, coincidentally years later would marry my cousin XD We trade and give each other ponies and go on routine excursions for ponies even now :)

My first pony was Dainty Dove. I got her at a flea market in Mexico, where I still live to this day. I really liked her, even though I didn't believe my mom when she told me that she was a My Little Pony. I grew up with G3s, and Dainty Dove looked nothing like them. I still have her. I got a few G3s over the years, but I was never really interested in them until a little before Core 7 came out. I discovered the Trading Post, Dream Valley, and many more sites. I started exploring the internet and became wise in pony lore. I love all little ponies since my first pony was a G2, the G1s seemed so special and wonderful, I grew up with G3s, and who doesn't love G4?

I collected the original ponies as a kid. My first was Butterscotch. :) I got up to about fifty ponies and then sold all but five when I was in high school.

Then one day in college I was super bored while online and punched "My Little Pony" into the search engine. I became fascinated with ponies all over again. I am still trying to rebuild my original collection. :)

I've always loved ponies and unicorns. I've always eyeballed the my little pony stuff as a kid but always got the usual phrase that every parent has "i can't afford it" it was that way with the care bears too. we always had to pinch pennies, and still do!
but i recently got a job, and a visa card >.> can you say "online shopping"?
once i figured out how to create a paypal and ebay account, i was unstoppable. buying every toy i wanted as a kid (still searching for a few of those extra special ones though)
i've spent over $100 last month on care bears, and now i'm starting to get some of the ponies i never could. i've eyeballed them for years, and now its time to dive in and see what i've been missing.

My first two ponies were Minty and Blue Belle, two of the original 6. I was 6 or 7 at the time, my little sister had just been born, and I had been enthralled with the tv commercials and ads I'd seen in the catalogues.

My friends started collecting ponies and I really really wanted Butterscotch. I thought she was the most beautiful pony I'd ever seen, and her caramel colored mane and tail reminded me if Beauty, this horse I got to ride sometimes when we'd take a trip up to my mom's uncle's farm. I begged and begged for a Butterscotch but with my new little sister around, money was tight, and my mom told me if I wanted any ponies I'd have to save up my allowance.

I got .25 a week for keeping my room clean. It was upped to .50 a week for keeping my room clean and helping out with my little sister. Ponies back then I think were $3.99? Maybe $4.99? So saving up at .50 a week would be and feel like AGES to a 6 year old!

Anyway, I did it- thanks to some generous chipping in froma couple Aunts and Uncles, I had enough money for 2 ponies in about 7 weeks!

It was a great day when mom took me to the post office to change my money into a mail order since I had to order my ponies through a catalogue. (if there are any Canadians on this site, you may remember "Consumers Distributing"? That's where my ponies came from!)

Of course, it took 4 weeks for my catalogue order to be received, processed and mailed back to me.

I had ordered Butterscotch and Blue Belle, however, when my ponies arrived in the mail I was disappointed to have received Blue Belle and MINTY...no Butterscotch! My mom explained that Butterscotch was sold out (out of stock) so the catalogue people just substituted another pony. I was upset at first, but grew to love my Minty and Blue Belle.

Those first two ponies started it off and over the years me and my little sister kept collecting, getting tons of ponies, playsets, quickly getting up over 100.

I never did get my Butterscotch as a kid. I finally got her from eBay, only about 5 months ago. (love eBay). Many a garage sale has claimed a pony or two being sold off, but I've kept about 90. I'm not a fan of the ponies that came after G1, and I don't (and won't) own any of those. I keep my collection small, focusing on getting back the ponies I had as a kid and gave away or sold, or the ponies I wanted and never got as a kid.

I hope someday...Hasbro goes back to the G1 style of ponies.

I had the originals when I was a kid, then about 10 or so years ago my sister was looking up care bears on ebay and I though I should look up ponies...

I love reading these stories about how everyone got into ponies. It sounds like quite a few good childhood memories. I know my story is going to be long and thanks to anyone who actually gets through the whole thing. I too was a childhood pony lover. I don't honestly remember getting any ponies from the store but my mom says she remembers getting me some and I know my childhood best friend had a couple from the store. I was born in '87 so I was kind of on the end of in-store MLP sales. Most of mine were from garage sales, thrift stores and flea markets. I don't remember which one was my very first but my first memory was of being at a flea market in Minnesota while visiting my great-aunt and uncle. Someone was holding me and I was crying because there was something I wanted but I was told no. However, I remember my mom coming up to us with a G1 TE Locket in her hand and giving it to me. I instantly forgot about what I was crying for. I might have been 2 or 3. I wasn't very old. My cousin who was 4 years older than me had a huge collection of MLP and many of the playsets. I loved going to their house to play. I was always so jealous because my cousin's sister (3 years younger than me) and constant playmate inherited all of her sisters ponies so she had like 4 times more than I did. My grandmother would always look for ponies for us and we would have to take turns selecting the ones we wanted.

Anyway I can remember finding some specific ponies in specific places as a kid that became the heart of my childhood collection: Baby Shady-thrift store, Melody-garage sale, Tropical Breeze-flea market, Butterscotch-gramma's playroom (she had been my oldest cousins).

I remember I didn't play them with them a lot when I neared the tween years and panicked when I thought they had been thrown away. I found them in a plastic trash bin with a bunch of my other toys that had been put in storage. I was so happy however I realized that Heart Throb, Firefly and Gusty were missing. I got a few G2s when they came out in 1997 and was very excited they were back even though I don't think I truly believed they were real MLP because they looked so different. By 1998 though I started thinking I was getting too old for them. Then fast forward to 2003 when I found out they were going to be released again I got excited again. I bought many of the very first ones for nostalgic reasons and ended up buying a few G1 eBay lots but stopped collecting again due to saving up to go to Europe my senior year of high school. I bought a few my freshman year of college but didn't get fully into collecting again until my senior year of undergrad and have been back into it completely since then. I think I have more than quadrupled my collection in the past 2 years and still counting now that I have over 400 of them since I collect G1s, G2s, G3s and G4s!

I'm a child of the 80's, and ponies were my thing - never mind barbie etc! I had Bowtie! She was my first, and still one of my favourites. Up until I was about 12, I had accumulated a modest 16 or so ponies. I kept them all. I could never, ever part with them. So, they lived in a tucked away cardboard box over my teens... over university... over my twenties... Pulled out every couple of years or so for nostalgia.

Then one day, only in recent months, I pulled one out for my little girl to play with. Watching her enjoying the pony as much as I had filled me (excuse the cheese) with such joy. Then, as the play got progressively rougher, I suddenly realised I wasn't quite ready to have my girls, dare I say it... ruined, and it got me thinking. I did a random search on a online auction site. Just for s**ts and giggles really. Everything changed! And imagine the shock I got when I found out how much my TAF (and pretty mint, including factory curls) Buttons was going for!

My daughters were compensated with pony substitutes as my old girls were once again cherished and cleaned up, and soon joined by dozens more who I'd both always wanted as a kid and to complete the sets I liked. They even got a brand new box to boot (until I get a big fat house one day with a really nice display cabinet!).

I'm up to about 70 ponies, all early G1 and I'll stick to those years. I have about twenty more on my want list... **** you Hopscotch... I'll get you one day!!

Once the challenge of obtaining them all has been accomplished, I'm sure I'll be tempted into other sets...!

I liked chewing her foot.
And from that moment you knew you were destined to be a farrier.

OK, short version: I'm one of those annoying people who didn't like older gen MLP, then got sucked in by FiM. Shower me in your boos and hisses.

Longer, boring version: I've always liked horses--all animals, really. Had a big collection of Cousteau videos growing up, books on sharks, posters of dolphins, went to zoos and aquariums any chance I got, and of course pony rides and petting zoos at state fairs. Most of these were sort of out-of-reach, almost mystical animals since the only animals I was around regularly were our own cats and dogs.

Naturally though, by the time I first ran across MLP I was a metalhead teen and there was no way I'd be into girly stuff like that. Heck, I never even had GI Joe type dolls when I was a kid, so pink frilly dolls certainly weren't for me. But...somehow that didn't entirely stop me from covertly picking up a few Breyers once I ran across those, as a way of having horses before I could really have horses. Plus I picked up experience with the real thing when I had the chance, taking on odd jobs or just volunteering to help out with them. Point being that I already had a liking for the animals even if the original MLP franchise didn't grab me.

Fast forward to this year. Like many other newcomers I first started seeing the image macros from FiM appearing here and there, and initially shrugged them off as coming from just another source for amusing reaction images. But they persisted. And the people posting them kept expressing their enthusiasm for the show, which didn't really happen with other shows that provided fodder for image macros. So curiosity got the better of me, and since I was looking for a new show to occupy me anyway I gave the pilot a shot. Better to start in the establishing eps than jump in the middle randomly and wind up in the middle of a story arc or something.

The theme started. I cringed a bit at the first part, reminded muchly of the old '80s saccharine--then the theme kicked into its more modern sound and I was like, "Huh, not what I expected." Then the story began...blah blah, simple plot points, simple characters...argh, they just had to put a baby animal in for cutesy factor! Well, OK, so the baby dragon isn't so bad. Animation's not bad either, and the characters aren't all lovey-dovey soft-spoken things. The rainbow one's kinda cool too. ARGH, pink pony, of course they have to have a pi--heh, pink spaz pony funny. OoOOOoh! Who is this glorious laughing dark-colored pony? Wait, she's the villain? But I like her! No, no, ponies are lame, can't like. But...well, I can't stop in the middle of a story without finding out what happens. I'll just watch the next ep to see how it concludes then forget about all this pony nonsense.

Oh jeez, the typical bonding adventure with utterly transparent obstacles. No, not a goofy song, this is terri--heh. Some of the dialog's kind of amusing. And a swishy serpent? OK, I'm amused. Yay! Moon pony again! Not, uh, that I was looking forward to that or anything. NOOOO! They destroyed her! Wait, why am I so concerned with the fate of ponies? And they are all kinda endearing, and...

Confound these ponies.
