I liked chewing her foot.
And from that moment you knew you were destined to be a farrier.
OK, short version: I'm one of those annoying people who didn't like older gen MLP, then got sucked in by FiM. Shower me in your boos and hisses.
Longer, boring version: I've always liked horses--all animals, really. Had a big collection of Cousteau videos growing up, books on sharks, posters of dolphins, went to zoos and aquariums any chance I got, and of course pony rides and petting zoos at state fairs. Most of these were sort of out-of-reach, almost mystical animals since the only animals I was around regularly were our own cats and dogs.
Naturally though, by the time I first ran across MLP I was a metalhead teen and there was no way I'd be into girly stuff like that. Heck, I never even had GI Joe type dolls when I was a kid, so pink frilly dolls certainly weren't for me. But...somehow that didn't entirely stop me from covertly picking up a few Breyers once I ran across those, as a way of having horses before I could really have horses. Plus I picked up experience with the real thing when I had the chance, taking on odd jobs or just volunteering to help out with them. Point being that I already had a liking for the animals even if the original MLP franchise didn't grab me.
Fast forward to this year. Like many other newcomers I first started seeing the image macros from FiM appearing here and there, and initially shrugged them off as coming from just another source for amusing reaction images. But they persisted. And the people posting them kept expressing their enthusiasm for the show, which didn't really happen with other shows that provided fodder for image macros. So curiosity got the better of me, and since I was looking for a new show to occupy me anyway I gave the pilot a shot. Better to start in the establishing eps than jump in the middle randomly and wind up in the middle of a story arc or something.
The theme started. I cringed a bit at the first part, reminded muchly of the old '80s saccharine--then the theme kicked into its more modern sound and I was like, "Huh, not what I expected." Then the story began...blah blah, simple plot points, simple characters...argh, they just had to put a baby animal in for cutesy factor! Well, OK, so the baby dragon isn't so bad. Animation's not bad either, and the characters aren't all lovey-dovey soft-spoken things. The rainbow one's kinda cool too. ARGH, pink pony, of course they have to have a pi--heh, pink spaz pony funny. OoOOOoh! Who is this glorious laughing dark-colored pony? Wait, she's the villain? But I like her! No, no, ponies are lame, can't like. But...well, I can't stop in the middle of a story without finding out what happens. I'll just watch the next ep to see how it concludes then forget about all this pony nonsense.
Oh jeez, the typical bonding adventure with utterly transparent obstacles. No, not a goofy song, this is terri--heh. Some of the dialog's kind of amusing. And a swishy serpent? OK, I'm amused. Yay! Moon pony again! Not, uh, that I was looking forward to that or anything. NOOOO! They destroyed her! Wait, why am I so concerned with the fate of ponies? And they are all kinda endearing, and...
Confound these ponies.
