When you only need the HTF and Rarer Ponies

As a G1 collector, I have reached a point in my collecting where it seems that I only the the HTF or rarer ponies. Or the not so hard to find but hard to find in good condition ponies.

I'm not talking about any international ponies or variants, just the regular old US released ponies.

It makes collecting a bit more challenging. I can spend a lot of time looking at ponies online, and I keep passing up so many because I have them already. The ones that I do need, cost a pretty penny!

Any other collectors reached this place in their collection as well? How have you over came finding the ponies that you still need? Do you just suck it up and dish out the cash for the harder to find ponies?

I'm getting there. Less then 80 to go, many I'm missing are htf nice so I wait around for one in beautiful shape, or just crazy expensive ponies. Mom and Baby, Rapunzel etc. I'm bad, instead of saving my money for a couple of the pricy girls on the list I keep finding and upgrading commons in my collection. I just adore some of the common early girls too much to resist!
 
That's about where I am at. Sometimes I find ponies whilst thrifting( I live in a really big city) but they are usually doubles.. if I get lucky, upgrades. For the most part though, it's all expensive ponies I need from here out. It's kind of depressing. :-(
 
It is a little depressing isn't it? I was thinking the same thing. I too need Mommy & Baby and Rapunzel ect.. luckily I still have a few that I can get for that not high of a price tag. The question is finding them and finding them in at least decant shape. I pretty much have came to rely on the internet to find ponies. I never have luck that thrift stores ect...
 
I have a few common G1's that I need but yea the majority is high priced ones....but thats why I like to collect other things too, so I don't go nuts trying to finish my MLP collection! And sometimes you might get lucky enough that you can trade some of those extra's/upgraded ones for 1 HTF one...I've done it only a few times, but yea, if you have patience, those ones will come....Every once in a while you get lucky in that someone might be getting rid of their ponies, BUT they do collect other toy series!!! It is a little depressing in that, yea Rapunzel is around how many hundreds of dollars? and you really don't want to spend that kinda money on a 'Fair Condition' pony! she should be in Great condition with hopefully the possibility of being able to be cleaned up to Excellent condition!!! (Hey one can dream right?)

Anyways, good luck with that, but hold onto them 'Upgrades' you never know, someone else might run into a 'Double Rapunzel' where they live, or maybe have upgraded their own, but still do not have alot of the less common ones (Cause they spent all their money on high priced ones!!) And there you go, a trade in the making!!!
 
I'm at that stage myself and it is rather frustrating. Got a lot of the common G1's, and a few (VERY few) of the harder to find ones, mail order, Nirvanas, etc. I was super proud of my Dutch Singalong for 20 cents at a garage sale!!! Only prob is... Now I want more Dutch ones!!! I guess for me it's a matter of what do I want more, concentrating on one series/set at a time.
For me it comes down to $$$ a LOT as well. If a seller is willing to accept a payment each week till it's all paid for then I will buy a lot more. I can't afford as much as I would like to as I can't work due to illness, but thank goodness I have a supportive partner who understands Pony addiction, and on occasion, he has been persuaded to contribute to my herd!
I am focusing big time on playset restoration at the moment, but again, it's the same thing. The fiddly little bits (My P.E!!!) don't come up often and when they do they cost the earth. I am after a Lavender Dream Castle, international Waterfall and the BMBB, (Got the Grooming Parlour) as I pretty much have the rest of the G1 sets. Most need a little work though so that's where my efforts lie at the moment.

That and keeping everything clean, dusted, out on display and AWAY from the CAT!!!

Oh I have been at this stage for a while XD I have been (trying) to focus on Twinkle Eyed ponies, and the two associated babies for Quackers and Tic Tac Toe, and all I need now is a baby Tic Tac Toe (who I have lined up atm hehe :smilepony:) But then theres the very very costly Mimic!
But instead of saving up which would be much smarter to do, I go buy other ponies!

Me too! Mimic is on my Grail list along with the Dutchies and the Birthflowers and Ember with a star... BUt main focus right now is the sets... Anyone got a Lavender Dream Castle???!!!
 
I came to the point that I still had a small amount of ponies left until the point that you are talking about... but instead of continuing collecting that way I realized that I will never get that ponyroom that I have longed for... So I will never get a chance to display my beautyful ponies... :sadpony:
So I took another turn in my collecting and made my ponyroom on the internet instead... and I am currently working on it...
My collection has turned into a photo collection... that means that I collect photos of the ponies that I have taken myself... That is of both nice ponies and MIB/MOC....

Ofcourse I still collect too... I have an idea that I will decorate the upper floor later with the playsets and the ponies from the episodes....
I will have dream castle with the second year ponies that was in the episode Rescue at midnight castle and Escape from Catrina....
I will have Paradise Estate with the ponies in the same episodes as the PE....
I will have the Bonnies school of dance with the baby pony dance troup... :winkpony:
and so on....
And of course the kitchen and the school with the 7-tales ponies... :satisfied:
I have all the playsets, but not all the acc.... so that is a challange right now... and I´m trying to get all the ponies that I´m going to keep in as mint shape as possible...

I´m wondering if I will make a flutter Valley too... but if I do I will make it more like the first time we met them in the movie then in the episode end of the flutter valley....

ah, I´m blabbing again... sorry....:tongue:
 
I'm pretty much there aswell. Yeh there are a few more "common" ponies I still need, but the majority are the ones that are HTF. Or HTF in good condition.

I'm also horribly picky which makes it all the more difficult >.< I refuse to spend money on a pony I don't think is in good enough shape for my collection. In my world that is just wasting money.

So at this point, what I do, is just scout the internet. I'm searching every single site I can think of to find the ones I'm still missing. But even if I find one I might not end up buying it because I feel it's either overpriced or not in good enough condition. And so I keep on looking.

But for me half the fun of collecting is the hunt so I really don't mind. Wouldn't it be boring to not have any more ponies to go look for to add to your collection? That's what I keep telling myself and that's how I cope XD

Whenever you do find one you're missing in nice condition and to a reasonable price it feels awesmome and like your patience paied off :)
 
I got stuck collecting sea ponies over and over instead of completing my collection. Which at the mo im having to sell duplicates due to being ill and off work for 4 months so it came in handy because ive not lost a pony from my herd i dont already have, but im in same boat looking at my collection is manly rarer ponies im missing that complete the collection
 
I'm in the same boat! I only need seven ponies to have a complete G1 US collection (and I'm a completist collector so I mean every US pony). Two of them are common but hard to find in great shape. The other five are expensive mail orders. mommy and baby, magenta satin and lace etc. I have a few ponies that need to be upgraded but since I'm picky, the majority didn't join my herd unless I found them acceptable. I'm hoping to find the rest of what I need at the fair this summer (furiously saving my money). After I reach my US collection goal I plan to work on finishing UK G1s, G3 and G4 as well as tracking down the hundreds of G1 accessories I'm still missing. Good luck in finding the rest of what you need to track down!
 
I am so there! Only 4 left in the US collection- MO baby pony, MO Scoops, pink Sprinkles and, crazily enough, castle Majesty!

I should be able to find a decent Majesty at the Fair but I just don't know if I want to dish out major dough for the MOs.

I started getting into the custom scene a few years ago when I couldn't really pony shop anymore. It's a fun way to still be part of the community and there's always new stuff to look at! I also look for accessories although I'm pretty cheap when it comes down to actually buying any of it!

It looks like most of us still need Mommy & Baby, Sweet Scoops, and Rapunzel. Best of luck ponies! I hope all of us find the dream we are looking for.

I've never thought about asking a seller to take payments. I might try that for those very high priced ones.
 
It is super satisfying when you find one that you don't have. I have had a couple of great finds lately, two that I got just because I knew I didn't have them. One was Dutch Singalong and the other turned out to be Mexican Peppermint Crunch!!!

I am no good at all at customizing, (I have ideas but no artistic talent to make it happen, darn it!) but I have a lot of fun cleaning up the ones I do find. There's something about finding a dirty, untidy old pony at a garage sale then watching it come back to life under your hands.

And with regards to asking sellers for payments, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I find people don't mind being asked, and a lot of them do agree because it means steady money for them and a guaranteed sale. For me it means Ponies that I just could not get otherwise. Especially if a particular seller has more than one that I want! (For instance, the Dutch ponies that I am looking for at the moment....)

It never hurts to ask, the worst they can say is no!

Why won't you get a Ponyroom? And... YOu don't have to have a room to display your babies. I have been told I have the biggest G1 collection here in New Zealand, (Don't know if that is true but it sure made me feel good!!!) and I don't have a dedicated pony room. Doesn't mean my herd isn't displayed... I have shelves in the hallway, entryway, and lounge, they are everywhere. Pony Room.... Nah... Pony HOUSE! Hehe.

I even have my Paradise Estate on a coffee table, (only just fits) with my HSH, Megan's Place, three pretty parlours, School and Kitchen tucked underneath. I am actually running out of shelf space though so am trying to find another decent one for the internationals and Mail Orders...

I REALLY like your idea of creating a Flutter Valley though! I only have two Flutter Ponies, but that is because I would love to find some with their original wings... (I know, not likely) and the two I have I found with replica wings. They look pretty good... If I knew how to make em or where to ger em I might start looking at non winged Flutters.

Would you include the Windy Wings and Summer Wings in the valley? Maybe I should be setting up a flutter valley shelf instead of one for the MO's and internationals....

Got me thinking now...

Sea Ponies??? I am missing a few Sea Ponies... Do you have any babies??? Do you have Foamy??? Only one of my childhood ponies I don't have any more... Think Mum threw her out as she used to join me in the bath... Might have gotten a lil water damaged lol.

I may end up needing a bigger tank for all these sea ponies!!! :LOL:
 
Right now I am looking for ponies that are very hard to find like so soft ponies with no flocking loss to upgrade my collection. Unfortunately for me a lot of them are either very expensive or hard to find.

So Softs with no flocking loss... Now there's a tough find.
Some of the So Softs I have found were in such bad shape that they were only good for deflocking. (Not that I know how to do that but I was able to find someone to do it for me)

It's amazing how well they came up! I kinda now have an offshoot to my So Softs, the ones that have been deflocked. Gives me a reason to buy the worst shape So Softs I can find as well as those in the best condition though...
