I've doomed myself to eternal collector's angst because of my grail, more specifically because she might not exist.
When I was 5/6 I had a friend who had every Glo Worm, every Care Bear and every MLP going, I think her dad worked for a toy company or something cause she'd get every toy long before anyone else (they had TWO playrooms in their house, plus her and her brother's huge bedrooms were stuffed from end to end). We played with her herd all the time and my favourite pony was this plain brown pony with pale buttercream hair. I remember she told me that that pony was called "Teacher" and she was Megan's real life pony. I loved that pony, I remember being in bed ill and my friend's dad brought around my three favourite ponies she'd picked out from her herd to keep me company while I was off school and Teacher was one of them. I have a really clear memory of crying from the pain of my blocked sinuses and headache and brushing her hair and feeling better.
So I move away age 6, grow up (sort of ) and at 16 I get into collecting MLP after finding Gingerbread in a charity shop. It wasn't long before I really wanted to get my hands on my favourite childhood pony, Teacher. So I keep my eyes open for her for years, then I got into the online pony community and I discovered that while Megan did have a real life pony, who was the exact colours I remember and was called TJ (said aloud, it's pretty easy to confuse with Teacher), there was never a pony figure released of TJ
The closest pony I've ever found to the TJ/Teacher I remember is Jenny, the Macau version of Snuzzle. I own a lovely Jenny, but it's not the same as getting my hands on a TJ. I definitely remember that she had no symbols - that was one of the very reasons I liked her, she was different from all the other ponies - and the hair colour was different and the body slightly paler.
But then... I remembered her being called Teacher, not TJ. It was a loooooong time ago and the memory plays tricks.
So I'm kind of doomed to never knowing for sure whether there really was a TJ or if my friend had a Macau Snuzzle in her herd and my mind's playing tricks. It's not out of the question for her to have a Macau pony in the UK, like I said I think her dad must've worked for a large toy or toy-related company - I also remember she had a whole box full of flutter pony wings and she just wouldn't have had something like that otherwise.
I choose to believe that there was a prototype made for TJ, it didn't make it into production but the prototype was given to my friend by her dad and I am probably the only adult collector who's ever seen TJ in the flesh. But I still wish I knew for sure!
