Why Do You Sell?

We all know why we collect. The joy of finding that special pony. The nostalgia that comes with rediscovering a pony we cherished as a child. That moment of "OMG I GOT THEM ALL!"

But why do you sell ponies? What makes you decide that now is the time to sell some of your collection?

I know we all have our stories. What's yours?

Here's mine:

I've collected MLP for my whole life. When the G3 first came out, I was 18, with 2 jobs, and a lot of disposable income. I saw it as a chance to regain some of the ponies I had gotten rid of a couple years previously to my young niece. Friends and family got them for me as gifts too. I never opened any of them, just displayed them gleefully all over my room.

Now, I'm almost 27, married, with 2 girls. I haven't collected MLP for a while now. We got a bunch from my sister after her daughter outgrew them, but they've been well loved. My girls play with those. The ones I collected remained in storage for years, until two days ago.

My husband lost his job last Tuesday. Between the 2 of us, we've got a lot of various collectibles. I'm not as attached to the G3 ponies as my G1, or even the G4, so that is the first thing I decided to price and sell.

Even though I'm selling them because my family needs the money, it makes me happy to think that they will be going to homes with people who will truly love them. I've always felt bad about having to keep them stored.

So there's my story! I hope you share yours!!!

i don't. i don't sell :p i can't sell. i just. MY ponies XD

Sometimes it's because in the beginning, we bought a few lots and wound up with ten gazillion extras of this and that. So they're for sale. And sometimes it's because I see them in a thrift store and buy them even if I don't "need them" because I know where they can eventually find a good home (here in the pony community where they're appreciated)(No Pony Left Behind Syndrome). Lately, because I'm frustrated with lack of space, and keeping ponies in stuffy boxes doesn't seem fair and just adds to the general clutter, I'm adding to the sales ponies those in my collection that I'm not really attached to (sometimes I purchased them just to complete a set even if I didn't really care for the colors or whatever). And every now and then I go, "I'm just gonna sell them all off because it's just more STUFF!!" Then I look at their cheery faces and just... just... well, *you* know... they're so much more than just "STUFF"... so they stay.

i don't. i don't sell i can't sell. i just. MY ponies XD
^ LOL!

So there with you CC. I have been loathe to part with ponies. I remember being on the brink of absolute personal poverty and selling a couple of MIB G3s out of my collection to get a few bucks into my bank account and I have NEVER forgiven myself for it.

However, I'm running out of space so now it comes down to, "Who are my extras and how fast can they sell". I just DON'T have the room for extras, as much as I want to keep every one I come across. So I'm slowly getting myself into the frame of mind of "Wash, rinse, sell, repeat".

i sell my extra stuff because it just becomes to much "extra" everywhere.

then i started selling some mib g3's to make room for more g1 and g2 stuff and to pay some of the bills because i had a baby and my boyfriend lost his job. i dont regret it because as long as i have the g1 and g2 then im happy.

i can still remember which 2 ponies i am missing from my original childhood collection and i hate it XD i have sold a few baits and i still sort of hate that aswell. i think they will have to dig me out from my house when i'm old, swimming in ponies :)

Re:

I've been collecting ponies for pretty much my entire life, but untill this day I've never been able to sell any from my own collection. I don't think I ever could.

The few times I've ever sold or traded ponies has been when I've gotten the same pony as I already have in huge lots I've bought, or when I find an upgrade to a pony in my collection I will sell the one in least mint shape of the two. But even then I have to wait untill I actually find an upgrade for the pony to be able to actually part with it :p

Maybe I'm greedy, I don't know. But I can't see myself ever having the heart to reducing my collection. It means too much to me :) Even though it's just "stuff" ;)

my sentiments exactly. I don't think I could ever sell my entire collection. My ponies mean the world to me after all the trades, buys or swaps. I worked too hard to throw them all away. I have too many warm fuzzy memories. I may keep them in bins downstairs but it doesnt mean I don't love them or know where all of them are. I will have another pony room someday :) I keep believing.

That's how I feel sometimes too!! And it's not even with collection ponies (those are NEVER going anywhere, even the upgraded ones!) - I bought lots with the intentions of selling the extras, and then I can't bring myself to do it!! 00) I worry - what if someone buys this pony and baits her? She's not in baity condition (to my eyes), but I can't dictate what people do with their ponies! So I think, "okay, she's not mint, I'll keep this one and take a gross pony out of circulation, and no one will mind." But then I find the mint ones and I think "ooh I want to keep her she's so SHINY!" :goingcrazy5B15D:

I don't sell very often but I have. Whenever I have duplicates I always give away or sell them, I would just rather have the space for ponies I don't have. And there have been one or two times when money was really tight and I sold a few. I sometimes wish I hadn't of done it but really I couldn't tell you which ones they were. I only sold the ones in my collection that I really didn't care for all that much and I think a few times I used the money to buy other ponies that I did really want. I don't think I personally could part with my whole collection but a few ones here or there happen sometimes. Just remind yourself that down the road when things get a little better you can always buy them again if you want. That's one of the best parts about collecting is the searching and aquiring of ponies, I mean, if you had every single pony and pony accessory then what would you do?

Hahaha! I'll look for you on that show horders XD

I sell because I have 2 kids. I was blessed as a kid with a mom and dad who busted their bums to make sure my brother had all the GI Joe's/transformers and that I had all the ponies/LPS any kid to ever ask for...mostly from yardsales and whatnot, but still. I want to be able to give my kids that same security and joy that my parents gave me. My memories aren't attached to the toys even though they have sentimental value, so I part with my ponies to provide for my kids and it allows me to be a stay at home mom and still contribute to the household :)

I sell because I'm constantly upgrading my ponies. I buy lots, intending to upgrade on or two ponies and then have to sell my "old" pony and all the others in the lot. It also keeps me active in the community. I love cleaning the ponies and interacting with others in the community. I've made a few friends that way from all over the world. I love how far the pony community reaches.

I'll admit it, I've never been able to sell a pony. Heck... I even bought an extra couple g4s here and there (the ones that have been harder to find) thinking I could sell them to folks who were unable to find them locally... and I couldn't do it. LMAO It's ridiculous really.

Once we finish fixing up our old house here, I've promised myself though that I will go through my ponies and purge some. I don't get the same level of pleasure from all of them... and I'd rather have those few I've always wanted rather than a huge quantity that don't mean the same amount to me.

So I will be TRYING to sell some hopefully by this Autumn. But we'll see. LOL

I'm in a couple different fandoms aside from MLP and I enjoy collecting from all of them. But alas, my earnings are small which means I'm always living in a tiny apartment and I move often. This leads me to constantly pick through all my collections and ask myself "Do I really want this?" My space is limited and everything I buy I think "I'm just going to have to pack this up and move it again." So with those things in mind, I only pick through and keep the ponies I really want when I purchase a lot or buy a bunch from the thrift store.

I also have that no pony left behind syndrom. I feel bad for them when they're in the thrift store bins. I'll at least take them home, give them a bath and find them a new place to live if I don't have any room for them in my herd. Plus, I will admit, the extra cash is handy for buying more collectables.

I worry - what if someone buys this pony and baits her? She's not in baity condition

This^ I buy ponies because i feel bad for them and i know someone else will buy them and bait them ._. i love all ponies

Hahaha! I'll look for you on that show horders XD

hahaha that's so where i am going XD

I love how so many people sell because of No Pony Left Behind. Finding lost ponies and making sure they get into the community is such a great thing.

There are some G1 ponies I think would break my heart if I ever parted with though. Even if I found the same pony later on, it wouldn't be the same pony. The one who I played with in my room, who raced across my shelves, whose hair I meticulously brushed and braided.

My husband still laughs when I pick up a pony and make it 'gallop'. Its just second nature when I pick one up :D

I don't sell ponies very often.

I sell the ones which are duplicates (unless it's a pony I love), ponies which I simply don't like (i.e G2s) or I trade them if there's a pony I reeeeally want on offer.

Once I start trawling boot sales I may sell more often, depending on what I can find! I'd never sell a G1.

I sold all my G3's bc they just stopped doing it for me, lol
I only kept Tinkatinkatoo bc she is my favorite of course.
I couldn't part with my G1's.

I sell ponies to support my pony buying habits. When I find ponies in thrift stores or garage sales I sell the ones I already have or don't want. I also must admit that I am affected by No Pony Left Behind too. There's also nothing better than taking a filthy, tangle-haired pony and restoring her to something close to her (or his!) former glory.

Well said. ^
