Welcome to my Retro Mane 6 Pack review and comparison thread. In it I'm going to talk about my thoughts on these girls. I'm going to do them one at a time because I don't have G3 Rarity yet and there's too many pictures for a single post. (Plus I don't feel like waking Obsidi to borrow some of her G4s at this hour.) So look out for updates.
The box is big and has nice artwork.
Without further ado, let's look at the first pony.
Rainbowdash:
There are obvious seams, the plastic is hard and has no slight squish to it. The hair is a bit thin, but silky to the point of being slippery and doesn't want to lie down. Her hair distribution is more like a G3's, thicker in the mane, thinner in the tail. But not quite as thin a tail as a G4's. Unfortunately it's still coming out of her butthole.
The eyes seem to be a different shape then G1, G3 and G4, have no socket sculpting and while a little big, they no longer take up most of the pony's face. The ears are more cat-like and not as sharp as a G1's. She's about the size of a G4. The back of the skull is a little rounder then it ought to be. Kinda eminds me of the G3 Minty pose head. She can turn her head all the way around like the demon girl from The Exorcist.
Her symbol is very different from G4 Rainbowdash. Someone on the Arena compared it to Lightning's symbol. The legs and joints are a lot nicer. Instead of G4 or G3 wings, she's got G1 wings and they're too big for her, unlike a G1 baby's. They're also too low, connecting to the legs instead of the shoulders.
Here's a comparison to a G1. I always saw her as a relative to Whizzer. When you put Retro RD down, she can balance on all fours easily. Giving you 2 display options for the Pegasi and Unipeg. The body and joints seem thicker and more G1-like on the Pegasus in this set.
An ear comparison.
Here she is with G3 Rainbowdash, she's a darker blue then her predecessor and matte instead of pearly.
Here is a head comparison. The ears and eyes aren't as detailed as a G3's, and the skull is a bit flatter in places. Her eyes are dark pink instead of multi-colored.
Here she is with G4 RD. G4 is actually a paler blue. The ears and eyes are smaller, the face is defined, not bulbous at all and horse like. The body is thicker and the joints more defined. The eyes aren't as round. She's more proportionate all around.
The symbols can't be properly compared since Magical Scenery Dash's is very different from other toys. Gives me a bit of variety in my small RD army.
And here's a group shot.
Hope you enjoyed the first look. Next time I'll be reviewing Fluttershy.
