G1 Basic Fun Retro Ponies: A Collector's Guide

Ok but haven’t all the other basic fun ponies been released in sets of 4? Do you suppose there’s a 4th Celestial Pony not shown here?! I don’t collect the BF ones but I’m definitely making an exception for these ladies!
There is a 4th pony on the art that I don't see among the prototypes. This gal

There are two variants I noticed in the zebra-like pattern as well. The one you've used shows thicker, fainter lines that face out as they reach the head... I noticed the other version of them from the same even has thinner, whiter lines that cover the head. A small detail, I'm not sure if someone mentioned it already. Gonna have to catch up on this thread later.
Ooh yes, I noticed that too! I wonder what the pattern for the pink one not shown would be like
I feel like its going to be one of those "no two are alike" with the mix of the colors like that.
I thought that too and if it will be like that I’m sure there’s gonna be some pretty unique patterns out there

Yeah! Honestly though both versions look really nice...

As for it being "no two versions are alike", I could see that as a possibility for sure but stripes on the face or not is definitely intentional.

Still though, if they do happen to be "each one unique" like that it'd be even harder to choose between them... The patterns themselves definitely have some little differences though, with the faded-head pattern looking more like a zebra and the other one looking more like brush strokes or partially mixed paint. I'd expect that much to be intentional, as well.

ok am definitely getting this basic fun set :) so hugely happy they are making these guys

They've skipped ponies in sets before. Skyflier and Powder. A good chunk of the Twinkle Eyes.

I think the reason some don't have patterns on the face is simply because they're prototypes . . . If you look closely, there are seemingly two of the pink pony with blue hair: one with a ribbon in her tail, who has face swirls, and one without a ribbon, who doesn't have face swirls. The blue pony with swirls on her face also has a ribbon.

To me this suggests that the ponies with swirls are the more "complete" ones.

This was at Dallas Toy Show, which is meant to hype up toys to retailers, and they wouldn't necessarily have needed all four ponies physically present to get the idea across. Or maybe they are just making three, who knows. Obviously I am hoping for all four! But this is definitely a moment of "The amazing thing isn't that it was done perfectly, but that it was done at all" for me.

The word from the person who took the pictures is Amazon was interested in picking up this set.

oh that's an interesting thought... I looked at the images and saw just digital camera quirks so admittedly I had assumed that the marbling effect was all done by paint technique so the toys themselves would be uniform in look... guess we will find out once these guys are available. Does anyone know if this line will be hitting stores like Target? I know I for one hope so like how it was for stranger things AJ

One thing I do hope is that they make another pony pose - like a powder pose or sugarberry pose - for the 4th celestial :)

These are wonderful! I agree with @Leave a Whisper about the chase figures. It makes the scalping worse and hard for everyone to enjoy them. I've been guilty of chasing different types for my son and it's like once you get it, then what lol. I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for this set, the minis and the plushies! Very exciting.

That too. Scalpers suck.

It's exciting to see the Celestial ponies in the "flesh" but I have a funny feeling that they're going to go the same direction of the Flutter Ponies and sadly not get an actual release.

I am extremely excited for the mini's (show style Spike specifically no matter how goofy he looks). But I wonder what ponies will get an actual release since the box says "7 to collect." I am sad to see yet another release of the collector pose ponies, can we maybe get some new ponies in this pose, or better yet a Year 4 basic pony set release? Like say maybe So Softs, or new Twinkle Eyes better yet actually release the flutters. :( I would also die for a re-release of Shady and Big Brothers.

PLUSHIES!! I am excited for these, the OG plush pattern but with embroidered eyes and symbols. Everything I've always wanted in my G1 original Hasbro plushies. <3 I need Firefly for sure and Glory is high up on my list.

Ehhh, but the concept art also appears to not have patterns on their faces, from what I noticed. But even so I did also get the impression those were the earlier versions, they seem less polished.

Also definitely hoping for all four. I think it could be nice if they actually make the all-pink one a more pastel palette, despite making the others quite vibrant. A lighter pink seems like it would go a little better with the green symbol, to me.

That thought crossed my mind too but I hope not. I've heard they're looking for feedback on it, so it kinda feels like they're more committed to this one.

Ok first off this is sooooo exciting, getting NEW g1 ponies? Amazing, absolutely amazing. New characters, the myth of the celestial ponies, so magical. I am super excited and hopeful that there will be more potential new ponies coming.

Mini ponies? Ahhhhh I hope there is a cherries jubilee, they are cute.

Now that all being said I have to say as fun as they are they are very underwhelming. I know they are prototypes and whatnot but where is the shimmer and the shine and the glitter? I would think they would be more like the shiny coated hair do set with more pizzazz, but ok marbling IS cool. Though the lines not matching with the body and the head on the dark blue one would drive me a bit mad.... and lastly please I hope they change the colours up. If not that pink one is just yet another fancy version of Melody essentially, the purple teal combo of the artwork is so pretty.

All that whining aside, I am definitely buying them, no doubt!

I believe they were originally intented to have tinsel in their hair, maybe the prototypes lack it for budget/time constraint reasons? Or maybe they won't have it at all. Still love them though.

Video is up from the person who took the pics!

VERY informative!

Box mock up! Very early version of the box.

Mock up of the side of the box . . . I think this indicates they are planning to release all four ponies. (Currently using the white pony's image as a placeholder.)

The pony on the right is an earlier prototype, the pony on the left is the newer prototype.

At one point they had two prototypes of the blue pony next to each other . . . I couldn't tell if they had different marbling patterns or not, maybe one of you will have sharper eyes!

Thank you for linking the video, it was very informative and the vendors at the booth were so kind and helpful too to let her film

I even watched right through to the end even though I’m not gonna allow myself to grow my old Care Bears collection… I say as I have my old Friend Bear right here. Maybe I’ll keep an eye out on those micro minis…

Back to ponies, explains why there’s more than 7 pony figures! That was very unexpected! Shame about chase figures but I guess that was coming since blind box

The Celestial ponies are nice and I'm hoping for the pink one cause she has my favourite color combo of the bunch. However, I would've been even more excited if any sea or flutter ponies were hinted for this 40th anniversary booth. Feels like G1 ponies are becoming more and more expensive to afford, so for collectors like me who live away from the US and need to pay import/customs tax for everything on top of the already crazy prices these would've been a great alternative to make our collections feel more complete :)
