I thought I successfully de rusted my BBE gusty yesterday but I came to see it today and the eyes were both so rusted they are almost completly blacked out and were hard to pull apart. I did not let it touch water at all and it was conpletly rust free and dry when I put it into the head. I'm not sure why this happened? It's worse than when I originally got it now.

I've been soaking the eyes in double strength vinegar to de rust again but I'm not sure what to do since they are so hard to get in without boiling water I don't want to do that again. Anybody know why the rust was so bad?

i did a bit of research, it seems to be the vinegar itself. the vinegar removed the rust that was present initially, but being an acid it reacted with/dissolved the newly exposed metal, leaving it open to rust again. if i understood the science correctly, the acid dissolved the rust, revealing the non-rusted metal beneath, but the acidity/water in the vinegar/oxygen hitting the newly exposed metal caused the reaction to happen all over again. if you use vinegar to de-rust, you're apparently supposed to neutralize it with baking soda afterwards. This is so interesting! I really love Beddy Bye Eyes so I often derust them and I have wondered about why sometimes it dries worse than it was before…. Guess thats why!

I never knew the thing about baking soda so I’ve also had success in just cleaning it again and drying it well. I also know some people use alternate things to derust ponies (I’ve heard good things about Rit Rust remover but never tried it myself because its kinda expensive here) so that might be something to keep in mind if you get any more of these guys.

so as far as i'm aware, rit rust remover has been discontinued (at least stateside); i was never able to try it cause all i can find is old product for resale on amazon. they have another "color remover" product sometimes advertised as a rust remover but i'm not positive if it's meant for that, since the box doesn't make any mention of rust. i wonder if it would actually work for the purposes we'd use it for. i've always used the old plain mint toothpaste method for rust and haven't run into any issues with that. just gotta wash it out really well so pony isn't minty fresh lol

Oh that makes sense I guess? I'm currently soaking it in some WD-40 but will use baking soda next if that doesn't work. Thanks!

Yes I really wanted to use the RIT brand since people have found luck with it but it's not super accessible in my country.

I get RIT dyemore from ebay cos I am in the UK. RC car modellers use it to dye car bodies.
