Brushed yarn hair?

I rerooted a pony for a commission and now the final step is to make the yarn hair poofy. Has anyone ever done this before? How did you go about doing so without losing a ton of hair!?

I have done it plenty of times, unfortunately you will loose lots of hair, on the plus side it will still look puffy afterwards, just be as gentle and patient as possible and hold the hair close to the head, work from head to tip works best for me.
