I have been working around the clock for about three weeks now trying to get 24 little ornaments finished in time for my mum to have an advent calendar this year.

As a child I remember all through December right up to Christmas getting up and being so excited to open the next gift of the advent calendar that my sister and I always shared. It wasn't a big fancy pricey thing. My mum took a piece of plywood and painted a tree on it, then put on 24 nails and numbered them. Each day we took turns opening a little wrapped decoration and hanging it off it's nail. I got to start it every year, because my older sister had to be the even numbers so she could do the final gift on her birthday (Dec 24th)

This year I decided to haul out the old christmas tree board and wrap up 24 home made decorations and let my mum do the advent calendar. They didn't cost much to make, and some are better than others, but I'm so proud of it, and myself, and I just know that mum will love it, she is one of those people where something home made means so much more to her.

I even made her a home made "shelf elf" that I will be doing stuff with right up to Christmas morning. The real shelf elf scares me so I crocheted one that is friendlier looking, and cost waaaay less to make too.

Here is a picture of it all set up in the front hall by our door.

Aw, your little shelf elf is totally cute!

That's so nice idea :) Love it <3. And that home made elf is fantastic! I wish I could be as handy to make those too!

reporting in....she walked right passed it this morning. We have decided that she is Tea Blind in the morning. She notices nothing as she heads to the kettle. She did eventually notice it and stood there speechless for a few minutes. Now she wants to take the elf everywhere and show it off. "You only learned to crochet two weeks ago..." is all she had to say at first. She now wants to open all 24 ornaments.

I'd want to show it off too! It's really adorable. And only two weeks of experience, wow!

(Tea Blind... lol! Love it)

I just realized Ineddto do an advent calendar too. If I manage to get the pony one soon

Cute idea! You have crochet talent! Great job!
I still NEEEED to get out our Christmas totes of decor this week! (normally we set up right after we eat on Thanksgiving) This year is just different.

That is such a neat idea~ I've heard of advent calendar chocolates that count down to Christmas, but have never heard of unwrapping ornaments to hang on nails. I but the anticipation of seeing what the ornament looks like is very exciting~
And that shelf elf is just adorbs.

and I just know that mum will love it, she is one of those people where something home made means so much more to her.

That's how my stepdad was... he was always so much happier when I hand-crafted gifts. I do miss practically being able to just make whatever I feel like making, and him making me feel like I really did something worthwhile... but as I grow older, those are merely fond memories to cherish

Your little Shelf Elf is way cuter than the store ones (they always creep-ed me out a bit too!), and seriously, two weeks of crocheting and you made that!! I can't crochet to save my life, that is amazing!
Also, you need to show us the finished advent calendar on Christmas!! We always had one growing up as well, my grandmother made it out of mostly felt and other odd bits (a lot of the cords were pony tail holders). The final one was a little plastic baby in a walnut shell representing Jesus in the manger. I think my mom still has it somewhere, now I want to put it up! I never thought to make little gifts for each day, that is so cool!

Lev, I will for sure take a picture of it when it's all finished. So far my mum is having a blast each morning as she gets to open a new gift...and find the elf who likes to wander around the house.

You're a sweetie to your mom! It's memories like these she will cherish forever. :ponylove:

I think the sentiment behind this is the best part of all. This is something special that will make your mama happy for years to come. :)
