G1 Does anyone know, why Starsine is the new Chosen One™?

I am surprised Parasol doesn't appear as much. She has the rainbow hair and is also pink, which is supposed to appeal to girls (big or small).

I think it's the cutiemark tbh, since the Cutiemark is so simple it's easy to replicate onto merchandise. I also think the white is a stronger design choice.

I wish there was more Parasol! She’s one of my favorites. She’s just so darn cute.
 
starshine better than peachy as ambassador IMO and I am guessing that she's an easier transition to move folks away from celestia (overload) perhaps? Me I am just glad that MLP merch has horse heads again thanks to retro (not a fan of G5 head design at all)
 
I have a Starshine retro PJ, and in my opinion, she is chosen exactly because of the thing you described. If someone think of 80s, 90s childhood nostalgia, the first things that comes in mind are rainbows, colorful, vivid or pastel stuff, stars and so on. Okay, they could choose any other rainbow pony but maybe the rearing rainbow pegasus represents the happiness and childhood dreams. And yes, she looks very generic.
 
I personally don't mind it. Starshine and Parasol were my two favorites as a child. I kind of wish the retro art was so flat and graphic though - no matter what pony it is. I much prefer the painterly box art.
 
White fantasy ponies with rainbow hair are popular and easy to match to any background, so that's probably why. Spirit the Winged Unicorn, Starlite from Rainbow Brite, and the Lisa Frank unicorns are some other classics. :)

The weird colored ponies on merch don't bother me, I think they're interesting. I bought a licensed MLP coloring book from China and I'm not sure if a single pony is the correct color, lol. Which is partly why I bought it.

Anyway we all know Rose Birthflower pony is the real break out of G1 retro merch, lol. What an arc. Fame and fortune.

Edit: Rose is especially funny to me because any time they use Rose, they could have used Sundance instead. Who did Rose bribe??
