Opinions on Unboxing Mint ponies (CONTROVERSIAL I KNOW LOL.)

Definitely! My collection will definitely never be sold as i don't see a reason to. i will appreciate them throughout my entire life and the value of my collection is something i've never really considered because it's the joy it brings to me that matters most, not how much money i can make from it!

I also find the experience of finally getting the super rare pony you've been looking for since forever extremely rewarding... so i don't see why i should leave her in box, she's never experienced love since leaving the factory so i'm definitely going to give it to her now! Plus i've worked so hard to locate her so i may as well reward myself by getting the satisfaction of opening her so my inner child can gush over her pretty mane, glitter and colors!

I'm so terrible i've had my eye on a few Baby Dancing Butterflies still in the plastic mailing bag and in mint condition (which i believe to be rare and expensive i'm not 100% sure but from what i've seen she seems like a pricey one) and even if i did manage to get her i honestly think i'd take her out of the bag purely so i can appreciate the enjoyment of getting a brand new squeaky clean pony in all of her glory (even if it makes some people cringe so bad) LOL.
I haven’t checked mint in bag vs mint out of bag, but I wouldn’t expect the value to depreciate as much as a mint ON CARD/BOX due to the uniqueness of the packaging.

A pint in high demand, like TAF babies will retain better value overall, no matter what.

That's actually super helpful to know! Thank you so much!

I'm still new to collecting so i'm unsure on value of a lot of ponies and i don't know where i can check for the value of them so i know what to look for and what is overpriced ect.

i think the one i saw in bag was very pricey like £500... totally out of my depth here and don't know if that is correct or horrendously overpriced.

when I was little I wish I kept the boxes, especially the back cards but I do not have them.
I tried to keep back cards and flattened boxes. My parents tossed my stuff out. I wanted the back card stories and for reference for the series set.

I got a Star Catcher in a lot a while back. I had not looked her up until your post. The plastic bracing has torn her wings, so I need to fix her. Tacky glue? Fabri-tac?

Unbox a pony if you want. But please save the paper/cardboard. So many haven't and that's lost bits of art.
A light box could probably be hung on a tack in a closet or something to keep it out of the way.

Also, @Sweetling, can you share a picture of her out of box? Nice minty and freshly styled?

I'm always team they're your toys, do what you want. Preserve the box as best you can and enjoy your pony. :winkpony:

I have a 17" MH doll that I didn't unbox initially due to display space and now I'm hesitant to unbox her cause the prices skyrocketed on them. So I get the reluctance!

Personally: I love love loveee unboxing toys! I’ve even done a few unboxing videos haha, even if they’re old or vintage or rare or whatever.
I get collectors wanting to keep things in box for their collections, but I also don’t think anyone should feel guilty or shame for unboxing a toy. Toys are meant to be loved, used, ect. So if you wanna unbox it, Do so! You could always be like me and keep the box for display purposes anyways, even if you took the pony out of the box!
Ultimately: It’s your toy you paid money for. So do whatever you want with it!

I haven’t had that happen to my collection , fortunately. The ponies I’ve kept MOC/MIB are still like the day I got them, including G1s I bought 15-20 years ago. Even my G3 Diveine Shines look good. I think this is due too me keeping them in a light controlled room wiith central air that keeps humidity at a more reasonable level.

I have only seen yellowing of the bubble on a couple of my MOC Lil Litters, but that process had already started when I acquired them 10+ years ago. I wonder if it’s something that once activated can’t be stopped, but can potentially be prevented.
That’s great that yours still look new!
Maybe it’s just the ones I’ve seen. I don’t actively look for G1. I definitely have theories about humidity and storage conditions from what I have experienced with MLP and doll collecting. It does seem like once exposed to triggering conditions it starts a process or something. I sometimes wonder if it’s that or particular batches and the conditions they were manufactured in too. Like, with G4 some of the head/body mismatches are so bad and some not so much. I’ve had so much curiosity about why that is and if it can be prevented or mitigated.

Its your pony, you can take her out if you want to :)

I probably would not take her out, but its really all up to you ♥

I agree! I’ve always been super picky about what I bring into the herd. NM or M only. Ponies I found in the wild also had to be free of defects over than dirty and I would put them through a thorough cleaning process to kill anything that might have been in them. I didn’t want to introduce something into the herd and have it spread.

No way to prove any of this, but all of my ponies are 100% free of any problems after 25 years collecting and over 3000 ponies in the pony room.

When G3 Snowflake was first released I kept her MIB even though I opened all the other winter ponies. I knew she was sought after and valuable and that she’d be worth more in-box which was apparently more important to me at the time.

In 2009 I sold the valuable pieces of my collection to pay for Christmas presents for my kids and Snowflake was one of them. I also sold a Mimic and a Frisco but Snowflake has always been the one I was most sad about. This year my adult daughter bought me a beautifully MIB Snowflake and the first thing I did, with tears streaming down my face, was remove her from her box. I’ve known for a long time that if I ever got her back I was going to enjoy her to my heart’s content and I don’t regret that one bit. I’m keeping her box but she’s sitting happily front-and-center on my shelf and my heart lurches every time I notice her. :blueheart:

This is such a beautiful little story.

I bet the value of her in your eyes has gone up so much since it was a gift from your wonderful daughter <3

I agree with the earlier comment that a lot of the older ponies seem to break down in packaging. To each their own, but I decided ages ago that MIB collecting wasn't for me because I wanted to see the full condition of something I get and the damage from some
Of those boxes and ties etc.

Do what makes you happy. It's your pony at the end of the day.

I don't have the space to keep my ponies in box. The ones I do still have in box, I am selling because I didn't get attached to them (and that's a grand total of 2 lol). I would definitely open the pony you love so much and admire it how you want, free from its plastic prison. :)

As many have already said it's up to you. I just know what I would do. :)
