Painting G1 playsets

As I've found myself in the position of having a lot of free time lately I decided to get around to cleaning some playsets I acquired but haven't had time to do much with. My Crimp and Curl salon isn't too bad and just needs a clean but my Satin slipper sweet shoppe is sadly in need of more work.

It's quite mucky and yellowing and the floor looks badly stained. I've decided to customise it a bit when I fix it up but I would like some advice from people who've customised G1 playsets before. Is there anything I have to be particularly careful with? Is there a type of paint best for this sort of thing? Any tips and hints would be much appreciated.:satisfied:

I've done a custom show stable before. Used regular acrylic paint and sealed everything really well. It's held up for the most part, except on the hinges on the roof.

Sealing will be especially important if you're going to display ponies on it. You don't want to risk paint transfer.

Regular acrylic paint would work just fine. We used that for my daughter's dollhouse. I can't wait to see when it's done.

I'm curious about this too! I think it'd be neat to see some custom G1 playsets. I wish some people who have done it could post pics!

Someone on the arena did a fantastic dream castle repaint in pearlescent blues.

I think painting older playsets is a bang up idea. You can really set a theme with the right colours and accessories. Anyone have any photos of some they've done?

For a smoother look, make sure your acrylic paint is more liquidy-- instead of the acrylic from paint tubes for paintings, use the bottled ones in the craft section-- or water the acrylics down a bit. If you do thinner layers and more of them, the paint will lay smoother, versus the bumps and ridges you sometimes get from thicker paint and brush strokes.

I don't recommend modge-podge as a sealer. A lot of pony and custom tutorials have recommended it in the past and I find it can be unstable, sometimes sticky, especially in humidity. I use Krylon ( think) matte finish with UV resistance. It works well :)

Thanks very much for the advice, everybody, especially WaterRaven and Elfpony for their very useful tips. :) I'll be sure to post pictures when I'm done. Like the rest of you, I'd love to see more customs. Sometimes play sets are so badly damaged they need a new lease of life. I've wanted a sweet shoppe since forever so I'm determined to not leave it yellowing and icky up in the attic for the rest of time!

I'll be sure to find a good sealer. I've got a Scoops who can't wait to open up her new shop!

This is all great advice! Thank you, everyone! I will definitely keep this all in mind!

Looking forward to seeing your pics, Tsubomisky!! :D

Krylon is good for playsets as it's formulated to stick to plastic. Other types of paint may work but for durability I would chose Krylon spray paints.

Take apart the piece as much as possible and if you have stickers on the playset try using painters tape to cover them (check to make sure it won't damage the stickers first). If there are spots you miss you can spray a gob of spray paint on a plate and use a small brush to dab into corners or tight spots.
