I'll keep this in mind thank you :blue:

Does anybody know if benzoyl peroxide has the same effects on other types of plastic? Or even the vinyl of other toys like doll heads? I know a lot of people in doll communities still use it, and I'm wondering if that's safe or not.

it affects vinyls that have unnatural colors, so pinks, blues, greens etc because of the dyes used for it. skintone colored vinyls i think are generally safe, but i wouldn't try testing it out. the long lasting effects are not worth the risk :(

I've heard stories of bleaching in the LPS community. Not sure what exact type of plastic they're made of unfortunately, but it's harder than G1s, closer in squishiness to G3s; possible to squish on some older ones, but newer/less worn ones are pretty hard. Not sure how much any of that helps lol
Doing a quick search, it seems like the Monster High (and probably Ever After High by extension) communities have similar issues with benzoyl perodixe, so any vinyl dolls/toys are probably a no-go.

so i've read the book that discusses at length benzoyl peroxide for use in vinyl dolls - "The Definitive Book on the Care and Preservation of Vinyl Dolls and Action Figures" by Nicholas Hill. this book is cited on the pony preservation project and came out in the late 90s, so i'd assume what happened was doll collectors got ahold of this book and pony collectors tried out the methods inside to varying degrees of success. i can't go and check it, since i had to get it from interlibrary loan, but as memory serves the benzoyl peroxide was only used on light skintone colored plastics that hadn't been colored with any type of dye; and it's advised not to use it on dolls with a darker skintone, or on painted areas and clothes. from what i've read on doll forums and reddit the method continues to be used without any evident problems on light toned dolls, at least as of now, so it's probably ok for use on the dolls that are known to not have any adverse reactions. if you can't find any info on whether benzoyl is safe for your particular doll though, i wouldn't risk it.

Benzoyl peroxide has a greater affinity for plastic than other cleaning agents because of its chemical structure. I suspect this is why it leaches out from the original application site. It literally soaks into the plastic. And it's much more chemically stable than hydrogen peroxide, so it stays active and continues to bleach much longer. I am not aware of any research that has looked at how it affects various types of plastic, but I would consider use on any plastic risky. The effects may not be as visible or less obvious in lighter colors, like the skin tones of many dolls, but there may be damage that isn't visible to the naked eye and may not be apparent right away.

Oh no..... The Nightlight in the pictures is mine and so is Baby Lickety Split. Still have them both. *sighs* Pony pals, really dont use this stuff on ponies. Or any other type of bleach, it makes them brittle.
How long did it take before you saw the bleaching? I have never used it but I do buy ponies off ebay pretty frequently and would be devastated if I brought an affected one into the herd. I do store my ponies with acid free tissue paper between them and try to keep them from making any kind of contact...

I should dig up my baity G3 Rainbow Dash, she was the subject of experiments and now has a white blotch on her face from benzoyl peroxide stain removal. On the pearly/metallic G3s it initially seems fine but many years later it has managed to take some of the color out.

Edit: oh she was right here

This doesn't effect my plans for her at all, if anything it just adds to her overall grungy/punk vibe.
