Hey all,

You may have noticed my absence over the past couple of days; here’s what happened, because I could not make this up if I tried:

On Friday, a massive power outage hit multiple local counties here in Maryland following strong winds, and freezing near-zero temperatures. One of my best friends is a very busy local pet sitter, and she was immediately overwhelmed with crisis situations as a result.

The most urgent, of course, were any types of fish or reptiles. She had a client across the street from me with a bearded dragon that was getting cold fast and heavily at risk of eventually dying from the cold. I immediately agreed to take him in and keep him warm and safe until the power came back.

He arrived to me in a tiny vet carrier with only his bowl of food (his tank was too large to move and the heat lamp was attached). So I did my best to make him as comfortable as possible in a large storage bin with a space heater in my bathroom.

It turned out that what caused the power outage was a huge uprooted tree that took out three power poles. When the utility company discovered the extent of this damage, they shut off my power, without warning, as a safety precaution, only hours after little Caesar arrived.

This led to an emergency midnight Uber at less than 5° to a local hotel.

The very first thing I did was an emergency thawing for Caesar, even though I had bundled him up for the trip:

I had only packed for one night because I assumed I would be able to go back Saturday morning, but here it is Sunday night, and I will be here through tomorrow, as crews are struggling to install new electric poles in the frozen ground. As a person with multiple medical conditions and disabilities, this has been an enormously stressful weekend, as I have struggled to secure the basic necessities for my health. DoorDash has been a true lifesaver.

All in all, Christmas didn’t really happen for me this year, as I’ve been too busy surviving the circumstances and helping my friend network and arrange for a number of animals to find safe havens, which I would always do in a heartbeat, however I could.

So as I prepare for my 3rd night here at this hotel, please enjoy this photo of Caesar (who is quite happy and chilling on a soft towel in a storage bin, sitting on a heating pad in the bathroom), and I hope that you and yours are warm and safe. <3

I have a ton of correspondence to catch up with when I eventually get back home, as I am a devoted desktop user, and I’m not nearly as efficient with my phone. If you were waiting to hear from me, I appreciate your patience.

@Skybreeze, @Sassarazzmadazzles and @Gingerbread will be more than happy to help you with anything you need in the meantime.

The fire extinguisher is in the mod lounge next to the jar of cookies. ;)

I’m sure Cesar, his family and your best friend are really thankful for you helping out, especially over this holiday season. Do all you must and keep safe and warm :Flutter4:

Sounds so stressful but it’s so sweet of you to go the extra mile to help your friend and Cesar. Thinking of you and hoping you make it home safe and sound (and warm) tomorrow.

You're such an awesome friend for going above and beyond for their beloved pet. I'm sure Cesar appreciated being warm and safe in such frigid winter storms. You stay safe and warm too Jewel.

Aww I’m sorry that you didn’t really get to do Christmas, but it was so nice of you to keep Caesar safe  He looks nice and happy.
I hope you’re able to get home soon, relax and have a little bit late Christmas

Hi all, and thanks for the warm wishes <3 I'm back home at last and the internet has finally returned. My little buddy Caesar has gone home and I miss him already!

Should be status quo until the next crisis comes along ;)
Glad to hear you two made it through safely :Flutter4:

I'm so happy both of you are safe!

Our power went out on Christmas eve as well so that was very stressful lol
it did come back on same day so our beardy and pet fish were thankfully not in danger of getting to cold!

I'm so glad you were able to return to your warm and electrified homes <3
