Hey all,
You may have noticed my absence over the past couple of days; here’s what happened, because I could not make this up if I tried:
On Friday, a massive power outage hit multiple local counties here in Maryland following strong winds, and freezing near-zero temperatures. One of my best friends is a very busy local pet sitter, and she was immediately overwhelmed with crisis situations as a result.
The most urgent, of course, were any types of fish or reptiles. She had a client across the street from me with a bearded dragon that was getting cold fast and heavily at risk of eventually dying from the cold. I immediately agreed to take him in and keep him warm and safe until the power came back.
He arrived to me in a tiny vet carrier with only his bowl of food (his tank was too large to move and the heat lamp was attached). So I did my best to make him as comfortable as possible in a large storage bin with a space heater in my bathroom.
It turned out that what caused the power outage was a huge uprooted tree that took out three power poles. When the utility company discovered the extent of this damage, they shut off my power, without warning, as a safety precaution, only hours after little Caesar arrived.
This led to an emergency midnight Uber at less than 5° to a local hotel.
The very first thing I did was an emergency thawing for Caesar, even though I had bundled him up for the trip:
I had only packed for one night because I assumed I would be able to go back Saturday morning, but here it is Sunday night, and I will be here through tomorrow, as crews are struggling to install new electric poles in the frozen ground. As a person with multiple medical conditions and disabilities, this has been an enormously stressful weekend, as I have struggled to secure the basic necessities for my health. DoorDash has been a true lifesaver.
All in all, Christmas didn’t really happen for me this year, as I’ve been too busy surviving the circumstances and helping my friend network and arrange for a number of animals to find safe havens, which I would always do in a heartbeat, however I could.
So as I prepare for my 3rd night here at this hotel, please enjoy this photo of Caesar (who is quite happy and chilling on a soft towel in a storage bin, sitting on a heating pad in the bathroom), and I hope that you and yours are warm and safe.
I have a ton of correspondence to catch up with when I eventually get back home, as I am a devoted desktop user, and I’m not nearly as efficient with my phone. If you were waiting to hear from me, I appreciate your patience.
@Skybreeze, @Sassarazzmadazzles and @Gingerbread will be more than happy to help you with anything you need in the meantime.
The fire extinguisher is in the mod lounge next to the jar of cookies.
