Hi all! my mother kept her carebears and a couple of other childhood plushies in a plastic container for years, move after move. One of the ones she kept was a G1 plush! I really really love her, her hair feels so good to brush, it sits so pretty, she feels so soft, and with the exclusion of a little scratch on one eye her eyes are fully intact. Judging by the yellow star cutie mark she has to be Starshine, right? But Starshine has a red streak- but instead of the red, she has a purple streak. I looked online and this is not the only one I found like that. Is there a reason why some of them have purple streaks? Or is it a mystery lol

Maybe they started producing them with one color and then switched to the other color in later production runs for some reason, be it the later color was easier or cheaper to get somehow or they thought it looked better haha.
Personally I think some of the G1 plushes are inaccurate in general... especially the Moondancer plush. It doesn't look like her at all!

looks like the closed mouth variant has the purple and the open mouth has pink

I used to have a plush Parasol with a purple streak like that. Hasbro Softies weren't always the most accurate in color, which is funny since they were made in-house by Hasbro. For example, their Moondancer plush has totally pink hair and a yellow / orange horn.

My mom loves unicorns (which is how I ended up with MLP, another little girl in our apartment building in the 80s had one so mom started buying them for me!) and some of the non MLP vintage plush from back then also had them. It certainly was…a choice…that was made. I think it was an attempt at gold without using lamé. And I’ve definitely seen some peeled lamé items that ended up orange looking after everything has flakes off, so a small percentage might be that.

Thats really intresting, i totally think you are right. i think old plushies are so fun to look at, especially when they age in weird ways. I doubly love the mlp plushies for being so weird, so carpety, to stiff and structured and uncomfortable to hold. The 80s did not know hpw to make a plush children could sctually sleep with at night without getting a stiff neck.
