Hello! I’m very new here but I wanted to try making a little journal of my pony customs.

I just got started with this a month ago. For years I had been wanting to get into Monster High repaints and finally took the plunge this spring. Thanks to extensive background drawing and using Prismacolor oil pencils, I found myself immediately comfortable using the MSC and Derwent watercolor pencil methods typically used for MH repaints. As I’m absolutely garbage with paints, although I hadn’t seen anyone doing that with ponies, I couldn’t stop wanting to try it. Turns out it works pretty well!

My first girl is a G1 Skyflier I’m calling Persephone - still need to take final photos now she has her hair but it’s not styled yet. Here’s my progress so far:

Hope you like her! I’ll keep updating this thread with progress pics and new customs. Thanks for taking a look!

I can't seem to get pencil to show up like that on pony vinyl :/

I'm just blinking at my monitor in shock! What gorgeous art! You do that freehand?! LOVE her! Share the hair pix too, when you get a chance!!
Thank you!! :ponylove: I used a lot of photo references and vintage botanical plates for inspiration, but it was designed freestyle from those. I’ve never done well with planning so I just sketched it out on intuition.
Here’s a quick shot of her with hair:

(don’t mind the giant Totoro…)
I’m trying to decide if I wanna keep it straight or add a gentle wave curl to it. Greek artist depictions typically had curly hair so it seems appropriate.

I just checked, 4B marks well. An undercoat of MSC probably helps for the watercolor pencils sticking.
Don’t feel bad, it’s a common issue. I had been looking up stuff on repaints for years so I learned a lot before even trying. As Alstroemeria stated, the secret is always Mr. Super Clear - the ‘alternatives’ never cut it for anyone, you need that paper texture only MSC offers.

Now, if you did use MSC, it’s still not you. Using it even remotely outside of its diva-princess level conditions (65-80°F, 65% humidity MAX) you won’t get the results you need. I’m gonna have to put most of this on the shelf pretty soon for winter, actually. Probably until May…
W-O-W, WOW!!!! I hope I can make pony customs like this someday! This is so incredibly beautiful! I can’t wait to see her finished!
Thank you so much!! I see you’re starting a pony artist journey yourself. The tapir in your sig caught my eye because a very close friend (the one who kinda triggered my return to ponies in fact) is obsessed with tapirs. I had to show him immediately and now we’re both eager to see your stuff go live. Do you do sculpting modifications? I’ve started working with apoxie sculpt and so immediately my brain was imagining modding a pony into a little tapir!
Stunning!!!!
Wow... she looks lovely! Beautiful work!
Many thanks, everyone! I was admittedly a little nervous to customize vintage G1 ponies because, well, they’re not exactly easily replaceable, but I’m pretty happy with Persephone here and she’s given me a lot of confidence. Glad to see others like her, too!

That makes me so happy, I love finding other people who like tapirs as much as I do, they're my absolute favorite! Please give your friend a high five for me LOL!!
The first tapir pony is absolutely under way, I'm using a baby tiddly winks as a base because I think baby ponies already have the perfect short chubby proportions for a tapir! I didn't think there would be an audience for tapir ponies but maybe I'll have to make more than one!!!:lolpony:
(It means so much that y'all are interested in my work, thank you for saying so!!:ponylove::redheart:)

Wow! Absolutely outstanding work! I actually just started playing around with MSC and watercolor pencils on ponies, mainly for eyes, but I’m no where near what you’re doing!

I can’t understand how I’ve not commented on how beautiful and amazing this piece of art is even though I’m following the thread?!
You’ve done such an amazing job. I think my favourite part is the pinker nose compared to the rest of the face

Absolutely amazing and so neat!

Wow, the detail is just so beautifu!

Gorgeous! I find the pencil method works well, too! I love how intricate the designs can get when you use pencils! :ponylove:
