Hi! In the last month my G1 MLP collection has grown significantly. I noticed that some of them are very dirty…. their hair quality is almost beyond repair, and some are just in bad shape overall. One of the ponies that I bought looks like somebody tried to remove the head and ended up ripping the inner lining … I am wondering how I can repair that… I’m also trying to learn the best way to clean vintage G1 MLP’s without damaging them. Also, is it appropriate for me to re-hair pony’s and re paint or touch up on cutie marks??? Any tips and tricks regarding cleaning restoration etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks loves!

To start the My Little Pony Restoration Project is the best resource for restoring MLP’s. This is a collection of information that has been compiled over the years by many collectors with tried, tested and trusted methods.

As far as re-hairing (or re-rooting) a pony’s hair, it really depends on what your looking for. If it’s a pony you want to keep in you collection, I say go for it! If it’s a pony you are cleaning up and selling, then you may want to consider the value of said pony. A lot of buyers (collectors) prefer a pony in it’s original form and do the restoration work themselves. In general sense, most ponies don’t require to be re-rooted but just some work and tlc to rehydrate the hair fibres.

But overall, the biggest thing when you restore any pony (even cleaning/spa day) keep note of whose had what done to them and this can be passed along to anyone who may get the pony in the future. This is always important should something happen down the line a new home will know “hey I remember the person I bought from told me this so maybe that’s why it’s happening. Or this should be happening.”

Awesome info!!! Thank you so much! Espically keeping track of anything I do, is important. So glad you mentioned that! Thanks love

I just checked out the MLP restoration project and OMG it’s amazing. Thank you so much for sharing that with me!

I would also recommend taking your time and really considering what the pony needs before doing anything as drastic as rehairing or paint touch ups. Start with the most basic and gentlest cleaning techniques and move up from there. Often a pony that seems in really bad shape will look surprisingly good after just a wash and conditioning the hair. If not, it’s easy to try the next step up in restoration, but you can never go back to the original condition once the hair has been removed/paint added.
