How often do you wash your ponies?

Had a dust storm go through last night and everything has a nice thick layer of dirt and soot (from last year's fire) on it.

I get to spend most of my free time cleaning.

Wonderful.

Anyhow, that got me thinking - how often do you give your ponies a spa day? I usually dust mine two-three times a week, but it's rather half-hearted as I live out in high desert country and dust is just a fact of life.

Now that I think about it, my ponies probably haven't been washed since I was a kiddo, which is... concerning... :surprisepony: I'm actually very tidy in all other aspects, but my ponies say otherwise! They're going to be getting the full spa treatment this week.

I'd like to get a glass case for them someday, but for the time being I'm just grateful I finally got them a shelf. (They were in storage for 9 years.)

Probably less then I ought too.

I had a group from my childhood that had never been washed until last year lol.
Sorry you gotta do so much cleaning though :/

I brush mine at least once a month and dust the ones that aren’t enclosed. I check for any flaws. The ones inside my case get the brushing and look over, they just rarely need dusting in there. Probably helps that I’m so ocd about my house being clean, too. Less dust available to settle.

i havnt touched most of the ponies i owen lol *bad pony mama here, but im currently sorting and stuff, so atleast i can look at everybody that way*

The way I see it is, most that aren’t in the case are out of the sun and heat, high off the floor, and newer, so less likely to get the problems of the older generations. It’s our G4’s that my daughter picked up once or twice a week when she was 3. (We lived directly across from target and she was a very active kid, so we went out every day and sometimes target’s a/c was much better than a playground) the customs only really have value to me. I’m sure other people might like them, but they’d never want to buy them for what I paid and they are all very special to me. I talk to them lots. The other g1 ponies are just those who I really enjoy talking to and brushing. I did recently downsize, though. I also have a few mib/mip that only need the boxes checked occasionally. The better the environment you have them in, the less likely they are to develop issues. Only g1’s are really at much risk of the cancer, regains, and other issues just randomly popping up. Most of mine, I would keep even if they had a flaw. Therapy ponies. Psychologist approved. ;)

I do worry about my daughter’s. She likes the ss and didn’t leave room in the case. So hard to clean. I use a soft dry(never used for anything else) toothbrush to dust those more like weekly.

Wow, you guys are making me feel like a filthy monster LOL I give every pony a scrub and style when I get them then they go on the shelf to fend for themselves. I have some that probably haven't been dusted in several years :surprisepony: Just recently I tidied the shelves and they might be a little dusty but really it isn't that bad. I would like to do a major clean up and clean and restyle each one but it's quite the undertaking when you have over 600. Any volunteers?!?!

I would come clean your ponies gladly :) I get to organize my mom’s wall of fabric and buckets of yarn this week

My personal take is that ponies should be exposed to water as infrequently as possible--each time you do, you risk the growth of mold and tail rust. And each time you wash or scrub them, you risk the paint being worn away over time.

When I add a pony to my collection, I do a standard wash (never submerging unless the head is removed and the insides actually require cleaning), thoroughly dry, and put on a shelf in the pony room. That said though, I have an air filter and dehumidifier running 24-7, so once the ponies are in there, they don't need cleaning again.

Unless your ponies are regularly handled or played with, I'm not sure why they would need routine washing at all.

Just a dust wipe and some hair time. ;)

ugh I once washed them by shelf and it took weeks to get them all cleaned in thrown in pony spa makeovers. Dont get me started on how many bandanas I sewed like last week. It was crazy but im happy with the outcome ive been sheepish.. I havent shown any pictures. -_-

Very much what Jewel said. My ponies get a standard gentle clean using as few chemicals as possible (usually dish soap and conditioner and that’s it) when they first arrive, are thoroughly dried, and they go on the shelf. My pony room is kept closed at all times (we have two cats who are chewers), and I’m not in there for hours a day, every week, so they stay pretty clean.

I will say that when we moved in here 8 years ago and were building the new pony room, everyone did get a refresh clean and were photographed for my collection catalog before they went on the shelf, but for some of these ponies (early G3s), it had been 10 years or more since they were last washed. And then they were only a bit dusty.

I only wash my ponies if they need it as they’re in a box under my bed but my figures and shelf ponies do get a dusting now and then

If I want to style them, then their hair gets a wash so I can do it better but apart from that, they’re fine

If I get a new pony then yep, a wash for them unless brand new

Oh man… I used to wipe down the ponies I would get in the mail if they needed it — but that was like 15-20 years ago (wow, has it been THAT long?!). Now it seems the majority of ponies I get are much cleaner than some of the others I’ve had forever lol. I honestly do not remember the last time I cleaned any of them. (Actually the only ones I’ve cleaned probably in the last ten years have been those I was selling haha!)
