Is Pony Cancer Really Contagious?

Sorry, I know there have been a lot of threads like this. But could someone please clear this up for me? I've heard a lot of people say you should keep ponies with cancer away from other ponies, and other people say that pony cancer isn't contagious. So is it or isn't it?

hi

I really want to know to.
I have 2 ponies with cancer. :cry2:

No, no it's not.

Mold is though.

It's a kind of Mold that grows on the pony, there are a few types but cancer isn't spreadable. You can tell its pony cancer as the dot will normally be brown, and not darker in the centre.

The myth it's contagious is from people seeing spots and discoloration "spread" through a collection. But, seeing a collection of formerly fine ponies succumb to ailments means it's being stored poorly, not that one poor "contaminated" pony was a bringer of a plague. lol.

The WORST places to store these types of toys are places like a non-climate controlled garage, shed, attic that heats and cools to very extreme temps, or very humid or damp musty places that allow mold to grow. If you tightly seal in plastic, in addition to picking a bad storage spot trapped moisture will make these problems much worse. I've seen women cry when they've dug out a tub of childhood ponies from the garage or attic they wanted to show me. :( They were ones in now dreadful bait condition were originally stored in beautiful shape.

Best place is a dry, room temp space, away from pets, sunlight (causes fading to hair, paint and some body colours). If you have a lot of humidity, a dehumidifier is a worthwhile investment if you have a valuable collection. :)

Wait, if it's darker in the center it's mold?

Yes. I have a peachy that has pony Mold, not cancer. She sits downstairs by the computer.

useful to know!
Keep getting conflicting replies. It's obviously a tricky thing :(

Thanks.

I have only one G1 pony, Butterscotch. Yes, I'm kicking myself for not keeping the rest of my collection plus the carrying case and stable, but I was 11 when I got them so you know how it goes. I really wish I'd kept Bluebell and Snuzzle, though. I asked my hubby to get me those for Christmas:)

I have kept Butterscotch in a trunk all these years and she looks fine, I think. Her hair is a bit messy but her body doesn't have any weirdness growing on it. I used to have my trunk in my closet in Texas (only place to fit the trunk) and now that I live in Quebec the trunk is in the basement but in the carpeted area farthest from the pipes (which are in an enclosed room). I am thinking it might be better to bring the trunk up and stick it back in the bedroom closet because I have tons of childhood keepsakes in there I don't want to lose plus lots of books.

The trunk itself is like a camp trunk, it has that wood "lining" and has held up great for the past 20 or so years I have had it. Before this trunk I had another trunk but I can't remember why I changed it and got a new one.

I have some Charmkins that have been in a baggie inside a tin inside the trunk. Things in there are inside other things like shoeboxes and whatnot.

So far I haven't noticed any damage. My husband has a massive (MASSIVE!) collection of Star Wars figures (a good 200 or more 12 inch unboxed and probably 200 in original packaging) in the basement in plastic bins. Probably not the best idea but I have no idea how to store them, there are so many.
