Okay, I'm moving on to my third custom project, and she's "required" to have a red body.

I was just reading on the customization project site that rit dye eventually fades down the road. With that said, should I go the way I did the previous two and paint the base color on? I had a bit of a time with the one I made for the little girl as a thank you gift (G1 base), but no problem with Orange Warrior (G3 base). This next one will be a G1 base, but she was a 1990 secret pocket pony, so she's fairly large and rigid, which I'm liking for this new project already. I'm planning a lot of intricate detail work as I'm going to try and stretch my talents here, more than the last two combined, but I don't want to even think about re-dying her down the road if she comes out the way I want her to... yet, I don't want to spend a lot of time painting a red base coat on her if I don't have to.

What would you guys and gals do in my shoes? :worthy:

Personally, I would use an airbrush to spray her with many light coats of red, then seal her with a clear coat. (Hi, btw. :) )

Dye does tend to fade, I've found, and can also stain other ponies, shelves, etc.

Painting by hand is tedious, and as you stated, takes a lot of time.

If you don't have an air compressor, you can use cans of propellant by Testor's.

Good luck!

I have a lot of trouble with bright reds. I find that even the acrylic paints with red will leach and bleed. I've had several bleed so badly that the pony and the other paints I put on her were damaged. I think Rit Dye would be just as bad. I think if I were to make a red pony again, I would use an oil based spray paint or an enamel with a clear coat ( matte or shiny)

I had a lot of trouble with oils; then again, I'm not as experienced with them. If you seal the pony with a clear coat sealant, the acrylics won't bleed. :) At least, so far, with the products I've used over several years.
