Dun dun DUN!!!
I feel like the bronies are winning a battle. Taking over the MLP community and reshaping it from a tight-knit group of vintage toy collectors to a wide-spread meme fanbase.

Hmm... Coming from more male-oriented fandoms like Sonic the Hedgehog and Transformers, I can say I don't think that's the case at all.
IMO, what's happening with bronies has absolutely nothing to do with the older community, rather it's its own faction within the fandom of a specific franchise. It's just that Hasbro suddenly realized that with MLP appealing to a male crowd as well, they have a freaking juggernaut on their hands. It's not exactly the first time it happens: for example, Hasbro had never really thought about the importance of actual "characters" until they saw the backlash they got over Optimus Prime's death in the Transformers movie. Ever since then, they've put a lot more thought into their toys as characters that kids can relate to, especially in the fiction accompanying them, and you can see that even in the MLP franchise (Tales, anyone?). Because, as healthy companies do, Hasbro is flexible enough to take business opportunities when they see them.
So bottom line, I don't think the community should feel any sort of threat coming from the bronies's side. If Transformers fandom has taught me anything, it's that multiple emerging factions of a community can coexist and still keep a franchise going. And trust me, as annoying as some bronies are, in general they've got nothing on the sheer obnoxiousness and extremism I've seen floating around the TF or even the Sonic fandom. If the older community is as tightly woven as it appears, it's not a new faction of the MLP fandom that's going to bring it down. I think Jewel's right on the money about this.
...Sorry about the lengthy essay, by the way...
I have literally no words that can possibly get across my sense of absolute disgust at this attitue and total and utter surprise.
