getting an associates degree and a bachelors at the same time. unrelated fields.
1 is a walk in the park, 10 is Anguish Unimaginable. thoughts?

Depends on the rigor of the schools I would say.

i was going to do vet tech and art, since 1) art is such an unpredictable industry so it'll be nice to have something to fall back on, 2) i want to own an animal sanctuary someday and 3) i want to do (some) scientific illustrations and a background in animal anatomy will definitely give me an edge there. thank you guys for the encouragement though!!

Speaking as a vet tech of many, many years (17years) DO NOT get into this field unless you like to be belittled, berated, called names, be told you don’t care, death threats, taken advantage of and extremely underpaid (and many other things).

There’s a reason our industry (veterinary and animal/zoo’s) has the highest rates of mental health related issues and sadly deaths.

If you are truly interested in animal welfare and health get into biology and into research and environmental sciences.

The pet industry is no place for anyone who values their mental health. I have officially retired from a career I used to love but the industry destroyed that.

The industry of people who want to own pets and can’t afford them, add in pet insurance and prices go up… it’s a sad sad state.

so just like the fine art community! yeah, this'll be perfect, i'll fit right in!
joking but seriously thank you for the heads up... there's a fisheries and wildlife biology course as well that i might look into, but there's no associate's degree for that so i'll have to double major. i still have like... slightly under two years so i'll be able to chew on it for a bit. i've been thinking about farming (specifically algae) so that might be relevant.

I think Sarah Keefer has a degree in Wildlife Biology or similar and does nature illustrations. Not sure if she actually has an art degree or is just naturally talented. Most animal related industries seem similar in the underpaid/overworked category. They seem to be ones people always say that you do it for the love of the animals, not the money.

i plan on mostly doing freelance illustrations between comics so i'll probably be underpaid and overworked regardless of what i choose. i must have a type lol. i just want to have some kind of backup career in something that's like... necessary. even if i won't be a high-roller, i'll have *some* kind of job to keep me on my feet.
as much as i love galleries, it's so hard to thrive (or even just survive) in that sphere. it'll just have to be something i do in between work i suppose.
