I was sorting through some unsorted Ponies and found all four G3 Divine Shine in the tub are tacky and sticky. I'm not judging them, whatever they get up to in the tub is their business and if they like to roll around in ice cream that's fine. They're adults. It's their choice and their bodies.

But I need them to be clean. Because they feel gross.

I've never had much luck with just soap and water. What's your favorite method to clean up these sticky-icky nasty girls?

And why does it seem that Divine Shine are just prone to this? Think it's something in the glitter/plastic mix? Enlighten me with knowledge!

I have two divine shine ponies and this has never happened to them before and somehow still glittery but I’m worried about cleaning out their body rust (you can see it as clear as day) in case it triggers something. I know how those ones can be but I don’t want them suddenly self-cannibalising on their glitter

I’ve had one sticky pony though which was Strawberry Reef for some reason. All I did was clean her with soap and water and it hasn’t come back yet. I still have no idea what it was

It’s their plasticizers leaking sadly. You can try using a product like goo gone but until they’re finished weeping you’ll continue to have sticky icky pony.

I have a Lemon Drop & a Lady Lovely Locks going through this right now. I know some people have used baby or talcum powder to absorb it but then you still have to wash periodically. I just keep them separate until the day they can rejoin the other pretties in my collection. :)

Wash with soap and water and store with silica gel packets or DampRid. Like Skybreeze said, it's chemical leakage, and it will just keep going until it's all come out. The Divine Shine ponies are notorious for this problem because of their transparent plastic.

I use dawn and a toothbrush, but yeah, the issue is most likely what everyone said above about the leakage :(
I like the Divine Shine Ponies a lot(Or the concept, at least), but the dissolving glitter and transparent plastic is so problematic. It's funny because it seems like the glitter Fakies are made better than Hasbro's official ponies. (I love those glitter Fakies :ponylove: )

As I suspected. But I didn't know that it might some day STOP! Has anyone got a pony that used to leak and now doesn't?

While I don't have a pony who stopping 'weeping', I do have a Troll who did. I bought new new as a kid and about ten years later he became a sticky mess. I cleaned him and cleaned him and started to give up, but about a year ago it just stopped and he dried out. I'm grateful, because Id had him forever and I have a lot of nostalgia connected to him.

I thank you all for the insights! My step daughter is a chemist and today she gave me a detailed (borrrrrrrring) explanation of the process and why the semi-transparent plastic and glitter combo is a recipe for disaster. Heh. She went into so much detail it was hilarious. My brain started to melt.

In any case she did actually suggest an interesting remedy... Scrubbing the ponies with denture cleaning tablets. She suggested a take the one I like the least and even using a denture cleaner/peroxide mixture! She gave me a chemical reason why it might work more efficiently, but of course I can't repeat it, I barely speak English some days. Apparently the reaction between the two items might make the weeping stop quicker. I'm willing to try.

I've chosen my victim and I'm gonna dust her in cornstarch to tamp it down and start dousing her in the various cleaners suggested here and from my kiddo. We'll see what method reigns supreme!

Isn't that funny? None of my glitter fakies have ever leaked either, nor have they faded like the Hasbros. Funny that the fakies are actually better quality in this case!

Yes, I have had a pony stop with the leaking but it took a while and when it did finally seem to stop she wasn't as easy to squeeze, was a harder plastic. I would just periodically clean and I put a small square of wax paper under her just so she didn't goo the shelf she was on and I tried to keep a little space between her and the other ponies displayed.

That makes so much sense! I have tmj and a tendency to grind my teeth so I have this lovely occlusial guard to wear at night. It keeps my jaw from locking up. It's made of a non plastic polymer since I'm allergic and I have to use a denture solution and brush to clean it. It works so well. I never considered using it on a pony. :eek:o_O

Seems like she suggested it once before a long time ago when I was scrubbing a pitted pony and she was visiting for a holiday. I meant to follow up and experiment but never did. This time I'm gonna git 'er done.

As soon as I get to the store. In a few days. Or weeks if it gets scary out there. LOL

Maybe they like feeling sticky?

You could just leave them sticky.
Otherwise my best guest is gently wash them with very mild soap by hand in luke warm water.

I'm very curious to find out how it works. I hope it doesn't do anything to their coloring...

My G3 Divine Shine ponies and G2 Queen Sunsparkle and Hip Holly have this. It is icky, especially when their hair gets in it. I should try braiding it.
I would be interested to see how your experiment goes. Odd that the G1 Sparkle and Glow 'n Shows don't do this. I have a Lemon Drop and Peachy I got from the same seller and they are sticky. Lemon Drop is mainly just where her "saddle sores" are from wearing her tack for a couple decades. Peachy is just her head, body is fine. The Twinkles cat that came with her though is also all sticky and the paint is rubbing off with it.

Did your daughter say what starts this process since not all seem to have it?

It's probably a complete crapshoot both from initial batch variance with the plasticizer when it was added in the factory all those years ago, batch variance in the plastic itself, and the variance in temperatures and conditions the ponies have experienced over the years.

Well, it makes sense that she was harder - it's the plasticizer that makes them soft and squeezable.

She indicated it was probably a combination of heat, poor storage and potential biocide brought about by microorganisms attacking the plastics. She suggested the last component comes into play with the idea that children take toys through a multitude of environments that contain possible contaminants. She actually talked about potentially taking one of the affected toys and trying to figure out what type pf plastic was involved so she'd know what polymer stabilizer was used.

My kiddo is literally going to dissect one of my ponies! LOL

I've had to deal woth some and marinate pony in peroxide/water solution, sealed container for 1-2 weeks.

I think it slows the sticky but I'm not sure if it comes back later on. I think it does. So you'd want to keep an eye on it

I still have the one I got when she first come out and she never got Sticky I have Flower Garland so I don't now how to fix it since I have never had the problem I have had her for 14 years and she is still nice the only problem I had was her hair was fizzy when I first took her out of the box but I have fix it now and I'm amazed that she is In Such good condition

Now I have plenty of ponies to experiment on! I sorted my fakies and discovered that a huge portion of my Remco fakies 13 of them! They appear to all be from Jaru Toys) are tacky, plus two actual Remcos. Also tacky are a Cabbage Patch Fakie, 3 Chap Mei and a Kid Kore.

Not only this, I discovered I had tackiness in all of my Minty and Shenanigans Ponyville Happy Meal toys. None of the other figs in the set, jut Minty and Shenanigans, 11 figs total. And these are hard plastic versus the soft plastics of the fakies and Divine Shine.

Considering the tubs of fakies were in a metal shed during part of Texas summer, heat is probably a major component with their deterioration, but the McDonalds toys have always been inside in the A/C. I'm curious if Jess can determine causation and possible cures. I will make her regret offering her aid! Bwahahaha!
