Takara Pony 3D models

Your sketches are so cuuuuute! I'm melting!

Okay so ~ takara ponies update
So little takara is nooooot completely done only because I struggle with boolean meshes & im trying to combine the nose, head, and body with the separate little meshes I made for them so that they can fit together snugly. But she's CLOSE to being done, I think, in terms of sculpting. Unless I completely redo her for the third time.
takarav3orsomething.PNG

this is the first draft of big!takara! AKA full BJD anthro takara pony. I have not refined or sculpted anything yet. I learned a lot from doing the little one so this one went way faster and cleaner so far, although I didn't really use much reference so I'm not sure if its less similar, but I think that's okay. I'm getting pretty far from the og takara concept with this lol.

SO, speaking of getting away from the takara concept, I was wondering if anyone wanted to give input into wings and horns :0
For both the big takaras BJD and the little 3D model I want to have a set of wings and horns to play with. I was in the mood to model fun stuff and I ended up making a few different sets of wings and two horns. Note that the wings aren't "smoothed"/ "sculpted" so they're not finalized but I think its clear what I'm going for with each set
This set is g1 My Little Pony wings + horn; generally more detailed than takara dolls. Might match the BJD body better than the little takara, the little takara would have smaller ones but same shape.
takarawingshorn1.PNG

takarawingshorn3.PNG

This second one is a simpler horns and simpler wings but I tried to give the wings more of a proper wing shape. I don't love how vaguely shaped the g1 pony wings are, but the wings /do/ need to stay simple so I tried to give them the /\ of a birds bones very loosely. The wings remind me of an ice cream cone. The horn is the super simple type, more like on a tokidoki unicorn. I think that this matches better than the spiral one tbh.

"I like my wings to have shape" I say, as I make the most chibi, shapeless wings ever to exist. Oh well, at least they're cute:

Anyways feel free to give feedback on the wings/horn designs here ~ I'll try to get pics of some of them with the normal takara model, but I ended up modeling them all in the BJD takara file (note to self: fix the bloat on the takara file, I have way too many copies of each 3D model piece and the program keeps crashing)

The Tokidoki style horn looks perfect to the Takara style! At first I thought the first set of wings looked good but something didn’t feel totally right then I saw the final set of wings and those look like a much better fit!

You’re doing a really good job so far :Flutter4:

This is such a cool project!! can’t wait to see the result! <3
I also happen to have a 3D printer (FDM), so I’d absolutely love to play around with the files if you ever decide to distribute/sell them!

Also- love the wings and horn additions!! As for wing suggestions, how about the G3/G3.5 wing style? They’re not entirely G1 style, but I think they’d look cute on the Takara!

Oh I JUST realized I never replied to this post and I meant to!
I REALLY like that first wing design in particular. It kind of feels like a combination of what I was going for in two of the wings. I'm always fond of the little swirls. The second one actually might match the /takaras/ better though because of the lack of detail. I'll play around with them in 3D and see what I can come up with.
When I was looking up the 3/3.5 ponies I found this, which is like a combination of the above two that is simple but maintains some detail, so maybe this? (Also I don't know much about those generations but I looking at them im like theyre so cute...)

Now that I'm *almost* done with my halloween project im moving back to the takara project, so I'll post an update soon!

I absolutely love this, totally adorable!

@Prince-Aei may be able to give some good advice / input!

i’m also experienced with both filament and resin printing and could help you out with the files, tinkering and test printing!

Hi! I'm planning on providing the files to anyone who's interested in testing them, I'd love the help with some of the fiddlier bits of that process! I don't have a 3D printer myself but I might have mentioned I was going to try and get them printed somewhere like the library near me which has a filament printer and you pay just for materials- but I have no idea how much they would be willing to help with making the blender file print-able.
Besides that, I'm also not super confident with the joints, because I dont know how much "room" each ball and socket needs! I've also haven't been sculpting to size, which I think doesn't matter cosmetically but when it comes to the ball and sockets, I'm not measuring out the distance between the ball and sockets... which might bite me in the butt when it comes to printing these, especially because blender doesnt have collision so I can't tell if they're clipping through the sockets when I move them around (actually maybe blender has a collision feature that i dont know how to turn on)

Takara update!~

I finally had a different project to avoid... I mean, time to work on takara ponies...

pinkie 1-2.png

Yeah, I completely redid the takara for like the fourth time! But I think she looks... alright... right now. Separate nose, eyes, cut outs in the legs and sockets in the body, although I haven't "hollowed" the body other than adding the sockets. My understanding is that most resin/filament print machines automatically add walls to an object, so I don't want to make redundant shapes by making an inside layer. Some section would probably need to be more solid than others though, and I don't know how I'd indicate that for people. A rod needs to be placed across the opening of the ball joint in the legs/arms, so that would have to be drilled. and should probably be thicker. Like I mentioned in the previous post, I don't know if the room given in the joints, eyes, or nose will allow them to fit together. The final nose and eyes just might have to be glued? I gave them a simple hole-and-post style for now.
I'm still not 100% on the placement of the leg "half moon cut"- Usually the cut is head on to the viewer but togive the body that very round shape the legs need to bend outwards (as in the original takara):
pinkiesits1-2.png

The body is a little more compact than the original takara in particular, but even so, I tried to move the leg sockets around to give a better range of motion, and I worried that I was making the crotch area too thin, because then the whole body would be like... mostly hole at the bottom. I also assume the og one has a hole for the tail, which isn't included in the current version but would be one of the easiest things to add. And I did just realize I forgot the hole for the nose part, but that is also not hard to add.
takarahairless1-2.png
pinkiesits1otherside-2.png

The below stringing plan is based on the one Dollightful provided for her bunny doll. This is assuming a couple of simple holes are added, through the nose and neck joint primarily, so elastic can go through. Since the area where the neck hold would be is smaller than the nose hole, a metal ring could be inserted through there before the white part of the nose is pushed on (assuming it stays on by itself, maybe magnets or glue would be needed). I would prefer to have the elastic between the legs loop up through the head because I've had issues doing a single-elastic stringing like below for my own dolls.
takaradollstringing.png

I also made the simple models for the horn and wings! They don't have a method of attaching right now, they'd just be printed with the body or head. For the horn I could potentially make it a little plug like the eyes, which would be stylistically more similar to the original takaras, but I also think that's more inconvenient for people printing them? And I assume the wings should also just be a part of the body for that reason.

Anyways that's where I am at this project now! I guess let me know if you all have any suggestions for now, I'll try and figure out how to share the file so other people can play with it. S/o to the many youtubers that taught me to make hair, I was doing so for another project but I thought it would look nice to show pinkie with some hair to get a better vision of a complete doll
pinkie 1.png

Inside view of the joints rn, the arm holes seem to have more space between them in the socket but the legs are also smaller than their sockets, they're just pushed up a little:

Whew, now I guess I need to work on other stuff for a bit now... but at least I finally made prograss on this!

This is looking amazing!

Your library should help with that I think, if they have a printer they should have the software to turn STLs and OBJs into a format for their printer.

The balls and sockets look pretty good to me at a glance!

I’ve found google drive the easiest for file sharing!

Okay so!
I finally compiled things into a presentable file I can share with everyone here- I've never shared something like this so hopefully it works, I tested it in a private window and it downloaded fine.

This is just a .blender file, I don't know what the preferred type of filesharing is for these sorts of projects so I didn't convert it. I also left two versions of the pony in the file, the "un-subdivided" one and the one with all modifiers applied. In any case I learned how to sculpt based off game tutorials which place an emphasis on less polygons so I dunno, maybe the print needs even more polygons to come out smooth? *shrug* But for anyone with experience modifying files I wanted to leave more room to work.

One of the reasons I got distracted was I just wanted to 3D sculpt other things after making big takara. The file link includes the baby takara model just for fun, even though I know fakies are more widely available (in both poses, too). The baby takara is also just two pieces instead of the nine pieces that the big takara is (the decorations on the face are just cosmetic, I put them there to give myself an idea of how they'd look). The wings/horns are also in the above file but they aren't combined with the meshes, sorry, I wasn't sure how I wanted to do that yet.

takaraprev.png

I fully got distracted from compiling these files by the worst possible impulse which was to recreate all the not-specifically-pony items and friend characters directly from the catalog:

distractedpng.PNG

I doubt anyone will want these or that I'll be able to print them given my limited printing options and most of it isn't done so that's why I took so long separating out everything from the copy of the file for sharing (I'm also suffering from large files because I'm bad at deleting stuff lol)

Anyways if anybody tests it out let me know if the link works and if the models are use-able for 3D printing. Although I know my library has its 3D printing thing im probably not going to do it soon since I'm super busy for the next couple weeks (hence: takara-pony-model-procrastination).

I got a little distracted this week and also my wrists have been hurting, so I haven't been working on the 3D model. But I thought yall might be interested in the /extension/ of this project because i need to make every project into 3 projects.
Remember how I said it would be funny if I made a takara 3D model with ALL the joints? uh yeah so i sketched it
View attachment 79799
and I liked it so much this is gonna be like the part 2 of the project.

View attachment 79800
View attachment 79801
also the reason my wrist hurts is probably because i drew all of these
Anyways yeah I really love anthro dolls and I really liked the idea of making takaras with more anthro-ish bodies. Hopefully pony purists wont think im warping the spirit of the original takaras or anything, and this counts as on topic for the thread. I also want to model little horns and wings on both the bigger models and the original (hopefully thats not blasphemy, i think it would look really cute!)

i ended up remodeling her and shes looking okay, although i need to adjust the nosebridge a bit (and finish the joints). 3D modeling from a character reference while trying to be accurate is hard. I ended up avoiding references for the most recent bit of fiddling with the model, trying to make it just look nice on its own ; I also had to make the cut at the neck and that caused me to thin the body out (the neck hole needs to be exactly round so the head can turn); looks like i should round out the body more, or else maybe the head should be smaller? And from the additional references above, i maybe should have made the ears bigger. I think i may have made the head too domed and the nose too far out, if i reduce that size a bit it may look closer to the original.

Listen, this may be because I’m someone who got into MLP long after being in the Furry community for years. But! These Anthro dolls look, so very precious! They remind me of Magic Mixlings a little! I utterly adore them! One of the reasons I really enjoy Takara ponies is because they are like little Sylvanian families / tiny fashion dolls but a cute pony instead! :O so you’ve really nailed that here! The artwork for them too is just so perfect! I always felt like G4 Rarity would translate really perfectly to these as well! Our own little fashionista! I’ve only drawn Takara Ponies once (I created this for the ThankYou page of the UK PonyCon con book! I always try to diversify the pony gens seen in the conventions materials!) I really need to draw them more as I didn’t quite get the look down! It’s really nice to find more people talking about them who know what they are, I don’t have any good advice for your project aside from:
Keep going! I really want to see these!
I hope one day to own some kind of Takara style pony, no matter if it’s original or not! I’d love to see more of this fashion Anthro pony idea come into MLP from fans and honestly? Hasbro!
IMG_0652.png

Here’s that artwork I mentioned ^ Wish I’d had this resource at the time as Google images is only so helpful to find photos of them! I guess, when I next attempt to draw them? I know where to look for references! :lolpony::lolpony::lolpony::lolpony:

Thank you for the kind words! And nice little takara banner! I only just learned of these like last month right before I created this thread- I didn't really know how rare/uncommon they were until I started looking around into collectors forums and stuff. I had tried to create a calico critter sized BJD a while back so it felt like a good challenge.
A lot of my experience in the MLP fandom overlapped with furries, and I really love anthro characters and when I started watching doll repaint videos I was disappointed that there aren't that many official doll lines that are anthro. I like Pinkie Cooper for example but that never took off unfortunately! And the Equestria girls line just... never held up. I mean, they're hardly anthro anyways but that's about as close as Hasbro has tried and it doesn't seem to have worked as a fashion doll or an MLP line.
I think the mixlings are really cute in appearance but I do wish we had more dolls like that with more moving parts, rather than being just a big plastic figure. They're kind of like neopets or littlest pet shop, but larger, and I wish they had poseable arms. At least LPS had clothes and accessories sometimes which it doesn't feel like the mixlings have? I dunno, doing research for the takaras led me to the Tomy brand "Tea Bunnies", and I realized I had one as a kid and it's exactly what I wish was on the market nowadays, but also a larger figure with more poseability and joints would be nice! So uh... if I can't find exactly what I want I guess I'm just 3D modeling it myself >3

Oh wow I’m really happy you’re sharing the file for these guys ;w; They look so lovely and cute and I think I would love to try printing them sometime (I might be able to get access to my library’s 3d printer for example….) I know you said you haven’t had the opportunity to fully test them all but it’d be fun to try! If anyone does print these, would it be okay to take pictures of the printed takaras and then link back to this post to credit you/share where the files were from?

Yes! Please print/share as you want, just list credit! I'd love to see!

Wowowow I saw your takara art on tumblr by chance, but didn't realize you were 3d modelling them!!! Your work on this is amazing, I don't know how 3D printing itself works but your models look incredible. I hope that if anyone tries this, they share the results. I feel that a lot of people would be interested in owning a takara this way, since they are so rare!! thanks for sharing!

I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve been playing around with the file and converted the baby Takara file to test print it before jumping into the bigger Takara— so far it sliced super well and is currently being printed! I’ll keep everyone updated on the final print— It’s currently being printed at 135% in PLA so it’s a little bigger than the imported size, and I added tree supports just to be safe, maybe I’ll print without supports later to see if it can be done :>

All printed and started on painting!

If anyone plans on printing them, I’d recommend to make the body have more infill than the head, I fitted them and while it fit perfectly (2nd pic), it couldn’t stand upright as a whole. I’ll try adding a thick tail and hot glue to add more weight, but just putting it out there since the whole thing is a little top heavy.
Other than that, it’s a perfect model! Printed beautifully with no issues <3
Gyroid infill at 5%, white PLA at 0.12 layer height.

EDIT: Welcome to the world, Baby Pinky!
I still don’t know how to add hair to her head, if I should reroot her normally (making little holes on her head for it) or if I should make large holes and use large hair plugs. Maybe I should’ve attempted to print the head hollow.
But she’s almost done! She’ll be sealed tomorrow and hopefully I’ll order some needles to reroot her.

All printed and started on painting!

If anyone plans on printing them, I’d recommend to make the body have more infill than the head, I fitted them and while it fit perfectly (2nd pic), it couldn’t stand upright as a whole. I’ll try adding a thick tail and hot glue to add more weight, but just putting it out there since the whole thing is a little top heavy.

omg!! I'm so happy she worked out so far! Thank you for being the first experiment-er, sorry she is a little top heavy and hopefully you can lean her against a wall? Also is the neck hole loose and just held on by gravity or does it stick on tight enough to stay with friction?
The hair is kind of a can kicked down the road with this whole project. I've been aware that it will need some adjustment on the fly when printed but I've never actually printed anything in PLA so I wasn't sure what was plausible. In my head I was thinking to painstakingly hand-drill holes and try to root it very carefully (I've never rooted anything before either); I was worried PLA was too brittle to dremel at that scale.
Let us know how it goes!

No need to apologize! I’ll probably make a second print with different infill settings to confirm, but I’m pretty sure that’ll fix it. That said, adding a tail made her more balanced, so that’s also another fix.
As for the neck hole, it is held down by gravity, but I think I might have some PVC pipe small enough to make a plug a la G4 pony. That, or maybe just elongating the plug a little should do it? If push comes to shove though, I’ll just glue it down.
As for the hair, I’ve had success making a hole for the tail with a heated fork and a hot glue gun’s tip. PLA’s a thermoplastic, so its easy to manipulate it and make holes with something hot enough. I’ve been thinking of using a large needle over a flame to make rooting holes, which might work, I’ll just need some patience for that. Drilling I’ve only seen as an option for resin printed items since resin prints seem sturdy enough (I actually found a rooting tutorial for 3D prints that was meant for resin prints!) but it could be worth a shot if the head has a high infill %
That said, I might go to the makerspace later this week and do a drill test.
Thank you for working on such an awesome project! I’m really looking forward to play around with the bigger Takara model soon ^w^
