I'd way rather the kids have actual classes like music, art and sex ed and leave sports to just a recess or gym class. I was in sports (track and soccer) myself, but I did it to up my chances at scholarships. I really garnered nothing from them otherwise. Sure you learn teamwork, but you can learn teamwork in science class working an experiment in a group. Sports single out certain kids to become popular not for talent or personality but for their place on a team. Football players don't even have to win, they just have to have that jersey. Schools love them because football generates money: ticket sales, t-shirt sales and grants from the government. Cha ching!
But I'm not bitter or anything.
It isn't the pain! I was just telling my friend that. It's the loss of mobility and potential loss of independence. That's scary. I appreciate that my son is willing to stay here on the farm and help me, but he has a life. One day he might want to leave! I HAVE to get back on my feet and work. I HAVE TO.
It makes me mad that health care is at such a premium when we have money to send to countries that hate us. I think we should have at least the beginnings of socialized medicine and if people want to opt out, fine. But we're a rich country. People should at least get elementary health care without having to go hungry to do it.
True story, my friend was dying of cancer and his emergency medicare (or medicaid, I dunno which) ran out. They wanted to kick him out of the hospital while he was DYING. A church had to come in and promise to help pay his bill. I mean, what kind of monsters throw out a dying man? A hospital that cares about profit over patients. Disgusting. I still get so mad. I'm just glad he was too far gone to know what was happening. We just cried and cried. I'll forever be grateful to the kid people who rushed in to help.
