Hey all, sorry to bother you with this, but I thought maybe I could find some help and support here.

My cat, Mitzy, has gone missing today. We looked everywhere, tried to lure her with food, and nothing. It was the weirdest thing, too, because we live on a 2nd floor apartment and I could swear she was inside when I closed the door to the balcony. So I really have no idea whether I'm remembering things wrong or if she just went missing from inside the house (which would be impossible, right?). Though it wouldn't be the first time she fell from our balcony...
Anyway, me and my mom already tried going around the blocks next to our house, but we couldn't find her. It doesn't help that it was already night, and if she did indeed fall from the balcony, it's entirely possible that she went into some of our neighbor's front and backyards and hid somewhere, but we of course can't enter them to check.

Of course now the mood in the house is gloomy as all heck (I was planning on setting up Christmas decorations tomorrow, needless to say that plan is now on hold), and I'm clueless as to what to do, and how fast should I act. Should I start posting fliers and asking people info immediately? Should I try looking for her during the day before I do that? I probably wouldn't be as worried if it was summer, or if it wasn't so cold out... I also read about contacting animal shelters and setting humane traps, which seem like an awesome idea, but we don't have either around here, as far as I know...

All things considered, so far I'm taking this pretty well, but I'm still feeling worried and helpless. Especially since like I said, as far as I can tell, there was no way she could leave the house. Unless, of course, I'm remembering the order of events wrong...

Does anyone have any words of advice? I would be ever so grateful...

Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry your kitty is missing. I have three of my own and I would feel awful if one of mine became lost. My advice would be to call any vets close to you and let them know your kitty is missing since you said you don't have any human societies close by. Make sure to describe her in detail and give them your name and number. I would look for her during the daytime before putting up flyers, but if you can't find her then start putting up flyers and asking around. If you can put a pic of her on the flyers and/or take a pic with you when asking around (like if your phone has pics of Mitzy) it would be ideal. I've never lost a kitty yet, but that's what I would do. I hope you find her soon. Please keep us updated.

It's never too soon to start posting signs asking for help! And as Star Flare says, a photograph is invaluable aid to those who will be looking. Time is of the essence when a pet strays. Quite often they get lost, or picked up by well meaning people, so you'll need to get the word out quickly. Call any type of animal control office, animal shelter or vet nearby. They will be able to help you in your search, and will survey animals coming in to watch for her.
Don't hesitate to ask your nearby neighbours if they'd seen her, and tell them how she might have fallen into their areas, most be will glad to look, or allow you to search the area. She's unlikely to leave immediately unless she's in heat and looking for love (wink). Typically house cats stick very close to home, but can seem invisible because of their talents at hiding.
Don't fear, cats can be lost for even long periods then suddenly return home. We had one come home after we think see was cat-napped after 6 months! Her not answering your calls is sadly feline behaviour. They like to play little games, but hopefully she'll tire of her game and come to you soon!
All the best, I hope Mitzy is home even as I type this.

Put signs around where you live, check with your neighbors and see if they have seen her around, or maybe you could check your local animal shelter. I'm so sorry about your kitty :(. Hope this helps.

Im so sorry about Mitzy, maybe try what the others said, Put signs and ask people if they have seen her. Or ask a vet or your neighbors

I want to add that every time I've gone out to do a search for a lost cat (I work in animal rescue, so I'm out chasing kitties a lot), they almost invariably end up being found in little outbuildings like shed or garages. They're usually hiding in the warmest spot, waiting for their owners. Maybe there's little cubbies around Mitzy could be secreted in?

You chase kitties around?!
If they are looking for volunteers, sign me up! XD

I chase all kinds of critters around. Right now we're getting calls about snakes in people's houses. They're looking for warm places to winter. :D

=( Any luck? We live OUT in the country and we had lost one of our cats last year, she returned home after a MONTH! We assume a neighbor took her in (assuming she was a tame stray?) however she escaped and showed up back home.
So happy to have her back. I wish you the best of luck. Posting signs and asking your neighbors is never "too soon".....(.especially if you have already tried opening a can with the can opener.....or her favorite treat...to lure her out of close hiding)

Nevermind.... ^^'

Cats returning after a month? Talk about dogs getting lost and came back after a week after staying the whole week in the park!

I'm sorry to hear your cat is missing! :( I know that my mother and I would freak out if our cat got lost. I hope you find her quickly!

You should probably check around the inside of the house as well. I've had sick cats that have disappeared completely, and we never open any doors or windows. Try looking under and behind beds, cabinets, furniture, and even in corners and tight spaces that seem closed off. Especially if there's a lot of junk piled up somewhere that's undisturbed. If there are openings at the back of cupboards or under sofas then you should check inside those as well, and on top of high shelves and cupboards if there's climbing access to them. They can get in anywhere if they feel the need to hide (and fit perfectly... because cats are, of course, a liquid). If she doesn't come out by herself within about 24 hours, then she probably isn't in the house. You should probably check with the neighbours simultaneously just in case. Hopefully she's hiding somewhere close by. If you aren't able to find her within a few days, then all you can do is wait and hope that she comes back – cats are far better than dogs at finding their way home.

So sorry to hear that :(
The faster you get the word out about your missing cat the better. If you can't find it in the house just call any local vet etc. like guys above have already said. And put flyers with picture. Does your kitty has microchip so vet can check it? That little thing is really is a miracle sometimes. My dog went missing one time (from our yard I guess he jumped off). Someone caught him and did take to a vet because he was limping (nothing serious he had surgery year ago and still was little bit limping because of that). And with that microchip we got it him home :).
I wish you the very best luck finding your lost kitty! I keep my fingers cross!

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS. You're not going to believe this.

First of all, thank you so much for all your help and kind words. I'm almost embarrassed to come and say this...

We found Mitzy at around 3 a.m.. Me and my brother started hearing faint scratching noises, so he went to check where they were coming from... And we couldn't believe where she was.
She was inside a drawer. Specifically, a drawer inside my closet, which we inspected multiple times. A FREAKING DRAWER. Of course we couldn't find her, nobody even thought to check a freaking drawer! *facepalm*

Seriously, this has got to be both the worst AND best prank she's ever pulled on us. Now that it's over, it's all pretty hilarious, not to mention the story we have to tell our friends now, but HOLY FRAK the ordeal she put us through yesterday. SIGH. Cats, amirite...?

Also, thanks to this whole thing and your advice, if she ever does fall from the balcony again (knock on wood), I'll have a much clearer idea of what to do, so hey, it wasn't all for nothing! :p

Again, thank you all so much for everything! *hugs to all*
