Visiting my mum for a couple days and I woke up this morning to a text from my partner.
The Christmas tree fell over. (Most likely cat related) The Christmas tree that was full of our combined Family ornaments. Old glass balls from our childhoods.
He figures over 50% are shattered.
I could puke from the thought of it.
Then my wonderful mother disappears and reappears with a bin full of them. She didn't use them this year and doesn't plan to in the future.
It doesn't help with the loss of his side of ornaments, but it helps for me.

I am sad by the loss for both of us, but he and the cats were not hurt. We will have the tree decorated for Christmas with the kiddoes.

And most of all....he has agreed that we really should anchor the tree to the walls somehow.

Mum and I drove over tonight after he was done work and we all got the tree sorted out.
The damage wasn't as bad as he thought this morning. We did suffer casualties to both our childhood ornaments but I found a number of his in the branches.
We got it straightened up, tied to the wall and new ornaments on it.
When he gets the kiddoes tomorrow night they will come home to a nice looking tree instead of a sad leaning against a wall one.

I'm sorry about the loss of your family ornaments, but it's also overwhelmingly sweet that your parent was able to step in and help save half.

Oh that’s so sad :( I’m sorry to hear so many were broken, but glad your mom could help with some of it at least.
We had a similar fall several years ago (still sad over the loss of my beautiful childhood blown glass snowman ornament), now we always tie the tree to the wall so it can’t happen again, we put 2 cup hooks in the wall and use clear fishing line to tie it in place. My mom bought clear ball ornaments to put some of the broken pieces in so they weren’t completely lost even though they aren’t whole anymore, if you saved any of the pieces maybe you can do something similar?

Omg that is exactly what we are planning to do. He hasn't thrown the bag of broken mess away yet so I told him not to do it this weekend and when we have the kids for Christmas break we can make "The Great Crash of 23" ornaments with them.

Also I want to save all the top parts with the loops since they can be used in other old ornaments that loose theirs.

I remember this happening once when I was a kid! My dad always anchored the tree to the wall after that. I love the idea of saving some of the bits and putting them in clear ornaments, so clever. I'm sorry it happened to you!

Sorry I didn’t respond before, I hope your ornament making went well. Saving the tops is a good idea too : )
