Ok, funny story. Well, it wasn't funny at the time, but now I'm so relieved I can laugh about it.
I was doing my taxes for 2017 and discovered I owed $19,000. I was freaking the flip out about it, because I've been out of work for over a year and that would clear me out. I thought something was wrong and knew it had to do with my severance pay amount. I had been through this once before. My financial company screwed me a few years ago and I ended up owing $10,000. I naturally assumed something similar had happened.
Anyway, I was going over the numbers, double checked everything and I couldn't see anything wrong. I went over it a third time with another person and we noticed I missed the most important check box, the income tax deducted amount, which cleared the amount owing and left me with a refund.
I've never been more happy to make a stupid mistake.
