Sniffing Ponies.

Call me crazy, but G1 ponies have a certain indiscribable, wonderful smell. I can smell it when I walk near my G1 side of the room. The smell of G1 ponies just float around those shelves and make me want to touch them and hold them. Whenever I get new ponies, or just admire my older ones, I automatically pull them up to my face and inhale. It's very strange to describe, but I feel I'm not the only one intoxicated by the smell of G1 ponies. As a kid I collected G1 ponies (even though my era was G2-G3, I was a wanabe 80s kid and huge collector) and I loved the way the smelled way more than the G3 ponies I'd buy at Target.

What the ponyfeathers were you putting in your plastics in the 80s, Hasbro?
 
Haha I have an opposite experience. Since ALL of my ponies are preowned and most of them are from flea markets and thrift stores, they all have a funky smell when I first get them. I bathe them all and wash their hair, of course, but unfortunately none of my ponies (and I do have a few G1s) have any distinct smell besides, well, the scented ones like Chocolate Chipper.
 
I love the way my newborn twins smell. I don't know they have a great smell to them.
 
Melissa- huh, that's weird because my G1s are all preowned and they still have that smell despite everything they have been through.

Cannibalcow- pony smell perfume! Yes, we need to start a line. MLPTP's Pony Perfume, featuring scents from every generation, perfume puff scents, Berry pony scents, G3 scented pony scents, and more!
 
LOL! I'm the same, I must smell G1 ponies. Even if it's one from eBay and I'm not sure if I'm going to end up with a face full of smoke smell or something gross, I still shove that pony in my face and take a good wiff! I love the way G1 ponies smell, I was a child of the 80's and to me the smell of 80's plastic reminds me of fun, being carefree and all the awesomeness that was the 80's....I think I'll go sniff a pony before heading to work now.
 
That is so funny that you post this because I was going to post a similar one. I just moved and we were moving our boxes into the garage from our POD. I had to open my pony bin to get a quick sniff. Ahhhhhhh, the smell. Brings me back to childhood. Smells do bring such nostalgic memories.

Haha! I'm exactly like that, I won't always clean ponies before I smell them, which isn't smart but I haven't gotten a face full of smoke or cat pee or anything. Thank god, what an unexpected surprise that would be! "Yay! PONY PONY P- eew." I was born in 1996, and my first pony ever was Baby Dancing Butterflies, the G1 mail order I got at a thrift store for 25 cents (still own her, she's in great shape) and when I got my Windows98 PC ,I'd go on Dreamvalley every day afterschool and read and memorize it. I thrift store hunted and watched every TV show and movie. As a kid, I knew every pony from 1982 up to the current ones I collected as well. I read the trading post as a kid, and watched the forums for sellers to tell my mom what I wanted for Christmas, or swipe a good deal with my allowance money. So for me, the 80s ponies were my childhood, too. I've always been kind of a baby amoung my friends online and TPers because since childhood I've been a collector, and I would chat about things before my time. I have always been a good writer and articulate child, so many didn't know I was a kid.

I'm an 80s kid at heart, really. I was disappointed in my boyfriend for not getting my Breakfast Club reference when I had Saturday detention (for tardies, no worries) and when I got out I put my fist in the air like Bender did at the end. He was like,"April, what are you doing?" and I quoted the essay, and he looked at me with a blank expression. Then I sang "Don't you forget about me" and he asked me if I was singing some bad song on a Swiffer commercial.

You could say I really am stuck in the wrong era.
 
Lol we need to start a 'Pony Huffers Anonymous' support group! I love taking a big whiff of my Perfume Puffs... especially Lavender Lace!!! I would SOOOO rock some Lavvie scented perfume!

Ahhh... Pony smell.... *drools like Homer Simpson*
 
I don't go into my pony room every day, so the smell of vintage vinyl really accumulates. When I DO open the door, it's like being 5* again. G1's smell COMPLETELY different than the G3's, regardless of where they came from.


*I'm old now. And feeling it.

Hahaha, Pony huffers! That's cute! I just pictured a bunch of us all sitting in a circle dressed like hippies and one of us says "Heeeyyy man, you gotta get a huff of this perfume puff, she's totally gnarly" and we're passing around ponies like a-- uhh, a- oh I don't know if I'm allowed to say drug references here, but you know what I mean. Little paper twizzlestick full of happy grass. And each one putting the pony up to their face and closing their eyes.

Then someone spots us and says, "HEY! ARE YOU HOOLIGANS HUFFING PONIES?" and we'll act like nothing was going on and we'll just say "Nahh, man! We were just brushing their hair!"


I do realize that I am totally crazy and get lost in my crazy little worlds. xD

Yes, I completely agree! G3s only really have a smell when they are new out of box, and it's not the same smell, it's just a new tennis ball kind of smell. The G1 side of my room just hits me when I go anywhere near it, (like my closet) and then I just want to touch them all and hold them. So there I am, half-dressed and touching ponies, my ADD leading me away from the clothes closet and towards my collection. I often find myself distracted by them and it leads me astray at the most inconvient times.

I felt old when I was 5. I've always been the person who holds on to the happy things in the past, especially childhood. On my 5th birthday I literally worried myself sick and cried. When my Mom asked me what was wrong, I told her I was getting old, and I didn't want another birthday. I told her my childhood was going by too fast and I feared more than ANYTHING becoming a teenager. I was afraid I'd turn 13 and throw away all my ponies. My Mom told me no one has to grow out of their toys, and that she still had her barbies in the attic. I'm glad to say, 11 years later, I still want ponies for my birthday.

Holy crap that's more than a decade. I've lived a decade. In four more years that will be two decades. It's so weird, because that birthday seemed so close.

I know exacty what you're talking about, love it and the more you have on display, the better the smell gets. I can smell Twinkler's (she posts here) collection before her pony-room door is even opened. Mine, seeing as they're in dozens of boxes and bins don't smell until I crack open a box. :)

That's one of my picky princess things when I buy ponies. I keep almost every pony that still has the "new pony smell". It can fade away, or be replaced with other smells (perfumes/room sprays), or stinks like cigarette or musty basement.

I have most of my g1s packed in totes that roll under my bed. Every time I open one a wave of pony scented goodness rolls over me and my spirit lifts. It is wonderful thing.:rose3:
 
Ohhhh yes i so do it too! XD I recently got a huge haul of g1's, twinkle eyes to be exact! XD (gingerbread, sweet stuff, sweet pop, galaxy, locket, speedy, oh and also a sweetheart sister and a rockin beats pony!) and as soon as i was done running around the house squealing my head off in excitement, i took a huge whiff of them all XD the smell is just... incredible! XD
 
I love that smell... I bought a whole bunch of G1's and other vintage toys a while back, and even though they were FILTHY, they still had that smell! I could smell it through the crack in the lid of the box in the back seat of our car as we drove home... and my hubby is looking at me like I was freakin crazy cos I'm raving about the pretty colours and the vintage smell! Our bathroom almost always smells like that, cos it's my 'pony salon' and only the day after a good cleaning does it actually smell like a bathroom, LOL!
 
I do like the smell of vintage ponies ...but I've been spurned by terrible smells before so I tend to be cautious about smelling them without cleaning first. Another bummer for me is that I had to store some of my collection while I moved and I used those big Rubbermaid containers. The plastic smell from the container mixed with the G1 smell, so it's not the same. :( I'm hoping once they're out and sitting on shelves that the glorious childhood smell will return. *crosses fingers*

Well, if the smell dosent return, there's only one solution- buy more ponies. The smell will just get stronger: ) maybe if you took one that still smelled like a G1 pony and one that didn't and rubbed them together. Maybe theres some voodoo or ritual you could perform! xD
