Tarot and Astrology Chat

I don’t really understand astrology but I find it interesting even if I don’t totally believe what some readings may say. Sometimes a certain talk show on TV when I wake up has some man doing readings and I feel lost when he talks about planets too but it feels like something cool to understand. Back in my second year of college a girl used to do tarot readings at the back of the class a lot. I think she was just starting out
-nods- For the time I've spent with it and what I've tried to learn, the planets thing still confuses me, too. I understand enough to have specific questions about it, but actually getting answers to those questions when I can't ask anyone directly is another thing. I know that there's essentially various metaphorical "belts" in the sky, from the planets to the zodiac constellations to the one that is purely a construct, the houses, and the alignments of all of these things and how they interact with each other are important for astrology.

The "houses" each reign over specific areas of your life and personality. For instance, one of the houses reigns over how you treat your own things, while its opposite house reigns over how you treat other people's things. The planets each also have these sort of "personality traits" attached to them, so when you're born, what planet was "in" what house defines these traits of your personality. Like I think one of mercury's big things is anger, so if you had mercury in your house of family, then anger may end up being a big way that you deal with your family. That's simplified, I don't know all the traits and houses, but it's an example of how these thing function.

As for specifically how it gets talked about in daily astrology as opposed to birth charts... or actually especially with birth charts in mind, that's where it kinda confuses me. They use the phrase "your house of" a lot, and all I can think is "how do you know it's MY house though?" These readings seem like they assume a lot about a person based solely on their sun sign, it confuses me greatly.

Anyway, I hope that helped, instead of making it worse. I think I understand it only just well enough to try to explain it. Either way though, mixing astrology into tarot is certainly not something all readers do. A lot of them, but not all. Some of the tarot cards do specifically refer to specific signs though, like The Moon is the Pisces card in major arcana, so it's a natural union.

I did try to find out more about what else mine may be (the air/water/earth/metal thing) but I can’t remember, I should find out. I am also in club Aquarius too. Are we all Aquarius here then?

I don’t know where Chinese zodiac signs come in to this but mine is a rabbit.

I don’t know or understand much but it is a pretty interesting thing :rolleyespony:
Metal isn't one, at least not in normal astrology. (Not really supposed to be one in tarot either but some people like changing the elements to odd things.) It should be fire, earth, air, and water, with three of each element.

And I dunno! That's pretty curious, isn't it?! I wonder if it's MLPTP in general or if it's specifically the portion of MLPTP that's interested in talking about astrology.

I think everyone's just having fun sharing theirs :D The eastern zodiacs don't impact the western ones. They are interesting too, though! And I think we entered the year of the rabbit again just recently, didn't we?

I shall brake the Aquarius combo by being a Capricorn!

My mom has been talking about making one for a long time now.
Hahaha, nice! On both front haha, even with breaking the combo :b Besides, you never know if it's your moon or rising sign >u>

Metal and Wood are elements found in the Asian zodiac

Tarot is really neat! I don't know much about it though, since I'm a bit intimidated by it. I have an oracle deck I got from Meow Wolf Denver, and I love it! You draw two cards; one tells you what you already have, and the other tells you what you need to find. I try to keep my questions open-ended, and every reading I've done has given me good advice. In my latest reading, I was seeking some direction for my art. I ended up pulling three cards (a third was just calling out to me, so I took it!); what was already inside was Longing (awareness of Absence, possibility for misery if ignoring what's in the foreground), and the two that I needed were Transition (embracing Motion or risk falling into despair) and Direction (avoiding Stagnation and picking a Direction). Whether it's something about the universe or just my brain making connections, I think the ability to see helpful messages and guidance from oracle and tarot cards is so magical!

Nice! Oracle cards are definitely simpler and more straightforward than tarot cards, as I understand them. I haven't found a deck I like yet - I did get one, it's gorgeous and has a few nuggets of info I do like. I'd love something more suited, so I've been passively on the lookout for a good oracle deck, too. I'll have to take a look at Meow Wold some time :b

Hehe, nice! Sounds like you've got a good oracle deck and a good intuition :D And you definitely pinned it with that last comment haha, I feel the same way!

i'm a witch who practices tarot! :D my first and only deck at the moment is botanica by kevin jay stanton - it's an absolutely gorgeous deck, and i really love the symbolism and art history behind it! i may get the mushroom tarot sometime though, just because the art is cute and i like mushrooms LOL. i also really like the tarot artwork from the persona games actually, which were somewhat my introduction to the cards' meanings XD
i hope to make my own deck someday! my friend and i were thinking of making an 90s-00s nostalgia themed deck with that vibrant, colorful, lisa frank sort of energy to it ~ :rainbow2:

unfortunately i don't know much about astrology, but my western signs are sagittarius sun, gemini moon, and gemini rising! frankly i think i am a terrible sagittarius XD i'm very introverted and i never leave my house, LOL - buuut i think my gemini shows through for sure ^^;

Ohh! Gee I need to pay more attention. I completely and totally forget they had metal.
The planet thing is quite a lot to try to get your head around and I guess there must be way more to astrology than I thought previously! And the western and eastern differences too! It must be confusing to mix them all together. The talk show person never made it clear to someone like me who isn’t totally clued up on it all
I do like the story of the Chinese zodiac, maybe that’s because of the animal aspect to it. I’ve always loved animals. The Ty Beanie Zodiac collection is one of my favourites. Just missing horse, snake and dragon from my childhood collection then I’ll have them all but it’s not a main collection focus right now.

All the talk of tarot cards, they are pretty aren’t they? Are there any sort of decks that seem to have an “accuracy” or does it just come down to skill?

Oh, nice! That's kinda similar to my own oracle deck actually haha, I wonder if you might be interested in it? It's a bit odd, it does use plants, but rather than talking much about the plants properties, it talks about the plants' personalities... but, you know, it's worth a mention. It's called "The Illustrated Herbiary" by Mata Toll. The cards are in a sheet inside the book, you have to break them apart yourself. >.>;; They feel cheaper than standard cards, too though.

Oh my gosh, those are all very interesting decks. I'm surprised though if you were able to learn from something like a persona deck, and without owning it as well? Which mushroom deck is it that you have your eye on? And a deck with lisa frank energy would be intriguing haha.

Oh, double Gemini! Cool! Gemini is kinda like Pisces' sister sign, as they're both of a dual nature. :b And hey, no worries haha. In a basic sense, the sun sign is kinda "who you are", the moon sign is "how you feel", and it's the rising sign that is "how you show up in the world", so a lot of people tend to relate more to their rising signs.

Side note, I'm a little surprised at how many people have learned on odd decks. Even with my initially starting on the Dragon Tarot, I kinda figured out that starting with something like that was like hard mode tarot education. Going with the mentality of the grandfather of tarot, the Rider Waite, tarot cards are intended to be packed full of symbols for the reader's varied interpretations. Despite some of what I've said, the cards are intended to have various potential meanings. These super simplified decks don't give you much to look at, even the Dragon Tarot was fairly barren on symbology. I've learned that a big part of tarot, and especially making your own deck, is honing your understandings of these various symbols (as well as your own symbols) and how you see them, what they mean to you. Not unlike dream interpretation. I would love to know what you guys think about that, if you disagree with it or not.

There definitely is quite a lot! I don't think I'll learn it all until I take an actual course. Someone will definitely have to correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I have understood, the eastern zodiac is a lot simpler than the western. I think the element+animal combo is as deep as it gets. I remember trying to look into it beyond that once.

Ohhh, that's cool! Congrats on getting it nearly completed, and good luck on the last few!

They are, aren't they? Ah, and I happened to be talking about that earlier in this reply - the Rider Waite is considered the grandfather of tarot, and not only do lots of people carry it but there are many, many decks based on it. Including my Robin Wood. The books for both of these should be good to help you get more familiar with tarot as well, with the Rider Waite books often being more technical and in-depth and usually a bit dated in the way they talk about some things. The Robin Wood book does well to explain some of the mindsets behind the cards, and how to approach reading them. I think her book is a good guide for beginners.

I use tarot cards some time but I am better at dowsing

The crystal can be ask question and the downer by movement yes no. It can also help you locate items.

I use crystal on cords and rods to talk to my Haunted dolls.

Hahahahahaha, wow, the new look surprised me. I've finally sat down and started binge-watching monster high in order, myself, and actually I like Cleo a good bit too.

Anyway, I've not even started to get into dowsing myself, but it's one of the types I've considered trying. It can help you locate items? That seems super handy! The number of times I've needed something like that....

Honestly I mentioned that I'm trying to get into scrying with water, but there are a bunch of different types I'd like to try. tea leaves and bones would be interesting, as well.

Love this. I definitely pay attention to lunar cycles, astrological events, etc. I used to read tarot. Never done a chart though, seems really interesting. I always wanted to make my own tarot deck but I'm not very motivated. Lol

Ooh, if I may - if you're intersted, I think one of the best sites for birth/natal charts is one called Cafe Astrology. It's a bit confusing to navigate, but if you find the right page their birth charts are so in-depth they're hard to read in a single sitting.

What kind of deck would you like to make, if you don't mind sharing? c: Even just a little hint? ;)

I bought an mlp shirt with firefly on it as the Moon tarot, I'd love to see the whole deck!
Thank you for the recommendation, I'll have to check that out.

It's about learning partially, recognizing symbolisms particularly if the deck is inspired by cultural mythology, and eventually starting to trust your own intuition. The elaborate ones often come with a guide book to explain each card and get the reader started.
