I just need to vent about this term. I hate it. It sounds silly and in my opinion does not relate to G1 ponies. They were called symbols, because they are symbols. The cutie mark lingo is a Friendship is Magic invention and I don't like it.

Am I the only pony who is deeply irritated when others refer to a G1 pony symbols as cutie mark?

Come on, tell me I'm not the only Grumpy bear.

Well, Grumpy bear ;) I wouldn't say it bothers me per se but I see where you're coming from and using it to reference a G1's symbols could be considered quite the blunder to some hard-core G1 fans. I always say symbol unless I'm being silly and I'll sometimes call them a booty-mark, like beauty-mark LOL....get it :p

Would it help that I just hate all buttmarks equally

I prefer full body markings but can't stand cute stamps.

I knew them as symbols at first and I hate the term cause I get a mental image of butts clashing like drum cymbals >____> and it makes my brain hurt

But I've adapted to using the term cutiemark for simplicity purposes but still kinda hate it and it annoys me that people want "cutiemarks" on everything pony

Like I'll post a piece of art and someone will be like "but where's the cutiemark?" and my mind is going "ITS BUTT ATE IT. OMG."

....that was a much needed venting actually

Nope your not. Though G3 started that particular term. I just try to ignore it. But it irritates the crap outta me. All symbols are symbols to me, regardless of gen.

Bwahaha! Booty Mark!

Some like it some don't live and let live
I do just to call them something but that just me. If you don't that just you no worries we all like ponies so just call em what you want I say

Thank goodness I'm not the only one who gets irked by that term. I'm generally not a fan of it and just use "symbol" universally unless I'm specifically referring to G4 lore or something.

It just feels... I don't know, kind of belittling? In a way? Maybe I'm overthinking it. XD

I’m indifferent in either term. I use both depending on the popular term being used at each forum I’m using. Like if I’m talk with G1 & G2 folk it’s a “symbol” if I’m discussing with G3&4 it’s a “cutie mark.”

If I’m not really thinking about it, it’s a “cutie mark” mainly because most people know what I’m talking about then. But I have a love/hate relationship with them. As an artist I had found it difficult to choose one for my OC’s that haven’t been used by other artists or officially by Hasbro. But that’s the artist in me... lol

You ponies are amusing. I think I shall officially call them booty marks. I'm with Ziegirl on this one. The term seems belittling or something to me. Too cutesy maybe? I don't know. I'm just a bitter, old nag :P

I just hope collector wither you like the term or not can at least respect the fact if a person does like to call them cutie marks. And the cutie mark person respect the person who prefers another term.

Yes and yes!

I'm quite willing to as long as they aren't rude about it and attempt to condescendingly apply g4 logic to to the past 3 gens.

Then they and I will have words.

Cuz I'm like, petty and stuff sometimes.

I call them all cutie marks but I don't collect G1 if there is a g1 I do want I list the term Cutie mark must be in certain condition I have never had anything else to call them so it kinda sticks with me. I tend to shy away from G1 and just stick to G4 though I do love the cartoon and movie dearly.

I was a G4 collector first, so CM tends to slip off my tongue quite easily. Thinking about it, it is quite a silly term. I do tend to watch my tongue in G1-G3 spaces with regards to that.
It turns out, they were referred to as "Rump Designs" in G2, or, just plain "Design" in G1.

Early gens called them rump designs, not symbols, and g3 was the one that started calling them cutie marks, not g4. The more you know.

A G2 Coloring book? How cute!

I have been collecting for 35 years and I don't know of any G1 collectors who called them rump designs. They were called symbols by me and pretty much every pony friend I've ever had.

I got infected by G4 and call them cutie marks sometimes. I figure, no harm, no foul. I'd called them butt-toos for years though.

I like the sound of butt-toos. Rolls nicely off the tongue, offends uppity types. :D
