I'm super unlucky when it comes to neighbours. Some of you are aware of my issues over the years with noisy neighbours. I thought I had finally entered a period of relative peace in my home until this weekend.
The new owners of the condo above me are renting. The renters moved in on February 29 until 3:30am and they were ridiculously loud the whole time. Our condo has a noise problem. It's a wood framed building and the prior owners of the suite above installed laminate flooring and did not properly sound proof. I didn't waste any time addressing the noise issue with the new renters. I went upstairs the following morning and introduced myself to a fancy looking woman who was clearly wearing heels around the house. I spoke to her about the issues with noise and she stated she was sorry about the prior night and would be mindful of the noise.
Two days later and it's not much better. She must be wearing shoes around the house and/or be one of these insane people who stomp every footstep. I'm going into panic mode. I'm hoping it's temporary while she is settling in, but I'm concerned this is going to be a daily occurrence. I can't keep living like this, I'll go mad. I'm sensitive to noise to begin with, but I keep ending up with crazy people who are excessively noisy. For example, last night the footsteps were so loud that my dishes were rattling.
I've been mulling over my options. I want out of this condo, but I can't buy another condo right now, because my income is too low and I haven't been working long enough. I could rent my place out and try to find another place to live, but there is a housing crisis in this city right now and who wants to rent when you own. Argh. I'm hoping I will be getting the job I've been waiting for since last July, because it will mean I will have to leave for training for 6 months and I will have to rent my condo. It might buy me some time to come up with a plan.
Oh, just to add about a bit about my history with the building. I do not get along with the Strata president. She took over for me as president, because I couldn't deal with her brand of crazy. The Strata receives many noise complaints and they never do anything about them. I have taken my Strata to the tribunal over past noise issues. The point being, that reasonable and usual methods for dealing with this kind of issue will not work in this case.
I'm thinking I'll wait a week or so and give her a chance to settle in and hope it gets quieter, but I may write to her about my concerns or visit her again. Maybe I could bribe her to be a decent neighbour by sending her muffins.
If you have any suggestions for ways I might handle this situation, I'm all ears.
