It’s basically a singer in a program! You enter a melody and lyrics and the program sings it back; from there you can edit and fine-tune that voice, from vibratos and staccatos to pitch and dynamics. Traditionally, vocalsynths are comprised of hours worth of short vocal samples from voice providers, but more recent AI synths (like the above-mentioned AiSuu and ROSE) feed off of dozens to hundreds of full-length recordings from their VPs. It's a little complicated to convey in short, but it's really cool!
