Let's hear some hot takes!

But this can also be said to people who are pure G1 who do not like anything about g4 and they let everybody know they dont like them constantly lol

Either way - everybody needs to respect the entire pony line cause to be truthful, we all have a love for the same thing in one way or another - ponies
YES. No other comment, just YES.

(I don't like G4. Not even because of the style, or because they focused waaay too much on their mane characters. I also loved the show at the beginning. I don't like it because I didn't have the best experience with the fandom.)

I feel ya about the fandom thing - there is always some trash people

ive had weird experiences with G1 people as well, where they just completely trash any generation cause they arent "g1" lol

there are good g4 people out there, i promise :) just the "purists" are the crazy ones. but like i said before, that goes towards also g1 "purists" who can be quite rude as well! "Purists" or any fandom are just on a different level than a general collector

and when i mean "purists" it means the people who believe that that is the only thing in existence, not a exclusive collector. Like a only g1 collector, or a g4 collector. I mean the people who take things to the extremes lol

either way, i only defend because g4 is actually what got me started deeply into ponies :) (i was a normal "horse girl", didnt like ponies lol, did not like them at all!, but eventually got sucked in by them lol)

oh and btw, i own g1-5 now lol

That is true. I still don't want to touch G4, but that's not because I'm a purist, it's more, because eye bleach haven't been invented yet.

I meant that the early G4 fandom wasn't exactly what I would call child safe. And I know, that there have been a lot of discussion about this, but that doesn't exactly make me unsee what cannot be unseen, if you're picking up, what I'm laying down. I'm glad, that at least now people are seeing that some things should've stayed behind passwords, age verifications and paywalls.

oh any kids show these days have the dirty side to it where the teens/adults of the world take and turn it disgusting

but to be honest, ive seen g1 versions of that stuff too, no where near as much, but its out there surprisingly lol

I know, I also found some g3 once, but that was once, and it was behind a password, and I was an adult on an account with filters for that stuff turned off. It was also not nearly as "bad" as some of the later g4 stuff got. But yes, I understand. And honestly it wouldn't bother me at all, if the g4 fandom also kept it behind at least passwors or something. I know, that for example deviantart has (or at least for a good few years had) a feature where you can blur stuff so anyone who's not logged in /not following you /underage can't see it. Which is more than enough in my opinion at least for people who are not interested in that kind of stuff to not just accidentally run face first into it.
Otherwise I don't really care about shaming anyone for making or enjoying these things. Some are legit tasteful pieces of art (obviously most are not, but that's also my personal opinion). I'm not the kind of person who's interested in it, but as long as everybody making it and looking at it is a consenting adult, I couldn't care less tbh. I'm actually happy for artists for getting their bag, cause I know, that this kind of stuff is usually not the starvation wage that a lot of artists work for.:D

long story short - internet is bad xD

Part of the problem with the g4 fandom is that it got popular around the same time as a lot of the rest of the internet became distinctly not child friendly. How many kids games/sites got shut down in the 2010s? Where else are they supposed to go but mainstream websites? A lot of content was behind age verifications, paywalls, and filters. But that's not gonna stop a determined kid.

Throw in the rise of creepy content, and the creepy content targeting kids specifically, you've got the mess that g4 ended up in.

It probably also didn't help that a good chunk of the fandom in the public spotlight ended up being furry/furry adjacent. That comes with its own stigmas, warranted or not.

Hmm hot take... I don't care if people customize rare ponies lol

(Kidding!! :lolpony: I care too much about rare ponies, I just try not to!)

I'm not sure if my takes are hot enough! OH I have one: I enjoy the worldbuilding for G5 more than G4, even if I like the visuals for G4 WAY more than G5. G5 as a 3D cartoon in motion - great! But trying to put them into a 2D format for stickers, or Celestia help us, an illustrative style based off of the 3D pony linearts? Awful. They just look like human faces, no muzzles at all! And don't get me started on the Tell Your Tale cartoon style. (But it's growing on me! I'm trying, here!)

In terms of the worldbuilding, the concept of 'entire pony clans have been divided for generations and now one pony will have to reunify them and rediscover pony magic' is way more compelling to me than 'huge nerd who can't make friends has to make friends'. I love the G4 world being more fantasy, more medieval, but G5 feels like there's a lot to explore, and more potential lore to discover. That said, baby dragon whose personality is 'farts and burps' is the worst. :lolpony:

I also felt like the writing quality severely dropped in G4 after they dropped the e/i label, and were allowed to get way lazier with their gags.

I got a hot take that has nothing to do with ponies!

I personally hate the child friendly internet, I mean this site is the only place I have anything to do with that's child friendly.
I could go way deeper into this but kids deserve spaces that aren't hostile to them like neopets, club penguin, bella sara, and all those kid friendly toy sites like how Barbie.com used to be. Adults deserve spaces without having to censor every little thing. It's partly b/c the internet has shrunk down to a few social media sites that try to cater to everyone and make no one happy but advertisers and investors that we are in this pickle.

It gets a little tricky concerning a fandom that spans a large age range but if the separate spaces are allowed to exist then usually a neutral third space, like the Trading Post, can bridge the gap.

Look Hank, the less we know about your build-a-guillotine beginner kit purchase on the deep web, the less chance we have to be implicated when the coppers come-a-knockin. Also word of advice, don't buy a used guillotine. They're purported to be haunted.

;)

Personally, I don't really have any attachment to G2-4, but I don't have any hate for the other gens. The G4 merch and toys are cute, but I'm space limited as it is.

My neices were into G4 and the cartoon, so I did watch some with them. Sometimes I was shocked what was slipped in. Movie references with not child safe ...characters. And all those references aimed at adults definitely played into creating that older fanbase.

I've bumped into stuff, but I had already seen worse. 1998-2006 internet was pretty wild and there was no thought to age restrictions. Does anyone else remember the fanart from Space Jam that would turn up on unlicensed t-shirts and what not at fairs shortly after the movie came out?

@LilyLightly020 your points are precisely why I avoid most fanbases in general. Fanbases can really ruin one's enjoyment of something. I've only joined this site, now, despite knowing about it for many years because it is moderated and populated by decent people.

I used to go on the Bella Sara site a lot, I had the trading cards too :) (I’m still on neopets!)

I guess your right but doesn't mean I have to like it when they try to child friendly a site I like, I mean they were ruining Youtube for a bit with that crap, at least they've kind of backed off with that stuff somewhat since then. Also I still don't see the appeal social media has to people I mean it's just a bunch of disjointed conversations with ads everywhere.

But then again I'm not sure why I'm talking like I'm some kind of massive web surfer, when I realize that I only really go to around four sites consistently, those being this place, a different forum, a games dev thing, and youtube.

At least the whole youtube thing gave me partial inspiration for my youtube archive where I download all the videos from channels I like, I'm at 812 channels and over 40,000 videos as it stands right now!

I don't think I'd need a kit for that, there's plenty of crap floating around that could be used to build one, but I would buy an old one because I ain't afraid of no ghost.

I do not like the baby brothers, i think their mouth is awfully ugly - they are just over all ugly lol

the ones with the swivel heads are okay, but i dont like the like, lucky pose

I agree on all but the family brothers. Those three are so cute to me and idk why they’re different. But yeah, I don’t care for any of the other boy ponies.

It wasn't just that G4 fans had a lot of NSFW, it was that they put it up everywhere without warnings or forethought.

The Transformers fandom is the horniest one I've ever seen. but does the entire internet know that? No, because nsfw gets tagged and people don't post it in communities where it's not wanted. There are dudes who have been TF collectors for 30 years who are completely unaware that most of the female fans are reading steamy fanfics and drawing, like, very humanoid and well-muscled butts on all the robots. (Among other anatomy.)

The thing is, the early G4 fandom (mostly guys) was very insecure about liking a girly show for babies. So all the NSFW and the repudiation of previous gens (like posting "KILL IT WITH FIRE" on previous gen Youtube videos) was tied up in proving the gen THEY liked wasn't for little girls. (Even though it was, lol.) So the NSFW everywhere was pretty intentional. Which is why it was annoying and inappropriate. Just total disregard for anyone outside their bubble.

Anyway, my hot take is that Transformers Animated Megatron is overrated and not that sexy.

(My actual hot take is that the Big Brother molds are pretty ugly and the marketing on the first set was bafflingly bad from a business perspective. Like they couldn't decide whether to market them towards girls or be like "Look, THESE ones are for boys!" so they put football and baseball on their rumps but the commercials for them are still 100% girly with 100% little girls in them and nary a little boy to be seen.)
I want to laugh and wince at the same time. XD Xo
