It's funny - Mimic is such a rare pony yet I have never not seen her available on eBay. It seems like there's a lot of them out there for being so hard to find. Of course I understand that she's a "hot item" and accept the fact that she goes for more than most, but lately...

I keep an eye on eBay and Mimic was selling for an average of $75 to $80. However, despite the numerous individuals being auctioned off, I've noticed in increase in her price. Starting bid prices are at least $100 if not more. One's even over $200! Come on - really?

Despite not having her in my own collection (a frustrating fact induced by not being able to pay any large amount for a single horse right now regardless of her value) I still don't see that she's SO hard to find that she should warrant this incredible increase in price. I have to chuckle and wonder if anyone will actually jump at these Buy It Now prices.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I have too noticed that she is always on ebay or other auction sites and her price is not something I would even think to pay for a pony. There seam to be alot of her these days and we might find she is no longer a rare pony. Even though I do love Mimic and would love to have her in my collection I wont even be thinking about buying her till her price drops to at least under $100.
 
I've definitely got a list of about 20 US-release ponies (non-mail order) that are way harder to find than she is. Hehe, she's always on Ebay.

Some ponies, like Red Roses or TAF Buttons are only on Ebay like, once every 3-4 weeks. It's nuts!
 
That's the thing though. Mimic isn't "rare." She's "sought-after." Which means everyone wants her, not that she's hard to find. It's the same with anything. The newer G4's that aren't available everywhere go for insane prices right now, but they're not exactly rare either; they're still being produced.

Mimic was, however, more difficult to find even when she was being produced due to the way products were shipped, so she's naturally going to be harder to come by but is by no means as rare as some of the foreign ponies or mail orders that came out at the same time. But yes, it is taken for granted that Mimic's price is right around $100. If you want her, you'll pay for her, or keep hoping you find her at Goodwill (because that DOES happen!).
 
Good point, Skeen. I can understand how sought after she is - I'm one of the seekers. LOL I still think with supply-and-demand issues, she shouldn't be over $100! I can accept the $75 range. It is funny to think that something that isn't rare could be so sought after (and hard to get a hold of)... though I suppose if a lot of people who don't really collect many, or any, MLP are after her it would make it more difficult to get her in a collection.

BTW, no one would happen to have Mimic available for trade/sale around here, would they? :hugegrin:
 
I'm with you Skeen. I just keep waiting to find one at a thrift store. And it does happen certainly. Maybe someday to you and me :hugegrin:

Psst -I have one. ;) She's from childhood though, so I completely missed out on the "need Mimic" portion of collecting. But if I find one at a thrift store I'll know who to contact!
 
I have Mimic, but i did see this mimic on ebay and it was Ove $1,984 or something
 
I still hope to find Mimic and Munchy at a thrift store, Munchy seems to be on the Hard-to-find list as well.

I did luck out once and found Baby Crumpet at a thrift store in South Dakota once in a huge haul of like 20-30 G1 ponies, most of which I didn't have! ^_^ I was in heaven when I checked out the toy isle, and there was practically a WALL of G1 Ponies!! I had to pinch myself to make sure it wasn't a dream, we've all had those kind of dreams before!
 
I wouldn't call her rare - she pops up all over the place, the only reason that her price is so darn high is because she's a very sought after pony - why, I don't know. Maybe it's because you don't see many green ponies.

RavenFeather - awesome find! :bounce: I remember bringing in a haul like that once... and only once. That was years ago and it just isn't the same anymore. Ah, the good ol' days. If only Mimic would show up in this area. LOL

Over $1,000 for Mimic? Was that where the bidding was or the Buy It Now price? I know there was one that was MOC for over $1,000. Again, I don't think I'd spend over $75-$80 for a very good conditioned one - loose, of course. Am I wrong in thinking this price range?

I went through the Mimic phase in 1997 cause I needed her to complete my TE collection. She was going for about $50 then and I thought it was insane enough!!! I was luckier in those days and Mimic wasn't sucha household name, so there are often slips where you can get her for cheaper. I got one for $13. Her mane was snipped but nothing a rehairing can't fix. She's good a mint now and I got her for $13, not $100. That is good for my soul.
 
derpy- was the >$1k Mimic MIB or loose? That's nuts if she's loose, but she goes for about that much, if not more if she's MIB.

goldenclopper- nice! $13 for Mimic, that's just as amazing as finding her in a thrift store in my opinion. So cool, I'd cherish her and think about that every time I look at her.
 
I guess I haven't gone through a "Mimic phase" yet. If I find one, thta's great, but I'm not going to go crazy trying to find one!
 
Once I saw one for $25 on ebay. I was like, 8 though, and had no idea who she was. Grr! Would have been a good deal :(
 
I don't understand what is sooo great about Mimic? She's a more mediocre looking pony if you ask me, but to each their own, I guess. I just don't get what makes her so special?
 
I have her myself and I am very lucky to get her. I think it boiling down to that she had her own tv cartoon special with the golden horses. I think her color makes her unique. Her pose is awesome.
I remember way back there used to be a place called the church of worshiping mimic?? I can tell if someone keeps talking about X pony most people tend to want to buy that one too as a factor. I also found out that mimic was short packed maybe there werent as many out because at the time children didnt like mimic's color. I could list more but I wont. Shes just a very well talked about pony. Shes awesome to me.
 
I do want Mimic but mostly because I collect green ponies. I'm really cheap though so I'll only get her if I find her in a thrift store or something like that.
 
I want a Mimic (when I have the funds) - she's the pirate pony! And therefore awesome XD
