Hey fellow collectors. I haven't really touched my G3s in a while, so the other day I was just doing a bit of dusting when I noticed the notoriously sticky Divine Shines were even stickier! Especially my Glitter Belle.

You can't see it on her, so a photo won't help (added one anyway), but I just picked her up and she stuck to my hand. It was pretty darn gross, if you ask me! I washed her again with soap to try to get most of it off. I've already washed her since taking her out of the package (most of you will remember that the Divine Shines had that problem right out-of-the-package) but it seems it's resurfacing, so do a check. It could be a plasticizer from the special plastic they used, or it could be something else, but regardless, it's gross, and would do them good to have them cleaned.

Well, there's my Divine Shine Report 2009 all done. :elespin: See you next year, folks!

oh wow! I never noticed that and I just checked mine and sure enough they do have a slight gunky feel to them... what is that? Do you think they will just become a pile of goo after 20 years?

Eww!!! :[ That is lame!!! I love the divine shines, I wish they weren't all goopy and gross! Thanks for the update!

Oh no. I love the divine shine ponies. I hope my Secret Wish doesn't start to turn into goo.

I want to know this too.... divine shines are fairly high on my want list but I don't want to get a pony if it's eventually gonna be all gone... :(

I don't own any of the Divine Shine ponies, but this is something that I will be aware of if I come accross one. I'm sorry that this happened!!

I'm also wondering if it could be the chemical that they use for these kind ponies.:butterfly:

Hmmm, that adds to the debate in my head. I haven't bought any of them yet. They look strange to me. SSC, your pic makes them look gorgeous though. lol. But if they are going to get sticky, I don't know if I want to buy any. Jeez....it never ends. lol

Hey guys and gals, thanks for all the comments and input. Well, I'm not chemist, but I think that maybe it's just a byproduct of the type of plastic that they had to use to get the clear look. I'm trying to think about them as the G1 Sparkle ponies, and if you notice, lots of them have kind of ... turned a little more greyish/opaque over the years. I don't know though, it doesn't seem to happen to all of them, it's not a time issue, therefore, but maybe one of storage. My Divine Shines are on a a shelf in a closet in a room that is temp-controlled just as the rest of the house is.

I'm a little bit at a loss as to what it is causing it, but I don't think they'll completely turn into muck through time. You know how sometimes you'll get a sticky G1? Kind of faintly slimey? And then you know how sometimes you get a really hard G1, like, you could knock someone out with it? Hehe, well, I've read that the vinyl they use has plasticizers in it to make it soft. However, sometimes over time (or other factors?) they can leach out of the plastic, and that might be the answer to the sticky stuff. That's also why some of the ponies turn so hard, they have no more plasticizers.

I don't think that the Divine Shines will be ruined, but I think it's probably a good idea to wash them every 6 months or so. I don't know that mold or bacteria would be able to grow well on the plasticizer, but I certainly don't want stuff sticking to them.

But ultimately, I have no idea what's causing it. Glitterbelle was the worst case, the others weren't so bad. It could be she just came from an extra-plasticizer-infused batch of plastic. Ok, I don't think I'm making sense anymore, so I'm going to stop typing! :)

SSC, your pic makes them look gorgeous though.
Thanks josiekat!

oooh ill have to check, as i picked one up this weekend and didnt pay attention! lol

Ok everyone... DO NOT WORRY!

This is the same condition my G2 Hip Holly had. Those that have her fresh from card remember she smelled terrible and was really gooey. I just washed her probably once a week (since my daughter would pick her up often), and it progressively got better and better and stopped happening all together. I don't know how long the process took but my Hip Holly hasn't needed to be cleaned in over 6 years now so I think it's very safe to say she will be fine forever. She has been stored for up to a year in archival tissue paper but has also spent most of her years out on a shelf somewhere in our central air/heating home.

There has been no deterioration in color or transparency. She has not become any more hard than any of my other G2s and certainly not brittle.

Breath a collective sigh of relief :)

SoSoftClaire~I also have all the G1 sparkle ponies and mine haven't really turned gray or very opaque like others I have seen. Their color is still very nice so perhaps it's a light/exposure issue? Maybe a plastic batch issue? Mine have always been out on a shelf in our pony room which has central air/heating.

I would also like to note that all these ponies have lived in different regions of the US...wet and gray Northeast, humid and hot South Carolina and moderate, seasonal Maryland.

Josiekat~the picture provided by SoSoftClaire is very accurate. I love my divine shines and the color/transparency in her pictures is true to life. They are beautiful in person!

Gross. That is a real downer, especially since I love their look so much =(

Ahh, thank you Lil Alley Cat! Quite an informative post! And it's put all the worries to ease. So I guess I'll just clean my Divine Shines occasionally, and keep doing what I've been doing. No worries here, I like cleaning ponies anyway. :)

I figured that it might have been a chemical. If I ever aquire one, I'll be prepared!! That is a beautiful pic, of all of the Divine Shine Ponies!! I'm sorry that I didn't include that in my earlier post!!:hippie:

That's really weird, I never knew they got like that. Like is the plastic dissolving or melting? Hmmmm...

Hmm..that sucks. Must check mine! D: I should probably take them out of the hot place they are stored and at least keep these poor girls in the air conditioning.
I hope they don't turn into goop. :(

EDIT: Well, I just checked Tangerine Twinkle, and she seems to be quite sticky..T.T I'm gonna go check the others now.

I haven't checked on my two Divine Shines...they are currently in a plastic baggie with powder laundry soap and two sheets of bounce. They are the stinkiest ponies I've ever had. Beautiful...but STINKY! I've washed them soo many times, but the stink just seems to get worse.
