Well, it happened.....

MLP Live ponies?! Nooooo!

My heart goes out to you! Luckily my older son can't play with scissors yet but he did rub off the flocking on ss bouncy (figures he didn't wanna play with something that wasn't perfect). Kids like the nicer things though :)

aww =[ i would go despair if anyone tried to cut my g1's My sis did used to cut babie hair... but not shes in her 20's i don't think i need to worry anymore.

A few years ago i did cry once... i had got on my mums nerves i suppose through an argument... and she gave them all flying lessons down the stairs. So i am sure this is why some appear more rubbed than when i recieved them. It upset me a ton to find them all spread at the bottom of the stairs and in the living room ... i was fortunate the dog did nt start chewing them up x-x

Oh Margie,

I feel for you and and pretty soon me and Thalia will be right there with you. However at least Mia is old enough to know which ponies are actually hers. I'm sure it's a bit disappointing since you just received those for her. However it could have been much much worse.

Just the other night my daughter was pulling my collection, pony by pony, off the shelves and handing them proudly to her daddy. I had to calm down a little as she grabbed them by the hair as she picked them up knowing that I just cleaned and styled them days before. The other day she tried to eat one of my extras by the leg. :uhoh:Luckily she is not old enough to have scissors.

I think it may be a challenge for toy collectors, their collections, and their children. Toys are in fact toys and should be loved and played with, however sometimes that goes against our desire to keep them nice and preserve them.

I guess all we can do is keep our cherished items up and away and teach our children the difference between our toys and theirs, and also how to take care of them as best as we can.

The kiddos don't understand the importance of what a collection is. They still see the ponies as toys to play with. That being said, our daughter has ponies that she plays with that she is allowed to do whatever she wants with. (*Ducks from shoes being thrown by other pony collectors*). I believe that she can play with her toys as she wants. However, I do keep the "special" ponies out of her reach so that she has those for later in life, when she is old enough to appreciate collecting and preserving. I know the MLP Live ponies are a totally different story but with some of the G3's, we can get doubles of some so she has some to playfully ruin and others for later in life.

First of all, I don't know how old your daughter is, but I think our first concern should be she the fact she had access to scissors and was alone when she styled the ponies. Let's just be grateful she didn't harm herself. Ponies are replacable, children are not.

Second of all- you gave her MLP Live ponies...? I don't have children but if I had a young child, MLP Live would not be the obvious choice. IMO, your daughter is way too young to understand or appreciate the value of ponies, so I guess this should be a learning moment for the adults rather than the child. With so many Pinkie Pies and Mintys around, there is absolutely no need to give her a set that rare. If she wants to style ponies- fine. Just give her any other $1 Minty and Pinkie Pie from the local thrift store. Clean them up and there ya go! Nice pony bait for the little hair stylist. ;)

I don't think there's any need to make her feel she's the bad guy if she's still really young. I know I always said I'd teach my children not to destroy their toys, but it's silly to believe they actually will leave valuable ponies alone. :| I think pets and children should not have access to rare ponies, ever. It's our responsibility to preserve ponies and when we give them access to rare ponies, we should always calculate the risk we will end up with a damaged or destroyed collectibles. In my mind, it's never their fault. Cats get jealous of our favorite (often RARE!) ponies, they pee on them and pluck their hair. Dogs will chew on any pony they can get ahold of, because they love them. And children, well children... Children know what ponies are special to mommy and they too get jealous or feel left out if we pay too much attention to their rarity, give them lectures about keeping them clean and so on. The rarer ones become forbidden fruit and are the first ones to end up baity. Sad, but true! :krakrani:

Oh! Im So sorry to hear that... Seeing as they were so new aswell... :(

*Hugs*

TwilightStarshine,
Mia2004 said her daughter had safety scissors. I've tried using those things before. a 4 and 1/2 year old has nothing to worry about. Those things can't cut butter.
(You'd faint to see my mom raising me. I HATED those big plastic safety scissors, because they were so dumpy, and couldn't cut clean/smooth. so she gave me those sharp drug shop scissors they sell for hairstyling. lol. I wasn't even in kindergarden at the time. In kindergarden I kept trying to use the teachers scissors.)

It's sad that some htf ponies got the clip, but In the end anyone can buy/give their children any toy they wish. *shrugs* We will see more stories of ponies damaged (kids, Dogs, cats, birds, postal service etc), stuff happens.

They were safety scissors and not only does she has access to those at home but she does at school too. She does need to learn how to use them doesn't she? In fact school is probably to blame so I will let them know how you feel. They practice cutting something almost everyday. She was probably imitating those projects.

She is 4 1/2 and as I mentioned these ponies were hers so they for her to do what she will, it just broke my heart to see the hair cut like that. It was my whole point in listing this thread. I thoughts others could sympathize, thought it might be a good topic for discussion. I had a conversation with her not a lecture. In all honesty I hope she isnt one to cut pony/doll hair. But if she does then it is me that needs to learn to deal with it. I would never blame her for something like that.

I am really not happy with the tone of your post as I wasnt expecting a lecture for giving my daughter a toy and to be made feel as if I placed my child in danger. After all I am living in the real world of raising a child in a normal home with scissors, knives in drawers, we dont have those under lock and key either. I even believe she may trip over some of the things laying around the floor at times (usually her own stuff and placed there by her), so maybe my house is not safe at all and I should be reported. But most of all what I want you to know its isn't your concern about the fact she had scissors, safety or not. This is not a debate after all and I really don't appreciate it.

And yes I gave her MLP Live ponies. You know they sold them at the show for children to play with anyhow don't you? As if its anyone business the ones I just purchased for her were cheaper shipped then at the show. And if I decide (for those really nice pony friends, please know I wouldn't do this) to buy a Mimic and give her a mohawk then so be it after all its my money and my pony. Thanks so much for your support! *retracts claws and leaves*

Forgot to add that since I have boys...the one mostly destroys cars/trucks.
He demolished a die cast collectors rig in under 10 minutes :)
After that I started to think, "I wonder if that was worth something...oops"

:bighug: to mia2004. I used to cut my toys' hair all the time when I was younger, much to my mother's horror. I thought I was making them look better. And it was fun. I never grew up with safety scissors - we only had the big adult kinds that could probably stab your eye out, but so can many other things (pencils, etc). My mom never baby-proofed, her mom didn't, we started using knives to cut fruit, veggies, etc (with supervision) when we were really little. My sisters and I all grew up just fine, yes, we could have been hurt, but we could have been hurt in many other ways, even with over-cautious parenting. You're a fine mama, don't worry.

Is it odd part of me wonders why people are giving 4 year olds such rare ponies? Well, I just apologize for thinking a thing like that, too. Of course It is entirely YOUR choice what ponies you give to your daughter. Entirely. I'm sorry I ever had any opinion at all about My Little Ponies speaking from one collector to another.

I'm obviously in the wrong here. Sorry.

I really don't classify them as rare ponies, harder to find yes, but not rare. My Little Ponies were made for children, they were intended to be played with. And I gave them to her cause she wanted them, asked for them. I have been searching for a set that weren't overpriced for her. Mia LOVES MLP, she loves Pinkie Pie, Minty, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, all of them. She was the original MLP fan in our home. The Ponyville Birthday set was the very first thing she asked me to buy for her over 2 years ago. I am sure she is more like you and many here when you were children and fell in love with these plastic beauties. Its because of her that I became a collector, how I found this site, and why we spend so much time on and with ponies. That is why I gave them to her and that is why I will give her rarer ponies when she is responsible and ready for them.

I am the pickiest collector there is and I may not like the fact that some one purchase a truly rare pony and customize it but its their pony so its really not my business what they do to it. I have always had an issue with people that are really hard on people that do things like that. Its their property, so its really up to them to do with it what they will. That is just the way I feel.

You are so precious! And I love you so much for this post! Thank you so much! ~Hugs~ We placed latches on cabinets and toliets when Mia was first born. Luckily she was never one to explore these areas and it was never really an issue. The only time she did was when we were on vacation and she pulled out all the pots and pans from under the sink in the kitchen and unrolled a brand new roll of paper towels. Right at the feet of 4 adults in a split second.

I know exactly what you mean. Losing game or puzzle pieces seem to be what Mia can do best with her toys. If I am not right on her to pick up immediately after herself or not clean it up myself, it never fails they will disappear faster then the speed of light! :)

I can't use the safety scissors at all. My fingers are way to fat. Always have been! I am always concern about what can happen, would classify myself as more so over protective then not but you have to be careful as it can backfire on you so I think your Mom did the right thing. :)

I had forgotten and wouldnt have even placed this in the same category but Lilly (our dog) chewed a Royal Bouquet last fall. :hide:

Well there's a reason there are so many custom bait ponies out there, right? I say they were just well "loved" by their children and may someday go on to be a wonderful, unique works of art. I'm sure your daughter will still love them w/ cut hair. :)

Oh,. it is so hard to find a balance sometimes. I feel you on this. Love and hugs to you!

My girls have always looked after their ponies from when they were very little, the biggest problem here is losing all the accessories, and them ending up all over the house.....
They are like socks, they never get found.

Far as dogs eating ponies..... I won a German Raindrop on ebay years ago, I was so pleased that Id got her for such a low price, She was part of a lot. The seller emailed me to say that the lot was fine, but Raindrop was gone, a dog had eaten her....... UGHH..... so I never received my lovely pony.... I actually asked for a picture of the damaged pony and was told that Id be getting a picture after the dog had passed her.....:hide:, which Fortunately I never got.....
OMG,such a bad dog!
I wouldn't have wanted pics of it after, either.*

haaa so cute and sad >.< Half our G3's have been cut...some of them look quite good actually, but poor autumn sky has a mohawk and no tail...if my Applejack's hair got cut i don't know what i would do...

Oh my goodness...that is just so sad...

Awww man, Margie! I'm so sorry, I would have been so sad to walk upon a site such as that one. Hugs to you, and to your daughter as well. Hey, at least they aren't completely ruined with marker or something!

I was just telling someone I wonder if these two will end up being her favorites, the ones she holds on too forever. :)

I have heard the excuse the dog ate my homework in school many years ago! ;) Sorry about your German Raindrop. But glad you didnt have to see the evidence in the end.

I wouldnt have been nearly as surprised if it was marker instead of scissors. Mia is more of an artist then a stylist! lol Her early customizing is what I need to prepare myself for next. :) I half expect to see her own cutie markers added to a pony one day. :artist:

As someone who never chewed on/wrote on/cut the hair of toys, I wish I could offer some cure-all explanation. I think the only reason I was that way, though, was because I had a cousin the same age who drew scars and cut the hair on her collector's Barbies. She always made me play with the messed up ones, so maybe that's what turned me off of toy mutilation, haha.

I'm guessing that since your daughter was crying, she'll grow out of the hair-cutting phase pretty fast. She seems to be feeling real remorse over it, and I wouldn't really worry about it. ;) In any case, the MLP Live set isn't too coveted, so I'm glad it wasn't a bad loss!

Oh, and regarding the sidebar about dogs - I've got a young corgi, and she for the most part ignores everything that isn't specifically given to her as a chew toy or food. It might be because she just isn't smart enough to notice it on her own, but in any case my many ponies and stuffed animals have been safe so far. I wouldn't let collecting turn anyone off of getting a pet. :)
