Cosplay Chat

@Jellybean
Thank you so much for the advice and offer to be a resource for questioning. I think you’re right, pushing the boundaries of my normal limitations and style will be fun. This first cosplay with the kinda grunge punk aesthetic won’t deviate just a ton from my regular styles honestly, but I’m enjoying the changing up of a character to fit what I like. I even have the platform boots from Killstar with their logo of a crescent moon cat so it fits the theme.

I actually have a question for my current cosplay I was debating using iron on vinyl to put the dark moon symbol on the back and “Wicked” for the character. I’m partially leaning towards fabric paints and a stencil thought to give it a more home made look. What’s a good fabric paint if you know of one? It’s on gene fabric and I wouldn’t want it to bleed if I ever have to hand wash it.

Also, the character wears jewel cuffs and a necklace. I was thinking spiked and healed wrist cuffs and a choker. Should I jump into leather? I’ve done leather work before but it’s so expensive or is there a better option?

I love the pony outfit you made! I went and looked through all the updates and that must have taken so much patience. Honestly not to fan person too hard but I’m still kinda in awe of your work.

The buttons on my jacket have the Torrid logo. I was thinking about roughing up the words with sand paper and painting them with black nail polish. Would that be weird?

@Glistening Rainlight
I understand. I’m a teacher and style is kinda quirky. I might wear a giant fluffy prom dress one day and deer antlers with some fairy looking stuff another day. My students find it amusing and so do I, but it does mean I lack any definition of a particular style for myself. Some days that’s fine and some days I wish I knew. Not to turn the convo to myself just saying I can relate.

Your artwork is beautiful. When I have a little money together I would love to commission you for a piece. Maybe it will help me solidify my character ideas.

@Sassarazzmadazzles
I’m thrilled to see what you come up with! Post pictures please. If you’re comfortable of course

@AzaleaArt
You're very welcome. I might totally ask you for advice on bag-making at some point if you don't mind. I want to make the characters Luna P accessory into a bag for conventions at some point. I know I won't be ready for it the first go around though. NYC must have really large conventions. What would you say the average count of people is for those? I live in Arkansas, so more of a small southern state. There is one convention just called Comic Con at the capital that usually has a big showing and one called Spa-Con in an area of the state known for natural springs. It also usually puts on a good show, but I bet both are small compared to what you've attended. I do hope to eventually make it to some bigger conventions.
Haha I definitely don’t mind if you want advice on bag making ^_^ feel free to ask, I had to look up the Luna P thing but that would make an adorable little bag if you do it
Oh god yes! Anime NYC was massive! I was not expecting something so huge cause the only other con I go to (bakuretsu con) usually has 200-400 attendees, but anime nyc the year I went I believe they said there were over 40,000 :shock: here’s the first pic I took when I got there because I was shocked how big it was, this was just the lobby

And I was super nervous doing the cosplay contest cause there were so many people watching which I’m not used to :unsure: it ended up fine though :)
I’ve only been to anime cons before is the comic con one fun? I’ve always wondered if they’re more about actual comics or if it’s more variety than that

Thank you! I appreciate that, and I'm hoping I can work on the bag closer to Christmas when I have a work break. Right now my focus has been getting the vest at least recognizable for the character. I decided to go with fabric paints over vinyl to make it a little more 90's punk accurate. Ok, I would so panic at a convention that large, but that's extremely impressive and I bet it was a load of fun!

I missed the anime cons this year because they were in the middle of July and a bit hot for me. I would love to attend an anime con though. The Comic Cons I've attended are to me just really diverse. There are still a lot of anime-related booths and cosplayers, it's just also mixed with Marvel, DC, and a ton of movie or game characters. I think it probably just has more variety of everything maybe?

You're welcome! I agree, it's really fun to do a themed iteration of a character. Those boots sound like a great addition to the look.

Jean fabric, like denim? Is it a denim jacket? I haven't used iron-on vinyl before but a friend or two use it, not sure if it's hand washable or not! I have used Jacquard fabric paints on several projects with success. NeOpaque is their line of paints that's very opaque and pigment-dense so it shows up very well on dark fabrics. You can paint bright colored designs on black fabric with it. It can be thinned enough to airbrush on (though you'll lose some of its ability to cover dark fabric this way) which is awesome if you're using sticky stencils. Then when it's dry you can lay some baking parchment down to protect the paint and then heat-set it with an iron to help it melt a bit into the fabric, and it's permanent and won't bleed.
Also, the character wears jewel cuffs and a necklace. I was thinking spiked and healed wrist cuffs and a choker.
Spiked sounds great! What does healed mean?
Should I jump into leather? I’ve done leather work before but it’s so expensive or is there a better option?
Leather can be expensive especially for the tools but it does last a super long time so if you think you'll wear the accessories more than once over the years you might enjoy having them be leather. You could see if a leather supply store has a scrap bin you can pick through for less expensive pieces, or thrift an old belt.
I love the pony outfit you made! I went and looked through all the updates and that must have taken so much patience. Honestly not to fan person too hard but I’m still kinda in awe of your work.
B'aww thank you!! It was a lot of work to make but not nearly as much work as the real thing, plus the whole process was amusing me so much, I enjoyed working on it.
The buttons on my jacket have the Torrid logo. I was thinking about roughing up the words with sand paper and painting them with black nail polish. Would that be weird?
It wouldn't be weird! I'm hesitant to recommend using nail polish, because sometimes it works great and sometimes it chips and flakes off or even turns powdery white, or sticky or gummy. It's hard to predict without doing tests and waiting a long time to see how the materials react. Maybe some enamel paint? What are the buttons made of, plastic? Metal? If they're raised letters, you probably can sand them off with determination. If they're indented, you can still try but it's harder. If they're sew-on buttons you could replace them.

@Jellybean
You're wonderful for tackling my long post. Let me try to make this one a bit shorter and less all over the place to deal with.
  • Yeah, I originally bought it as a white denim and dyed it a light pink to match the character's hair and general theme color. I've cut the jacket down to size and placed in some black/pink/red rose inserts as well. I'm attaching new pockets made from the same fabric since I kinda ruined the pockets that were previously there when I sized it down. You actually totally answered my question. I was looking at that brand of fabric paint because I used to use their dye to do wool hair and loved how pigmented it was, but I've never used their fabric paint. I would basically be buying black and applying it to the pink demin fabric.
  • Sorry healed was a typo from my not proof reading. I want to do spikes and gems on the cuffs and choker and the leather itself would also end up black. The idea of thrifting a belt though is a great idea. I'll start searching since I do already have spikes I bought for the jacket I could work that into something without going to crazy on price I think.
  • The buttons are metal with raised letters. I'll also go look at enamel paints then since that sounds like a better option. The long run I would like to replace the buttons with moons and stars, but short term for the first convention I just wanted to cover them so that not everything just screamed "Torrid" literally from the buttons. :lolpony:

That all sounds great!! Are the buttons sew-on? That makes them easy to replace. Just look up how to properly sew on a button and use a real thin, sharp needle and a thimble to help you get through the thick fabric.
I'm glad to be of help! Let us know how it comes out!

Yeah, they are just sewn into it. I'll admit I've never replaced a button before but you're right it shouldn't be too bad. It might be later in the month before I update. I'm trying to wait till I get paid before I grab more supplies like paints and such.

Nothin like working on your cosplay the day before you leave to the convention! lol

Ill have to post pics later :)

Im ready for this weekend to spend so much money and regret it later xD

You've got this! I look forward to seeing your creation. :Flutter::Flutter:

Omg how adorable! My girlfriend loves FF so I know what you are. Moogle right? How fun! Hope you’re having a good time at the con

Ooh I actually have those horns and like to dress as some Forrest spirit with them. What a cute outfit!

@Sassarazzmadazzles I have the black and red rose ram horns. Today for my birthday I dressed rainbow, had a sash given to me by friends and wore my crystal crown. Not a cosplay just a bright head piece day.

I’m excited to see what else you come up wth

@Jellybean do you have a favorite pointy ear you’ve done? How hard is it to make it blend in with skin?

Nice coordinating with the mushrooms and stripes!

I've only used my pointy ears for one costume so far, though at some point I intend to wear them for a medieval, Tolkien-style elf look .
They're these from Aradani. I haven't really bothered to blend mine in unless I have a friend to maybe dab a touch of makeup on, since I can't see what I'm doing on the side of my head, but the side locks from my wig mostly hide the join. I really like them, they're super light weight and don't annoy my ears at all. And I'm lucky enough to be a good match for one of their available skin tones already.

Sorry, I’ve been bad about responding in a timely manner lately :unsure:
Fabric paints is definitely a good choice cause it’s a lot cheaper than vinyl and you can mix colors to get exactly what you need :)
Right! It was huge! I got lost at least 4 times trying to find my way around that weekend lol, luckily I had a friend with me who isn’t as bad as I am with directions (it was also the first time I’d had someone go with me to a con which made it extra fun) and we had a great time!
Oh that’s odd that they happened in the summer, the ones around me usually are from September to November (once I went to one that happened on Halloween and everything was themed and my costume just happened to match too :) probably my favorite time attending still)
Cool, that’s what I thought comic cons would be like but I wasn’t sure cause of the name :) though the anime cons I’ve been to aren’t usually just anime either. I always see some Doctor Who, Mlp (only FIM though), Deadpool, Supernatural, Animal Crossing and various video game stuff too
