Cosplay Chat

Hello everyone,

I thought this might be a fun topic to have and discuss. I'm still new to cosplaying myself and just started before Covid and picked it back up after. Anyway, I'll go first and attach some of my stuff.

The first one is where I did a full-body painting as Sally from NBC. I also did a paint-up as the Other Mother (cannot find the picture). Unfortunately due to allergies, I can no longer use body paints.

Still, there are two big Cons in my state in Sept so a friend and I are doing punk Sailor Moon characters. I picked Wicked Lady since I love the villains in the show.

The best started out white so I dyed it pink. It was also two sizes too big so I cut out portions and put in rose fabric inserts. I plan to also do grommets on the sides so it laces.

I have more plans and will update as I go. How about everyone else? Do you cosplay? What kind of cosplay do you do? If you don't but would like to try what are some of your dream cosplays?

Hi! Thanks for making this topic! I’ve wanted to chat more to other cosplayers so this is perfect! I love your Sally! I hope you have a great time cosplaying at those local cons too! :D

I’ve been a fursuiter for *years* so I’m used to, costuming as a concept but not, having my face on display! I’ve been self conscious as someone who’s plus sized about cosplay and put it off for years. Despite really wanting to!

It was actually seeing Pipp Petals in the newest generation of My Little Pony who is portrayed as shorter and chubbier than the other ponies, and was beloved by the fandom for being smol and cute, that made me feel confident enough to cosplay! She’s a pop star, famous pony! Whom everyone thinks is so beautiful, despite being shorter and chubbier (it is only a slight difference but to me? It matters!) it helped dismiss the qualms I had in my mind, the worries and doubts of being too big to cosplay. Because, well, she is differently sized and proportioned to the other ponies, so that isn’t a concern! I know it’s silly but it was a difficult thing for me to move past and having that representation really helped me! She’s also a social media influencer and is always on her phone and taking selfies, which is me in a nutshell to be honest! Even without knowing I cosplay her folks compare me to Pipp all the time, which I’m very okay with! I’ve never felt more like a character is just me haha! So she has been my first cosplay ever and certainly first My Little Pony cosplay!

I debuted her at Griffish Isles, where I actually won an award for best adult cosplay, which was a HUGE surprise to me! (Newcomers do get favoured for it!) but it was such a moment! I’ve not stopped cosplaying her since and I’ve upgraded the cosplay a little bit at a time!

Coastie got this great photo of me with my trophy pulling such a Derpy face! Again I’m used to nobody being able to see my features when they take a photo of me! So it was a learning curve! I honestly? Hate wigs and can’t use bleach on my hair due to allergies so I tend to dye my hair with a dark purple (usually turns more reddy!) and use my natural hair, but I’m working on upgrading a wig to make it less ‘shiny’ and uncomfortable!
IMG_1090_Original.jpeg

I took the same cosplay to GalaCon in Germany as well! Excuse my partner behind me peeking over! This is more what my natural hair colour looks like! Properly brunette haha! I ‘stripped down’ this cosplay a lot to make it easier for transport and because Germany was HOT!

But I had a fab time! I did get on stage for the cosplay contest, no wins this time but that’s ok! One of the judges was also cosplaying Pipp!

At GalaCon was where I debuted my second cosplay, which is Rarity! Specifically Gen 4 Rarity! She’s always been a firm favourite of mine and it’s so far the only place I’ve cosplayed as her properly! I’ve gotten ears and a horn ready to cosplay her more in the future? However this dress is a wedding dress and I need to be laced in, so it takes forever and kinda requires not a lot of walking! Im only 5’7 so it’s easy to trip on it!

She’s such a fun cosplay though! 100% hoping to cosplay her again at some point next year! Hopefully with a wig, her horn and ears, as well as probably a few more accessories! I handmade the head piece for her myself and the shawl was handmade by HouseOfLoli on Etsy! (She was utterly amazing to work with! Recommend!)

This is more what my Pipp Petals cosplay tends to look like these days! This was also at GriffishIsles! This was a slightly less involved version as I was running a table for my artwork that convention, hence why I went for leggings over pink tights and no gloves haha! :D
IMG_3095.jpeg

And I’ll end with probably one of my fave cosplay photos by my friend Echo! Pipp Petals means so much to me as a pony! She introduced me too and gave me the confidence to cosplay! I really want to keep diversifying and cosplaying other characters ( I’m hoping to cosplay Wysteria and Minty in the future! ) but it can be pricey! Right now? I’m focusing on upgrading the cosplays I have, making them feel just right!

Pipp is a chubby queen and thats why i love her lol ♥

I wish her toys would reflect her short and chubby though lol stead of stream line body shape, but its okay

Your pipp came out adorable in every style! and rarity is elegant~

I havnt thought about cosplaying as g5 ponies yet. i never thought about pipp, shed be easy enough for me though! cause i could totally just use my normal hair, though its not purple xD thats okay - i never go into contests, so its all in fun

I have been dressing up as ponies with hats cause i have to cut a hole in my wig to put my hair up in a bun and hide in the hat, cause i dunno if you seen my Usagi pic, but my hair when its fully down, it almost reaches my ankles! lol - so its near impossible to fit it under a wig

Here is this years cosplays at PFF ♥ G3 Mistletoe and G3 Abracadabra

Oh and crocs cause I 100% forgot my "good" shoes 4 hours away back at home xD

Question:

Is it closet cosplay if almost everything I wear comes out of my closet, but I have some moderately complex accesories, and paint myself blue, and have a dark blue wig?

On one hand it feels a bit unfair to categorise as closet cosplay, cause it looks relatively proffessional, and it resembles the character pretty closely, but on the other hand it't technically almost all out of my closet, and the character is not videly known, so the resembelance might not matter that much, when everyone's doing insanely complex cosplays of popular characters with more complex designs. So should I be unfair to myself, or should I be unfair to everyone else? I might just say eff it, and email the organisers, but I really don't wanna have to bother them with :poop: like this.

Having to categorise any form of art is confusing, and I don't like doing it, but I wanna register for competition, and I have no clue what I'm doing.

At the con I usually go to the rule is you have to have made at least 50% of your cosplay in order to enter it in the cosplay contest (you can still walk the stage and show it off if you made less than 50% but it won’t be judged and can’t win a prize), so if those accessories make up 50% of it then I’d say it’s not a closet cosplay. The term I’ve heard used for a cosplay that’s half put together from things you didn’t make and half put together from things you did make is Casual Cosplay :) it’s what I did the first 2 years that I was trying it out, I didn’t enter those but I have seen Casual Cosplays win in the novice category

@Sassarazzmadazzles weirdly when I went to a big con the first time the question I got most was “is that your real hair?” haha!
My hair happened to be the exact shade of brown as the character so I fully committed to the look and cut it to her style (it’s not a complicated one or anything I guess people were just surprised I actually cut it for a cosplay).
Also that art of Po is so cute ^_^

Thank you! @Yusei made it for me ♥

i technically made half of my moogle ears lol - i just bougt the ears/headband on amazon, but i made the Pom and the thing that makes it bouncy, which was just pipe cleaners lol - but my costumes are like 85% just stuff i bought and 15% my handywork :)

I’d recommend to check with your con’s comp rules. Some cons say a certain percentage must be handmade (usually a 25% rule, but sometimes it can be higher/lower numbers) for judging, while others allow any cosplay to enter, it really just comes down to the con.
Can’t wait to see your new cosplay! <3

I feel a bit bad since I haven’t had the mental energy to keep up with the thread lately, but I still want to check in.

First off I love everyone’s addition of their cosplays and the pony cosplays are adorable! I’m really trying to persuade my girlfriend that we should take a vacation next year during PFF so I can go. If we do then I’m totally going all out pony outfit wise.

Personally I don’t care much for the ideas that things need to be made or not. I ended up buying the wicked Lady dress to add to my wardrobe for my cosplay of the character. Since I prefer to do my own punk version I have a variety of things to mix and match but my favorite is my jacket. Since I keep adding to it and have basically done all the work myself it’s by far my favorite piece I have.

Now that I have so many tutorials on working with foam and the girlfriend has hinted at buying me supplies for the holidays for my cosplay escapades I’m debating starting a Warhammer. American McGee’s Alice has been my favorite game since the early 2000’s when it released. A version of Alice with her giant Hobby Horse Warhammer from the second game would be loads of fun to make.
