G2 custom blanks?

Oh, hey! I was just browsing The Lavendar Lagoon, and I stumbled across this:

It's one of the releases where they took G1 media and stuck G2 art on it, but still. (Baby) G2s with feathered wings! In a sort of canon.

Side note, I'd only seen like one or two of these, it's wild how much they used G2 art for other gens.

Thanks to this discovery I was able to see what G2 wings actually look like and correct my OC G2 design. Thanks! I wonder what the names of these ponies are

It seems the wing style for G2 is pretty inconsistent. Wingsong was a pegasus in one of the comics, but her wings looked entirely different. I'm also fairly positive I have seen another piece of official G2 art with a feathered pegasus, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw it.

As for the baby ponies who appear on the cover, I think they're either completely made up or a weird combination of different ponies. The yellow one kinda looks like Golden Glow, with a similar coat color and symbol, but Golden Glow is a unicorn and her hair color is completely different.

Edit: split the comic into multiple parts so you can actually see it

Those are the strangest wings I’ve ever seen on a pony. I’m sure they’re supposed to be butterfly like but all I’m imagining are giant ears unless that’s the impression they’re supposed to give since music. Thanks for attaching the comic! :flutter2:

The choice for the Dollymix wings for the G2’s and the baby ponies on the DVDs are definitely the best wings for G2 for me!

This is fascinating. Do we know if Wingsong is ever officially referred to as a pegasus? Maybe she is more like a winger. I love how it seems like G2 seemed like Hasbro's neglected stepchild at this stage. They just let people do whatever.

I do love the feathery wings on that art, but at the same time I love the wings on the planned mockup just as much!

Those wings, or something similar, were used again for Moon Shadow in another issue of the comic. In that adventure, fairies gave Moon Shadow her wings, and I think they were gone by the end of the story, or else it is implied that they would only be around temporarily.

I think that it was an implication that "wings are wings," and the art doesn't have to be faithful as to type, or what they look like that day, or even which pony has them...since they were clip-on the ponies could share them. That story with Wingsong did come out the year before Princess Twinklestar (who was not a Euro exclusive, btw! Neither was Princess Crystal or, I think, Princess Trixiebell. I swear I saw them in the store!) was released, but with Twinklestar's release kids could play out that story using Wingsong, or any pony they wanted!

I love the G3 dollymix wings on the G2s, but then I am a huge fan of crossing the gens.

So I was working on a G2 base custom and something happened: the eye crystal looked like it was still in, but it had actually come out.

It looks like I was wrong about eye crystals "turning white" when the G2 is dropped in boiling water for a dye job. Rather, they have a chance of sliding out, in which case they leave a reflective silver backing, creating the illusion of a white gem.

I wonder if I should make a custom with two different colored gems since I now have the opportunity....

I am VERY excited for this project, I love G2 ponies and wish we'd gotten more~!
I have only designed G1-styled sets before, but this is making me seriously consider some of the ideas I had shelved for that (ideas/gimmicks that wouldn't have been around in the 80s mostly) <3

Hey everyone, just an update! I’ve not disappeared, it has been a couple of extremely busy months at work and I’ve had a HUGE cosplay project for Halloween which the deadline is rapidly approaching and stressing me out. Things have still been moving in the background with all sorts of material tests and a proper dossier for the project to get better factory quotes as well as other stuff.

i was able to say hi to Little Starglow Ponies at UK Ponycon - they’re the UK distributor for HQGLCs and they let me have a feel of all their models as well as some tips on dyeing and colouring and design. They’ve also SUPER made me want to get into custom G1s omg the little babies are too cute.

Anyway, not dead, just tired lol

Share the dying tips!

I wish G2 was more popular.
Definitely! It's so cute, but it's like a more elegant cute. I know a lot of collectors who grew up with G1 really didn't pay as much mind to the show as they did the figures themselves, but I still think a show might have helped.

I wonder what a G2 show would have been like?

I bet they would've looked the way they do in the animated PC game. If you haven't seen it, it's on Youtube. Thing that gets me though-some ponies eat hay and jump fences, others cook in a kitchen and are into fashion. Probably would've been the more human type.

Eh, what hay? It was apples and garden-grown lolipops, cupcakes, and pizza slices. It was kind of hilarious.
Nah I'm well aware of Friendship Gardens. It was my intro to MLP and holds a very special place in my heart. I less meant the art style though and more meant the story. The back cards are all stories of magic and wizards, of love and other random bits of daily life. It's hard to say what kind of direction they would have taken it for a show.

This definitely leads in an off-topic direction though. If you want to continue this chat I'd be down for a DM convo.

Wow! you started MLP right around when I was rejecting it (save thrift store finds). I love G2s now, but at the time they were too Sweetheart Sister, and the problem with them for me was always a lack of unis. I found some resin horns on Etsy that fit G1, G2, AND G3. They are about G3 sized, but G2s have surprisingly large foreheads when you hold the horn to them. As soon as the G2 customs are available, I will have G2 unis that have horns of varying sizes. And to not get off topic, lol, I love the pegasus wings being planned.

......That's really making me want to make a G2 pony with a unicorn horn in the proportion I normally prefer to draw. That seems like it would look so cool! I don't already have the materials or the know-how though so it'll probably be a while before I can do that.

Ahh, yes their resemblance to the sweetheart sisters is strong. ^^ I love Sweetheart Sisters too though!

Hmm, no kidding about the horn sizes. I've got Princess Silver Swirl so I just compared them, PSS's horn mostly seems a bit thinner than my G3 Lily Lightly. Otherwise they seem similar in size. I always thought it looked a little bit strange.
