G3 G3 Disintegrating Hair Syndrome

I know this might not sound funny, but their hair is like what mine is doing right now! :( I am getting off a med that has a side effect of hair lose. I am 39 and my hair is so very thin now! :(
Hugs

This is so upsetting  I was a kid during G3, so majority of my collection are G3 ponies. I'm gonna have to check them out and make sure everyone is okay. :surprisepony:

These gals are so prone to this as well. Especially the pink.

I can confirm Strawberry Sunset has this hair. :( She had to be re haired.

OMG! I have that yellow fakie. It was a favorite of mine as a kid. I cut it's hair and it played the role of the stallion. I think I named him Banana Boat.

She seemed to be fine, but then again, if it was going to happen, it was going to happen no matter what, this just maybe sped it up :)

It sure is. I think getting wet just sped up the process.
im so afraid to take mine out of the bag lol, i have them still in package, i dont wanna chance her hair

I would 100% recommend keeping any ponies on the list on the first page in their original packaging when possible. Chances are pretty high (though not impossible!) that the hair will eventually deteriorate and crumble into dust, sadly, but they'll be preserved best in that state for however long it lasts.

This may sound a bit pessimistic, but what we've seen firsthand is that the hair of affected ponies has been shown to break off, and has been shown to eventually literally become dust. Even if they're in their boxes or bags, an affected pony being tossed around enough (think: in the mail, in moving boxes, etc) would likely be enough agitation to cause the hair to crumble.

There are absolutely ponies on the list who CAN be found without their hair affected in this way, which adds to the growing theory that environmental conditions can cause or at least heavily contribute to the ones who are losing their hair.

Might want to put an asterisk on G2 Cupcake. I legit can’t tell if mine is breaking breaking (those shorter strands not withstanding) or the clamp on the tail is messed up. The strands aren’t shredding like they do on my disintegrating ones when I pull, but they were definitely coming out on some capacity.

Full disclosure, I’m slowly moving my collection out of my parents place. My dad chain smokes and his bedroom was always next to mine. And since I left the house he’s insistent on leaving the door open to my room. Everyone who comes out of there needs a washing, from ponies to plushies. While I didn’t keep them in direct sunlight, there were some that caught the sunbeams as it set across my room. I have no clue how it affects anything I’m noticing.

Also, don’t smoke, kids. My grandparents had the same issue and I have pieces of their furniture I never feel I can truly get clean, unless I hit the numbers and can pay for them to be professionally restored.

Hi! I’m a member in the G3 FB group and posted about my Dream Drifter having the same thing a while ago, I didn’t know it was so widespread :sadpony:
I bought a large lot some weeks ago and when I went to clean her up, the orange stripe in her hair completely fell out of the rooting.
I also have a Petal Blossom from the same lot but I’m a little scared to touch her >_<

Here’s a pic after barely touching her braid; surprisingly, the pink seems nice, so it’s just the orange stripe (for now at least!)
I’m still looking for a color match as I’d like to keep her as close to original as possible, so if anyone has suggestions please don’t hesitate to let me know!

I can unfortunately provide confirmation photos for Jazz Matazz and Wave Catcher. Jazz seems to only be suffering from rotting pink and Wave Catcher from rotting orange, but only time will tell.

Jazz has not been washed or combed, Wave Catcher has been cleaned with dawn, warm water, fabric softener, and a gentle combing and her orange kept coming right on out.

Spring Fever is another very likely contender. I don't have concrete proof, but when I cleaned one I found her hair was breaking off just like we see in confirmed polypropylene ponies. She also has had a couple releases where she was included with another pony, which is further supporting evidence that Hasbro would've used the cheaper hair.

EDIT: I will also be able to provide confirmation photos for Tea Lily and prrrobably Peach Surprise eventually. They arrived while I’m out of town but I had my mom open the package. Tea Lily is confirmed balding, Peach Surprise she says is really dry but not breaking just yet. It’ll probably fall out as I comb her, though.

Add Baby Soakey Doakey to the list ;( her middle pink hair is falling off, though it’s all polypropylene so I imagine it’ll all fall off at someopint :break:

Hi all! I just found this forum and this post in particular because I am cleaning my old pony collection (mom smoked inside growing up so they all need a deep clean) and was wondering what happened to my pony, so I'm glad to have found an answer!! It's Blossomforth from the Wing Wishes line. Spring Fever, who came with her, seems fine, but Spring Fever was still in her original box. I'll look out for any more that this happens to as I work through cleaning the rest of my collection and post them here if I find any more. I have about 1.5 more boxes to go. The second I put Blossomforth in the water, all of her hair came out.

My poor girl only lost the pink hair after being frozen in ice...

Thank you all for your information and for submitting your photos. The first page has now been updated. <3

Thank you for all of the helpful information! It's so sad that one of the birthflower ponies is affected, too. I think I'm just going to rehair my Green Apple with apple green hair....
Sounds like a lovely idea

I got this Rainbow Dash in a lot today and while combing her, a lot of short pieces of her pink hair came out. I just combed her a little bit more on this white paper to show a small example (may be hard to see because I didn't want to take out too much more, sorry). Is this the beginnings of disintegrating hair syndrome or she just needs conditioner?? :(

I already have this Rainbow Dash but in poorer condition and I don't know where she is. I love G3 and have quite a few G3 ponies but this is the first time I have encountered this. Even though I have Petal Blossom, Baby Romperooni, and Rainbow Flash.

Additionally I have a G1 Summerwing pony of Buzzer (the Hong Kong version) whose hair is dry and falling apart into short bits like this, only more extreme. I don't know how she was stored before I received her though so I don't know if it's just from sun or something...

This is heartbreaking! I didn’t even know this existed. I’ve been looking to get a rainbow flash and petal blossom for a while. Are the single ones of them okay? Or it’s just the one with the baby pony?

I think you might really be able to tell for sure if you were to wet her hair with anything, as that seems to rapidly cause the deterioration to happen. I brushed out a Petal Blossom a week ago to prep for sale, and she was totally fine being brushed. But as soon as I went to wash her hair, it started coming out in clumps. :(

Conditioner will not fix hair that falls out for any reason, I'm afraid:

"Sadly, there is no cure for Disintegrating Hair Syndrome. Once the hair has started to fall apart, it's too late. :(

At that point, re-hairing is your only option.

Some may choose to leave their DHS-prone ponies without brushing and to display them however they look. Be aware though that
as soon as you move a pony that has DHS, or pack or ship it, or if it falls over, or if a breeze from an open window blows too hard,
the pony is still going to lose its hair eventually."

This is heartbreaking! I didn’t even know this existed. I’ve been looking to get a rainbow flash and petal blossom for a while. Are the single ones of them okay? Or it’s just the one with the baby pony?

The prevailing theory supports that, but to my knowledge it is not entirely proven (yet)

A reminder, as I haven't gotten any volunteers so far <3
If anyone would like to share their color-matching recommendations for replacement hair for any of these affected ponies, please feel free and I will add it to the main post. <3

Crap. Is the entire generation doomed to partial baldness?
