G3 G3 Disintegrating Hair Syndrome

I love my G3s, but this is getting ridiculous.
:(

Crap. Is the entire generation doomed to partial baldness?

This is what I’m worried about too!

No, there is no evidence at this time to support that theory.

The experiences of people with ponies with disintegrating hair are still vastly in the minority of the overall number of G3 ponies in existence. Of those ponies, only 2 hair colors appear to be affected (dark pink, dark orange).

There is no need to panic. :)

There is the yellow in Autumn Crisp's hair as well. I hope that it's contained to a very small number of ponies too.

I saw gem blossom was mentioned above, is it a particular one? I’m guessing the friendship ball one?

Not every G3 has disintegrating hair syndrome and not every single pony of the same molds/release has it either. It’s just the luck/unlucky part of the G3 production.

Treat it the same way as G1 pony cancer/age spots some molds and releases are more prone then others and not every single pony in that line has it either. ;)

nope! Mostly just the ones that have polypropylene hair instead of nylon. Most poly-haired ponies that I know of are the discount store ponies and Avon ponies. There are other ponies with polypropylene hair besides just those though. For example, I know that the 2009 comic con pony has it too.

If anyone would like to share their color-matching recommendations for replacement hair for any of these affected ponies, please feel free and I will add it to the main post. <3
Sorry for the super late reply- just caught this! I’m unsure, but if it helps, Dollyhair’s Heartthrob *might* be a really close match for the hot pink shade that’s prone to disintegrating. I have a little left-over so I’ll have to compare my Petal Blossom and confirm asap while she still has intact hair.
I also have some Nectarine? (have to double check the shade) hair left over, I’ll compare that too but it’s an unlikely match for the orange stripe for Dream Drifter; I think closer matches would be Tigerlily or Marmalade since the “orange” appears to be a little more on the yellow side than a true orange.
As for the rest of them, I’m 95% sure the light pink stripe in Secret Wish’s hair is a variation of “fading pink”, and I’m (unfortunately) unsure on the other shades :( Hope this somewhat helps!

UPDATE: Dollyhair’s Heartthrob is a perfect match! Will come back to update on the orange match, but I still think Tigerlily/Marmalade are better matches to Dream Drifter’s orange than Nectarine ^^
If anyone has any other match suggestions for other ponies (that I may have), let me know! I’ll be ordering some samples soon-ish so I’d like to know what colors to look out for :)

This is heartbreaking! I didn’t even know this existed. I’ve been looking to get a rainbow flash and petal blossom for a while. Are the single ones of them okay? Or it’s just the one with the baby pony?
The single versions of Petal Blossom and Rainbow Flash (the versions that didn't have a bonus baby) have nylon hair. The bonus-baby versions have poly hair, probably to offset the cost of the baby.

Back when G3s were in stores I bought a bonus-baby Petal Blossom to customize and was sooo confused when I was unable to dye her hair, lol. Poly hair doesn't get wet or take dye easily.

Seems like SDCC Tattoo Pony can also suffer from this :( I noticed that her hair is breaking down in small pieces when I was washing her for a first time, so I brushed her mane very carefully and braided it. Her tail seems to be ok for now. Here are some photos, you can see some short hair in her mane:

And after taking these photos I noticed small pieces of hair on the paper. Luckily it's just two of them, but still:

I would guess is it's the value pack one.

Pic from Strawberry Reef. According to Strawberry Reef, the value pack version has a darker hoof design than the Friendship Ball one.

Now that's a kick in the face. You'd think they'd go above and beyond for event exclusives.

Thanks for sharing :) Did you get her hair wet at all while washing? The short strands look to be of both hair colors, but the damage also is so minor that I'm not sure if this one qualifies... but we'll keep it on the radar. ;)

Yes, I washed her hair, too, but very carefully. Unfortunately I have no more "before" photos since I bought and washed her a really long time ago, but I remember I braided her because I noticed small hair parts falling off. I was afraid her hair will start to came off in larger stripes like it was with Jazz Matazz, so I tried to prevent it by braiding. Maybe this is how disintegration begins, but I really hope it won't get worse.

I'm glad this thread exists, or else I would have had no idea what had happened to my poor Jazz Matazz.

I've noticed that Wave Catcher seems to be okay for now, but it got me thinking:

If selling ponies on this list whose hair is currently okay, what would be the best approach? Should I mention that they're on this list? I'd hate to sell a fully haired pony to someone and they open their packaging to a partially bald pony with pieces of hair scattered in the package!

Probably a good idea. That way it let's non pony people know what they can expect, and takes the heat off a seller if it all goes wrong. I would imagine it's not any different then mentioning it for other toys with notorious design flaws that a community knows about, but others may not.

Not sure if it’s appropriate to post, but keep an eye on later line G4s!
Me and a friend confirmed our water cuties (we both have Diamond Mint) have poly hair, and I recently saw one for sale with only the washer left :/
if it’s okay to attach the pictures from the listing, I’ll update later, but man it sucks since it’s difficult to rehair WCs without breaking them apart

Although I would think that if you're able to brush the pony's hair without issue that it should ship safely as well, it never hurts to give a buyer a heads' up about potential problems. Since you can't include URL's in most sales venue messaging systems (Ebay, Mercari), you can just suggest they look up "Disintegrating Hair Syndrome MLPTP" (with or without quotes) and Google should lead them straight to this thread for all the information the community currently has.

You're welcome to share photos from the listing--the more information we can accumulate here, the more helpful it will be to the rest of the community. :)
