Let's hear some hot takes!

I always played the ponies in Gingerbread's pose as boys. I only had Party Time & Sky Rocket in that pose and idk why but they always seemed more masculine to me
I totally thought Party Time was a big brother when I first saw a pick of her, I think that particular pose just feels a bit bulkier or something
And Hasbro apparently agreed with this sentiment at some point! Glad to see I’m not alone in thinking the same, I believe its the face/head of this pose that resembles the Big Brothers a little, at least to me.

  • Sportstime is a stallion, the first in the My Little Pony line to be cast in the usually female Gingerbread Pose. A similar situation happened with his Playschool Babies counterpart Baby Schoolbag, who was the first colt to use a filly pose. But where Baby Schoolbag was sometimes given the Clydesdale/Shire hooved look of male ponies in the UK comics, Sportstime was always drawn with "plain" hooves.

The Party Time and Magic Star poses both have that bulkier look. The Cuddles pose (not the BBE one) also looks very boyish to me. When I was five or six I got the frilly pink and white Baby Buggy with Cuddles and declared that Cuddles was my first baby boy pony. When my older sister pointed out that the little backcard story said "she" and "her", I said "Those are typos."

As a kid I thought Sunlight, Firefly, Trickles, and a bunch of other ponies were male, and also thought Parasol, Medley, and Posey were girls . . . If a pony had masculine energy, he was a boy, lol. (I hadn't seen Rescue at Midnight Castle, I probably wouldn't have put Firefly in the boy camp if I'd seen the special.)

Thank you, yes.

I hate Cozy Glow and all Shirley Temple expies where the twist is they're cRaZy and eViL. Yes, this includes that Looney Tunes character and the Cats Don't Dance girl. Shirley Temple was a REAL PERSON and by all accounts she was pleasant and easy to work with as a child actor. It's so mean-spirited and weird to repeatedly make these evil strawman characters of her.

It is actively to the detriment of the story that Cozy Glow is a baby pony instead of an adult. It makes the viewer ask: "Hey, where are her parents? Are they evil and encouraging her to do all this? Are they nice but they can't connect with her? Are they going through a horse divorce and it negatively affected Cozy Glow so she's acting out? Are they dead? What is this baby pony's motivation for wanting power so badly?" And none of it is ever addressed because the writers never had a single thought when wrote her other than "hee hee Shirley Temple pony do bad". They really lost the thread in the later seasons of FIM.

Okay Im a little late and I know some of these hot takes were mentioned before in this thread but um. Here are my super strong hot take opinions

Beddy Bye Eyes are THE CUTEST PONIES IN THE UNIVERSE. Sure they have rust issues but once you clean them up? I don’t care what anyone else says they are cute.

I hate hate hate deflocking. (But of course people can do whatever they want with their ponies. I would just be very sad if I ever found a pony wither her flocking removed)

I love tinsel and hate hate hate detinseling. (But again: people can do whatever they want with their ponies. I just would Immediately rehair and retinsel whatever pony it is if I got one and it was missing her tinsel lol). I don’t find it hard to work with in the slightest, and I’ve gotten ponies with messy horrible hair and tinsel.

I personally do not understand it when collectors get so upset about minor “flaws”. If the pony has frizzy hair, if they have a few age spots but none of them are that bad, if their head is a slightly different shade than the body: I don’t think “minor flaws” really matter. I love restoring ponies but I only really bother if the flaws are big (cut hair, TONS of marker, rust, ect).

I love unboxing ponies. Including old vintage ones lol I don’t even care. I bought it, it’s a toy for me so I will do whatever I want and open her so I can play with it >:3

This isn’t a hot take with all you collector folk but apparently it’s a hot take in the greater internet culture to say “Gen 1 is my fave and I don’t care as much about g4 and g5”. Not that I dislike those generations (I grew up with g4 so I do like it a lot  ) just that my main interest isn’t focused on it.

And finally: I wish people would stop getting mad at people for customizing vintage ponies. It really isn’t a big deal to customize a vintage toy, I think you’re just giving it new life. Most people don’t care if it’s a common or damaged pony: But I think people should be able to customize whatever ponies they want, including super rare ones, because at the end of the day it’s THEIR toy that they own and they should be able to do whatever they want with it.

Yeah, I liked Cozy Glow because she was so cute and for how she was Before she was revealed to be evil... I remember after her debut episode, my younger sibling guessed she was evil but I thought that was absolutely silly and false. Then the show started cluing in she was outright evil and I kept being in denial until there was no ignoring it anymore. It was so messed up that she was a little baby foal that got turned into stone (a fate worse than death in my opinion) without any kind of digging into her life or backstory.

That being said, my take is I don't think My Little Pony media should have big bad irredeemable villains anymore. I know G1 did, but I think MLP works best when it is just cute pony slice of life with some emotion and character-driven moments, and any antagonists there might be are capable of redemption. This may come from my current favorite pony media being Twinkle Wish Adventure, Maretime Bay Adventure, Pony Life, and My Little Pony tales. When G4 did big bad villains, a lot of the time it felt too edgy for me. Then Make Your Mark spent a lot of its time on this Opaline plot I do not care about, and then she got sealed into a tree, and evil or not it hurts me to see MY LITTLE PONIES have to suffer such a fate. And I think sticking in the villain plot stuff ruined what little appeal Tell Your Tale used to have.

G5 had a decent villain arc set up and now it’s been rushed and falling flat.

I mean when your stuck with two angry Princess Liea hair buns and then two dangling croissants for layers you would probably be bitter too!

The one thing about her design that didn’t sit right with me was her sorta sideburns(?). I couldn’t figure out how her hairline worked on an equine being that isn’t supposed to be human.

I actually like the G5 designs though, I just have to forget their hairlines
