Minty spotted on Taobao!

And who has the copyright to the other characters now? What are they *doing* with them? Nothing? :(

I don't see why hasbro can't buy the rights back. I've seen some background ponies in FiM that looked like G1s. Specifically Meldey

Yay :cheshire::cheshire::cheshire:

Here is your information about the G1 reboots... the show would have been so different if they still had the copyrights... here are the original sketches for the show by Lauren Faust along with some info.
Apparently all the characters on the show were originally meant to be redesigned G1's, but had to first pass through G3 because of copyright. :(

I did not create this.

(Sorry for stretching the page out!)

I think they just told her that to stave her off because they (Hasbro) wanted to use other ponies. They clearly DO have the rights to the name Firefly, as they are using it for a G.I. Joe figure right now. (Hasbro also owns G.I. Joe.)

Also, Apple Bloom's friend Twist has a G1 name and Hasbro recently licensed some shirts with G1 characters on them, soooo . . .

That was before losing the copyright I think.

I say Hasbro just wanted to make a bunch of copy-pastes and ignore collector demands. -_-

But whatever MINTY!

I think "losing the copyright to the name" goes farther than just the name. If I'm correct, it's the combination of the name, with the pony colors, with the symbol.. or something like that. So Firefly's copyright is Firefly+pink pony+blue hair+lightning bolts... So, if they make a Twist, that doesnt look EXACTLY like G1 Twist, they can get away with it.

But why would they be able to use Applejack, then?

I think Hasbro wanted to keep using Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie--having spent ten years putting them on a LOT of merchandise and making them well-known to little girls--and babbled a lot of BS legalese at Lauren Faust and the animators so they would think Hasbro couldn't use Firefly and Surprise (Pinkie was originally a replacement for Surprise).

I mean, Hasbro has just recently licensed T-shirts with G1 Sundance and Princess Sparkle on them. They must retain the rights to the pony's images to do that.

It's never made ANY sense that they've lost the rights to ALL the names (I'm sorry but how can you copyright the name 'blossom' anyway?) EXCEPT Apple Jack and Spike? I mean, really. And the retro sets only go to prove that it's entirely inconsistent, really, not to mention the fact constant merchandise is released with "sundance" and her picture on, or Glory, or whomever. It's just a lazy company being lazy, imho.

YES. This!

This copyright issue really confuses me.

Honestly, I'm partly glad Hasbro aren't using some of the old characters so they won't muck them up, put of course there's a side of me who is so sad that with all the new G4 characters, there can't be more G1s in the mix.

At least Hasbro's answer on the issue wasn't "stay tuned"?

Haha, yes!

But back to Minty. Hmm, she looks really funny with the white hair. Anyone else like that about her, or does it bother you?

I am just excited to see the blind bag G4 ponies becoming "real" ponies, hehe.
